"Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win" —Gary Lineker

It is perhaps fitting that the largest six-max tournament of all time was won by a German. A nation of poker players famous for their aggression, tenacity and outstanding technical ability.

Tim Hartmann's name will be forever etched in poker history after winning the 2019 Winamax SISMIX Main Event, defeating Yves Sanchez heads-up to win €100,782 after a three-way deal.

From Chip Leader to Champion

"I'm feeling great," said Hartmann who, despite coming into Day 3 as chip leader, admitted that the final day was a stressful one. "We were down to the final table super fast, and I didn't play any big pots until this point so I came into the final table with 20 million chips.

"But the final table was pretty rough. I didn't hit any boards. My bluffs went wrong. It was a rollercoaster."

While Hartmann came into the final day as chip leader, there were still plenty of short stacks including Winamax Team Pro and former SISMIX champion Bruno Lopes and Leandry Ainonkpo.

Ainonkpo would double once through Morgan Aceto and then again through Lopes, leaving Kool Shen with a couple of big blinds left. He was then eliminated in 16th place for €6,500 after his king-ten was cracked by the jack-ten of Aceto.

Great Start for Aceto

It's no exaggeration that Aceto was crushing the early stages, eliminating not only Lopes but Jimmy Bord as well to overtake Hartmann in the chip counts, flipping the standings from the start of the day once the tournament reached two tables.

There were fireworks almost immediately, as Hartmann missed out on a double elimination after a sensational chop, but the German soon sent Gregory Luttke-Grech to boost his chips.

But back came Aceto, who had briefly relinquished his grasp on his table's chip lead to Yves Sanchez. Aceto eliminated Raphael Assidon and Milos Babovic in a blistering seven minutes to regain the chip lead by the final table.

The Final Table

Aceto started strongly, but a double from Dutchman Jeffrey van den Heuvel through him, coupled with Sanchez eliminating Alexandre Fradin saw the chip lead slip from his grasp.

It seemed to refocus Aceto, quickly taking chips from both Hayg Badem and Hartmann to regain control. Hartmann meanwhile was slipping and needed help on a flop for his ace-queen to crack the pocket nines of Van den Heuvel.

Hartmann would finish off Van den Heuvel shortly thereafter, but the German still remain rooted to the bottom of the leaderboard.

While the German toiled, Aceto was taking off and soon had more than half the chips in play five-handed. Hartmann soon found himself all in again, with his jacks holding this time against the ace-queen of the charismatic Ainonkpo, who had done well to stay in contention. The 22-year-old was an online qualifier, turning €50 into over €30,000 when he was eliminated just after play resumed after the dinner break.

The final table had been an entertaining one, but it had been a grind. That was Hayg Badem lit the fuse on a firework of a hand, shoving blind on blind with ace-nine for twenty big blinds. Sanchez snap-called in the big blind with ace-king.

Although a 71% favourite pre-flop, Badem flopped a nine to send Sanchez all but out of the door. That was until a king hit on the river, with Sanchez hitting his three outer to stay alive. Badem's last two big blinds went the way of Hartmann and suddenly we were three-handed.

Three-Handed Deal Negotiations
Three-Handed Deal Negotiations

Agreeing to a Deal

It took half an hour of three-handed play for the prospect of a deal to come up. When it did so, Sanchez held a slight lead with both Hartmann and Aceto tied for second in chips. After some negotiations, a deal was confirmed that left €20,000 for the winner.

NameChip CountPayout
Yves Sanches40,700,000€ 84,934
Tim Hartmann30,600,000€ 80,782
Morgan Aceto30,600,000€ 80,782

Following the deal, things began to go wrong for Aceto. It started by check-calling all three streets against Sanchez, only for his opponent to have flopped the nut straight. Then after getting it in dominatingly ahead against the same opponent, this time Sanchez rivered a straight to eliminate Aceto in third.

