Lisawad Leads Day 2 of PokerStars Championship Macau

Day 2 of the PokerStars Championship Macau saw 26 new entrants anteing up the HK$42,400 buy-in before late registration closed at 4:30pm to bring the total number of players up to 536 for the Championship’s Asian debut.

After six levels of Day 2 play, just 151 remain in contention to battle it out for the massive HK$ 20,796,000 (~US$ 2,676,731) prize pool.

With a staggering HK$3,130,000 (~US$402,874) on offer for first place, in addition to the trophy and the title, the competition for the hallowed money spots will be fierce as just 103 of the remaining field will get paid, with a min-cash good for HK$ 62,500 (~US$ 8,044).

When you consider the fact PSC Macau is nearly double the buy-in of the May 2016 APPT 10 Macau Main Event – which attracted 533 runners and the Championship replaced – this is an impressive feat.

It is still far too early to tell who will be joining US professionals Christian Harder and Kenneth Smaron on the Pokerstars Championship Main Event throne, though the man best positioned to do so is Thailand’s Pakani Lisawad who bagged up 301,200 in chips at the close of play.

Lisawad began the day as one of the shorter stacks with 47,600 in chips but pulled out all the stops to power into pole position as play progressed, flopping two pairs early on to send 2015 APPT Champion Tony Cheng to the rail.

Sitting just behind Lisawad with a stack of 275,700 is France’s Ivan Deyra who finished the day with a very respectable with 275,700. Hong Kong’s Chuanshu Chen (272,700), Belarus’ Kiryl Radzivonau (243,200) and France’s Fabrice Soulier (243,000) round out the top five.

Notables who failed to make the cut included Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal and Team Online’s Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew who both departed early on in proceedings.

Other big names who failed to go the distance were HK$400,000 Super High Roller Champion Steve O’Dwyer and the UK’s Jack Salter, who was unable to recreate the run of form that saw him go deep in the HK$206,000 Single Re-Entry Shot Clock. Salter departed alongside brother Louis, with Canada’s Daniel Dvoress, Australia’s Kelvin Beattie and US pro Isaac Haxton also failing to make the cut.

With action concluded for the day, players are headed to Pacha at Studio City for the PSC Macau Player Party – either to drown their sorrows or to celebrate making Day 3. Regardless of which, this promises to be a fun time for all though some may regret any excess come Thursday 6 April.

Paik Teaches Pressure Lesson

Having a big stack gives you a lot of leverage in poker tournaments; a lesson Albert Paik is keen to teach the rest of his table.

School was already in session in a three-way hand between Professor Paik (Ph.D. in aggression), Vitaly Tevis and Beh Kok Weng. We caught the action on the flop with the board reading and over 15,000 already in the pot just as Weng (small blind) and Paik (big blind) checked the action over to Tevis.

Tevis had obviously not done his homework and decided to take a stab for 4,800. Weng was another inattentive pupil slipping behind in his studies and he elected to make the call before Paik reiterated his point forcibly with a check-raise to 15,000 in total.

Tevis looked nonplussed by this turn of events but grudgingly found the fold, and after chewing it over so did Weng leaving Paik to drag in the pot and chip up further.

Deyra Takes a Bite Out of the Croc

Ivan Deyra opened to 3,000 from late position and Billy 'The Croc' Argyros bumped it up to 9,000 on the button. The blinds got out of the way and Deyra made the call.

The flop came and Deyra check-called a bet of 14,000 from the Croc, bringing the on the turn. Both players checked to see the peeled off the deck on the river.

Deyra decided to take the betting lead and fired out a bet of 18,500. Argyros agonized over the decision for a moment before tossing a call into the pot.

Deyra showed Argyros the bad news, tabling for a full house.

The numbers are in and the PokerStars Championship Macau has attracted a very respectable 536 entries, 234 of whom currently remain in contention.

