Margets Bags on Home Soil After Winamax SISMIX Day 1a

Nível 20 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Leo Margets Advanced to Day 2
Leo Margets Advanced to Day 2

After an incredible Day 1a of the Winamax SISMIX Main Event where 402 players entered, just 79 players advanced to Day 2 after 20 levels of play.

The tournament was so popular that although players were originally allowed one re-entry per flight, that was revised to allow for re-entry into the Turbo Day 1d flight on Friday only.

Several notable players jumped into the Main Event, including Winamax Team Pros Pierre Calamusa, Adrien Delmas and Leo Margets, along with former champion Jerome Sgorrano, Erwann Pecheux and French rugby player Hugues Briatte.

Of those players, just Margets would advance to Day 2. After announcing the ceremonial shuffle up and deal at the start of play, she registered at the first break and slowly built up her stack over the course of the day to bag 233,000. She previously finished 16th at the 2017 Winamax SISMIX and will be looking for another strong performance at a venue where she won €100,000 in 2010 as part of the Full Tilt Masters Series.

Day 1a Chip Leader Yves Sanchez
Day 1a Chip Leader Yves Sanchez

The chip lead is currently held by Yves Sanchez who turned his 50,000 starting stack into 702,000. There is a gap from him back to Ronan Houssein (558,000), Arthur Degois (533,000), Tim Hartmann (530,000), Louis Marette and Alexandre Regnier (both 507,000).

With several well-known players and Team Pros occupied today with the High Roller, which is still ongoing, tomorrow looks to be another exciting and jam-packed day of poker here at the Gran Casino Costa Brava, with Day 1b getting underway at midday.

Houssein Closing in on 600,000

A full board of {j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} was out between WIP Ronan 'carbonr10' Houssein and an opponent. Houssein, a former professional Call of Duty player and Twitch streamer, overbet the pot and bet 100,000.

His opponent took his time before throwing in a single chip to call. Houssein turned over {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for a flopped set and his opponent mucked. This saw him chip up to well over 550,000 in chips.

Calamusa Eliminated Before Dinner

Nível 16 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Pierre Calamusa
Pierre Calamusa

Pierre Calamusa's seat was empty, which meant something drastic had happened as he had previously sat on a healthy stack in excess of 50 big blinds.

His table explained that he opened from under the gun and the big blind called. The flop came {q-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{5-} and the big blind bet. Calamusa raised to 20,000 and the big blind called.

The big blind bet 30,000 on the {7-} turn and Calamusa moved all in for 140,000. The big blind called.

Pierre Calamusa: {10-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Big Blind: {k-}{7-}

The big blind had turned two pair against the straight and royal flush draws of Calamusa. The river was a {10-} and Calamusa was eliminated, covered by just three big blinds.

Translation: Bust the #sismix. I had a terrific Royal Flush Draw that ended in a less formidable jack-high.

Former Champion Sgorrano Eliminated

Nível 15 : 1,200/2,500, 2,500 ante
Jerome Sgorrano
Jerome Sgorrano

2015 Winamax SISMIX champion Jerome Sgorrano defended his big blind from an under the gun open and check-called 11,000 from his opponent on a {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop.

The turn was the {5-Clubs} and Sgorrano check-called 11,500. The river was the {3-Hearts}. Sgorrano checked for a third time and his opponent moved all in, covering the Belgian.

Sgorrano had around 19,000 behind so would be left with less than eight big blinds if he folded. Eventually, he called. His opponent showed {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a rivered flush and Sgorrano's {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} headed into the muck and he was eliminated.

Roman Lewis Talks GPI Rankings, Online Series Success and Team Pro Seminars

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Romain Lewis
Romain Lewis

After finishing 2018 with a top-ten finish in the WSOP Player of the Year leaderboard, where he finished in the top three in three different bracelet events across Vegas and Rozvadov, we caught up with the Winamax Team Pro Romain Lewis to see how he has started 2019.

"Rozvadov seems like a world ago to be honest," Lewis said. "I've been playing quite a lot of live tournaments."

From the Caribbean to Australia, Lewis has kept up his passion for poker meaning he now sits as the #4 ranked Frenchman in the GPI Rankings.

"I had real objectives with the GPI for last year, because I started really well. So I just wanted to play the maximum amount of tournaments that I could. And that live focus has continued into 2019 with the Aussie Millions, which was just by far the best experience of my life. Every day we'd wake up, have an amazing coffee, play in an amazing tournament, bust but then still have the greatest day. Because how can you not?

Romain Lewis

"It's been disappointing poker-wise; I've had a lot of bad results but that's how it goes and I'm definitely going to keep playing, studying and working, but I've still got a lot of objectives for the year and a lot of live tournaments to play."

With the year barely halfway through, Lewis has recently turned his attention to the online felt with Winamax's online series, during which he played every single tournament on the schedule.

"Yeah, all 173 tournaments. I've never done that before," he said. "It was an objective of mine to get back online and to play a lot. I won two tournaments and I think I came third in the Series leaderboard."

Lewis is correct, ending up in third ahead of fellow Winamax Team Pro Davidi Kitai who finished sixth, and Lewis now has extra currency and bragging rights among his fellow Team Pros.

Romain Lewis

"I won two events, so I was happy with that. I've won one before, so now I can start to talk to the other Winamax Team Pros and be like 'Oh yeah, I've got three now.'"