If the final table was a rollercoaster, the heads-up battle at the end of it was more akin to an arm wrestle. With the blinds at 600,000/1,200,000, big leads were opened in the blink of an eye. The chip lead changed hands no less three times in half an hour as each player looked like they would take off into the sunset.

That player was Hartmann. He bided his time eventually held 80% of the chips in play, and shoved with pocket threes only for Sanchez to call with pocket sevens.

"Pre-flop I thought when I saw his hand, 'OK, we're even again,'" Hartmann told us afterwards. "But, I mean we're even, it's ok. When I saw the flop I just thought 'Let it be over now!'

Hartmann flopped a flush draw. Then turned an open-ended straight draw. Then, perhaps fittingly, the ace hit on the river, completing his straight and handing the 29-year-old victory.

"Normally I believe in too many outs," said Hartmann. "But luckily this time..." He trailed off. Perhaps thinking about the hand, or more likely the more than €100,000 in prize money.

Tim Hartmann moved all in for 76,400,000 and Yves Sanchez called all in for his last 25,300,000.

Yves Sanchez: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Tim Hartmann: {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}

The flop came {2-Spades}{5-Spades}{10-Spades} giving Hartmann a flush draw. The turn {4-Clubs} gave him extra straight outs, meaning he had 17 outs that would see him take down the title.

The {a-Diamonds} was one of them, sending Sanchez to the rail.

The 60-year-old was the oldest player at the final table, and is the head of a fruit and vegetable import/export company.

Although not a regular player, he says he likes to play on instinct and was the chip leader three-handed when the deal was struck, meaning he takes home €84,934 after his second place.

The psychology student who discovered poker three years ago finished in second place in the standings heading into the final day.

"I qualified on Winamax.fr two months ago," said the 23 year-old, who needed to finish sixth to beat his largest all-time cash and did so in some style, taking home €80,782 after the three-way deal.

"How Can We Not Come Back?" Winamax Event Manager Matthieu Duran Talks Spanish SISMIX Success

Nível 48 : 400,000/800,000, 800,000 ante
Matthieu Duran
Matthieu Duran

Matthieu Duran can only be described as a mix between a tournament director, a tournament broadcaster and a poker site ambassador. He is a compere, a hype-man, a presenter, a host, and is the main promoter of the SISMIX as a tournament concept.

You get the sense from speaking to him, that the SISMIX – or indeed any Winamax live event – is really his baby.

Uprooting the SISMIX from the Casino de Marrakech to the Gran Casino Costa Brava here Lloret De Mar is clearly a decision not taken lightly by him or his team, and they knew they would need the perfect venue to do justice to the tournament and its rich history of catering to recreational and professional players, both on and off the felt.

Duran says that the decision to have the SISMIX in Spain was an easy one, considering Winamax’s launch in the country in July 2018.

“We spoke with casinos who had the perfect setup because to make SISMIX the minimum thing you need is a pool and a casino. Eventually everyone here in Lloret De Mar understood what we were trying to do; both the casino and the hotel agreed and we went from there! Once we had all that; a hotel, a pool and a casino we were ready, but it was February so we were all in a bit of a rush.”

Record numbers at the Winamax SISMIX festival in 2018 saw the Main Event break the record for the largest tournament ever held in Africa, six-max or otherwise. With Lloret De Mar’s proximity to mainland France likely to cause an increase in attendance, Duran was expecting a 25-35% increase but got much more than he bargained for.

Matthieu Duran
Matthieu Duran

“Everything’s doubled,” he said. “I had 60 tables in Marrakech, but here we have 123. I had 84 dealers in Marrakech and here we have 163.”

The warning signs, if you can call them that, came during mid-February when the first SISMIX Main Event satellite attracted 1,000 entries.

“I came into the office on Monday and saw the figure of 18 packages, and I figured there must have been some sort of mistake. But then the next one got 14 [packages] and from there it was 8-10 per satellite!"

Duran had bargained on every qualifier bringing an additional player with them, but once pre-registration opened online, it became apparent that for every Main Event buy-in purchased, there were 2.5 side event buy-ins purchased.