The field is a veritable cultural melting pot and, while the majority of the field come from China (30%), the rest is a diverse mix of players from around the world, making this a truly international affair.

This has ballooned the prize pool to a whopping HK$20,796,000 (~US$2,676,731) with a massive HK$3,130,000 (~US$402,874) on offer for first place.

Soulier Takes the Chip Lead

Ryan Yu had a large stack of chips in front of him earlier, and he now has a lot less while Fabrice Soulier has heaps. In fact, we're pretty certain he's the current chip leader. We caught both of them in a recent hand.

Soulier raised to 2,500 from middle position and Guodong Sun called from the small blind and Yu called in the big blind. The flop came . All three players checked and the turn was the .

Sun elected to lead out, making it 3,300. Yu quickly folded but Soulier paused. He checked his cards again and raised to 9,900. Sun only took a moment to think before folding to the big stack.

High Rollers Aplenty, Wang Wins From Aido

With only the HK$80,000 Pot Limit Omaha High Roller running today it appears that many of the big buy-in players have opted to take a shot at the Main Event instead with Sergio Aido, Isaac Haxton, David Peters, Nick Petrangelo, Sam Greenwood and Dan Smith all busy beavering away here on Day 2.

Petrangelo and Peters are seated at different tables for a change, but Mikita Badziakouski and Davidi Kitai, who both final tabled the HK$206,000 Single Re-Entry Shot Clock on Tuesday 4 April, are amusingly seated at the same table once again in the Main Event.

James Chen told us he is planning on playing the second HK$200,000 Single Re-Entry Shot Clock tomorrow, unless of course he is still going in the Main. Currently Chen is seated at Billy the Croc’s table with the two players discussing strategy at present.

Another high roller who is in attendance and appears to be doing pretty well is Sergio Aido and we managed to catch the Spaniard in action in the following hand.

Pre-flop it was Aido who was the initial aggressor, opening the action with a raise to 2,000 from the hi-jack and finding a caller in Nianqing Wang, who chose to defend from the big blind.

Wang checked the flop over to Aido, who decided a c-bet was in order and bet out 1,500, which Wang quickly called.

Both players checked the turn opening the door for Wang to take a stab on the river and he reached for chips and tossed out a bet of 6,000.

Aido does not look thrilled about it but made a crying call and Wang rolled over the mighty for the turned boat. The Spanish player gave a wry grin and flashed his opponent pocket aces before tossing them into the muck.

O'Dwyer has Departed

We missed the action but caught Steve O'Dwyer standing up from the table.

The was laid out on the table in front of him and an opponent's . The board read and the pot was being awarded to O'Dwyer's opponent.

Bansal Gets Creative, Guo Profits

APT Main Event Champion Dong Guo opened the action with a raise from under the gun, neighbor Adrian Attenborough made the call, as did a player in the hijack before India’s Raghav Bansal squeezed to 6,500 from the button.

Guo tanked for what felt like an eternity, though was probably only a few minutes, before sliding in the call and Attenborough also came along for the ride. After the player in the hijack bowed out, they went three-way to an flop.

Guo and Attenborough checked it over to Bansal, who again fired for 6,500. Guo took his time once more before choosing to check-raise to 13,000.

Attenborough quickly mucked and while Bansal took slightly longer about it. He did too and Guo won a decent pot without showdown to pad out his already ample stack.

Soulier More Than Doubles Early in the First Level

Fabrice Soulier started the day with 77,000. We noted his seat draw early on as he was tablemates with big stacks Yao Meng, Ryan Yu, and Kitty Kuo as well.

A stroll past French pro just 30 minutes later had our eyes drawn to his massive chip stack.

We caught him in a hand moments ago. Soulier three-bet a raise from the player on the button to 4,200 and was met with a call. The flop came and Soulier led out with a bet of 3,600. Also called.

The hit on the turn and both players checked to the on the river. Soulier fired a bet worth 4,900 and after a moment, his opponent called. Soulier tabled and his opponent mucked.