This is Lewis' third year as a Winamax Team Pro, and recently took part in his third seminar where all the Team Pros gather together to discuss everything to do with poker.

"We get together four three days in the south of France, and it's period where the whole team spends most of the day getting to know each other, but three or four hours of the day there are organized chats about strategy, mental game and high-performance excellence.

"This year we had Stéphane Diagana who is a former French hurdle World Champion come speak to us, and he had a whole presentation about how he kept his motivation and belief up in his career. And when we compare our sport to another sport we can see some parallels and we learn so much from these opportunities."

Each year, the Winamax Team Pros appear to get a real kick out of the seminar; last year Adrian Mateos took down the SISMIX in Marrakech and this year Sylvain Loosli won a €10,000 High Roller in Monte Carlo.

"With so many different people, we all get a lot out of it," says Lewis. "Say Joao [Vieira] is presenting a tournament, and there's a disagreement on a certain hand. There are going to be some people who are going to be experts in that situation. And we're always going to try and get the best out of those different situations. It definitely boosts us because we're always talking about performance and how to get better.

"And to have these examples from people who've done it for years, we have so many examples from so many different people in the team."

After Monte Carlo, the Winamax Team Pros are back together here in northern Spain for the SISMIX, and Lewis says it's great to have some more time spent with the team.

"This is a really fun week. It might be low buy-ins for all of the Team Pros but we're also here to be together, and if we bust and go to the pool we'll find at least four of five pros and friends there. It's half seminar and half a poker stop for us!"

"Friends are Asking Me What I Did To Be Here!" Jok'Air Enjoying Winamax SISMIX

Nível 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Jok'Air in the Winamax SISMIX Main Event
Jok'Air in the Winamax SISMIX Main Event

Even in the middle of 335 players here on Day 1a, you can't help but notice that Jok'Air is out of this world, and his good mood is clear to all around him. The rapper, who exploded onto the scene with the release of his album Jok'Travolta has discovered a new passion here in Lloret de Mar.

However, he hasn't won the tournament yet; he did not even know the rules until a few days ago, asking for help on Twitter!

Translation: Who can teach me to play poker?

With a little help from his friend and YouTuber Zack Nani, things are already much better.

"I'm going to be the poker boss, like Kool Shen [aka Winamax Team Pro Bruno Lopes]. I've already played two tournaments and I want to play a lot more. It's a crazy game - I love it!

"You have two cards, and you try to find out what the others have. It's just great, but I think I still have a long way to go!"

To ensure he makes the most of his opportunity, Jok has been given a little help...a ranking of the best possible hands that means he doesn't even have to look at his cards to play.

"It's helpful. I took a picture, but it doesn't work every time. A guy called yesterday with ace-three when I had two jacks, and I still lost. So I went all in on the first hand of the tournament to show them who the boss is."

Well, it looks like he's got a long way to go in terms of strategy!

Jok has come to the Winamax SISMIX with his friend Chich who performs with him on stage, and it has meant he's discovered the world of poker, live tournaments and the atmosphere of SISMIX all at once.

"I want to do all the festivals. The atmosphere is crazy, everyone is having fun. It's really simple. Every time I post a photo on the internet, I have friends who are calling me to ask me what I did to be here, so I don't want to miss another one. And I think you go to Dublin in September, right?"

I think we'll be seeing him again soon.

Kanit Passes the Time on the High Roller Bubble

Nível 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Mustapha Kanit

"This guy," said Mustapha Kanit, pointing at Aladin Reskallah, "Is a Top Shark."

"This guy," he continued, pointing at Davidi Kitai, "Has been a crusher for 15 years.

"I'm special," he said modestly, before pointing out Romain Lewis. "But this guy wins a reality TV show?"

The Italian Winamax Team Pro was referring to Lewis' victory in the sixth season of La Maison Du Bluff, and was passing the time on the direct bubble of the Winamax SISMIX High Roller.

"He's [Lewis] the best guy on the team, apart from maybe ten or eleven people(!)" said Kanit with a grin.

"That's the thing with Musta," said Lewis. "When he's not got a stack he's all quiet and sulking. Now he's got a big stack he's all mouth."

A short while later, Aladin Reskallah was involved in a three-way pot, with one player all-in preflop. After waiting for the other hands, Reskallah turned over two pair which was enough to send the player to the rail, bursting the bubble and guaranteeing the remaining 33 players €1,520.

Earlier Margets was part of the 'Shuffle Up and Deal' announcement getting play underway in her home country, and she is now the first of many Team Pros that will be jumping in the Main Event.

Winamax SISMIX Costa Brava Gets Underway Today!

Winamax SISMIX Costa Brava
Winamax SISMIX Costa Brava

Welcome to Day 1a the Winamax SISMIX in what is already an exciting week of poker, mixing the sunny beaches of the Costa Brava with the poker and joie de vivre that has become synonymous with Winamax and their festivals.

A new location has done nothing thus far to convince organizers that this festival is going to be as great a success as the one twelve months ago when Winamax Team Pro Adrian Mateos took down the SISMIX title in Marrakech. He defeated a field of 1,252 to take home 1,000,000 MAD (~€89,000).

Now on home soil, it remains to be seen whether Mateos could yet go back-to-back!

Today is the first of four starting flights, with entry €500 and players receiving 50,000 chips. There will be 16 levels of late registration, with Day 1 concluding at the end of Level 20. Players are allowed one re-entry per flight.