“So it wasn’t a case of one player coming with each qualifier, but two!”

Winamax SISMIX 2019
Winamax SISMIX 2019

The increase in numbers has brought mixed feelings for Duran.

“I’m so happy but so frustrated that some players have been unable to play because of how full we are.”

Earlier in the week, after stronger than expected numbers in earlier tournaments, the decision was then made to alter the structure of the Main Event from a single re-entry per flight, to a freezeout with Day 1d as a re-entry.

“That decision was an ugly one for me, but the really ugly one was the decision that we had to cancel satellites for the Main Event. I was so sad because this event is for people who come with their friends and who don’t have €500 in their pockets. They share a room with their friends and play a €100 satellite and see how lucky you are.

“And for all of those I had to cancel satellites. That made me sick. Sincerely, I could have cried because I build events for recreational players; most of my players play 1-2 events a year. They come here to have fun and to play.”

“It’s low buy-in but high quality. I try to have the best value for money you can imagine. The value for money is very high. I think the best worldwide, maybe.”

Winamax SISMIX 2019
Winamax SISMIX 2019

Duran genuinely gushes about this event, and it’s clear to see why, with hundreds of players enjoying the unique atmosphere this festival brings.

“This event is so Winamax. It’s a perfect mix of poker, the party atmosphere of Marrakech and the socialising we have in Dublin. When you see around the pool you see people all around just chatting and socialising. What we want is everyone to feel like they’re the same. A Winamax event is where you can meet Davidi [Kitai] and you can have a drink with him.

“They might just want a selfie, but they might end up playing beer pong with him. Or at the same poker table you might play with a professional poker player and a recreational one from somewhere around France.”

Already working on next year, Duran says there's no reason why the SISMIX can't come back to Lloret De Mar, potentially as a second event alongside its Marrakech counterpart.

“How can we not come back to Lloret De Mar?” said Duran. “There’s no way we can’t come back! We’re brain-storming ideas at head office, and we’ll see what happens. But one thing is for certain, two SISMIX would be better than one!"

Hartmann bet the {9-Clubs} river and Aceto folded. The German showed {q-Clubs}9s, easily beating the {10-Hearts}{5-Spades} of his opponent.

Yves Sanchez: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

Sanchez was a 71% favourite to double up and leave Badem with just 500,000 in chips, but the {q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop turned things on its head.

The turn was the {a-Hearts} but the river {k-Spades} was met with shock by the rail as the dealer double-checked the stacks, with Sanchez left with crumbs.

Leandry Ainonkpo moved all in for 3,100,000 from the button and Morgan Aceto called in the big blind.

"Here we go again," said Ainonkpo as he turned over {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} against the {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs} of Aceto.

However, Ainonkpo received no help on the {8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{k-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} runout and he was eliminated on the very first hand back from dinner.

The 22-year-old online qualifier won a €50 satellite and now takes home €32,000 for his fifth place finish.

Prior to the final table he said: " I get the impression that a lot of players are relaxing today, and the hardest part remains to be done: to get the €120,000 for the win, after which I will be able to party with my friends, keep €50,000 to play poker and to invest the rest."

Jeffrey van den Heuvel moved all in from the cutoff for 3,650,000 and Tim Hartmann called in the big blind.

Jeffrey van den Heuvel: {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Tim Hartmann: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

There was a nine for both players on the {4-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} flop, but it gave Van den Heuvel a flush draw as well. The turn {10-Clubs} and river {8-Clubs} bricked and he was eliminated in sixth place for €24,000.

When asked for his thoughts on the SISMIX festival, Van den Heuvel enthusiastically replied "I fucking love it!"

"The tournament is fabulous, the dealers are super-efficient and it plays fast, we can not ask for better."

The part-time bartender from Amsterdam devotes 3-4 days a week, but says that he spent too much time at the tables to really enjoy the atmosphere of the SISMIX. He said that he arrived too late to register for the beer pong tournament, so his friends organized their own!
