Latorre Heats Up to End Day 1b With Lead

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jose Angel Latorre
Jose Angel Latorre

Like a racehorse waiting for the very last stretch to make his move, Jose Latorre waited until there was about 30 minutes left in the night on Day 1b of PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event before turning on the jets and racing to the top of the leaderboard.

Latorre finished the eight-level grind with 243,800, giving him a wide lead over the players who paced the Day 1a field as well as Thomas Steinbicker, who finished Day 1b with 201,500. He's best known for his exploits in online sit-n-goes as "Cejakas14" but also has nearly $200,000 in live cashes.

Two huge hands at the end of the night powered Latorre's move. With unknown action ahead of him at 400/800/100, Latorre put in 8,100 in the big blind and saw Rory Brennan make it 20,500. Latorre peeled with ace-king and saw the turn for free, turning a king after three wheel cards flopped. Latorre check-called 14,500 and then won the pot at showdown.

That pushed Latorre past 110,000, but an even bigger pot was in the offing. Latorre got all in on the turn on a board with three clubs against a similarly stacked opponent who held king-ten of clubs for a king-high flush. Unfortunately for him, Latorre held ace-nine of clubs for the nuts and vaulted into his massive lead.

PokerStars Team Pros also had a productive day. While Vanessa Selbst hit the rail, she had at least three teammates make it through. Andre Akkari (123,300), Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (57,700) and Marcin Horecki (15,300) all found bags.

Grospellier has been in the midst of a resurgence after a top 13 runs at PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo and PokerStars Championship Sochi before a second-place finish at the $111K One Drop at the World Series of Poker.

Fabian Quoss, Adam Owen, Koray Aldemir, Dietrich Fast, Ari Engel and Parker Talbot also survived.

A total of 1,233 turned up for Day 1b, pushing the two-day total to 1,670. There's still time for players to buy in though, until Day 2 gets going. The late registrants and the remaining players will be back at Casino Barcelona at noon on Wednesday for Day 2. Blinds and antes will be 500/1,000/100, and all the action will be documented here on PokerNews.

Jose Angel Latorre
Jose Angel Latorre

During the last thirty minutes of the day, Jose Angel Latorre has grabbed a massive chip lead in a big flush over flush situation. Holding {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, Latorre got his entire stack of 119,400 in on a {J-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} board.

His unfortunate opponent Majid Noubarian was playing {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and was all in for 117,000, which he had to fork over to his Spanish adversary.

Swedish ultra high-stakes phenom Viktor "Isildur1" Blom has been eliminated from the PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event. Blom's chair was empty when we arrived at the table.

According to one of the players at the table, Blom got it in with {A-}{Q-} against {A-}{J-} for his last 14,000 or so. A jack landed on the flop to end the Swedish poker prodigy's run.

Fang Survives

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Giada Fang
Giada Fang

Giada Fang saw her tournament life hang by a shred when she was all in preflop with {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} against Aleksei Opalikhin's {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} and a third player with {Q-}{Q-}.

Luckily for Fang, the board ran out {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and Fang rivered the wheel to chop the main pot with Opalikhin and divide the third player's stack.

Moreno Finds the Call Button for Piles

Nível 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Andrew Moreno
Andrew Moreno

Three players built a pot of about 12,000 preflop, and Jorma Nuutinen bet 4,000 from the big blind on the {6-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} flop. Andrew Moreno called on the button. The turn was an {a-Diamonds} and Nuutinen kept the aggression coming with 9,000. Again, Moreno called. On the {8-Hearts} river, Nuutinen put in his remaining 19,225.

This gave Moreno serious pause. He thought things over for a couple of minutes, as the shove was for most of his own stack — he'd have about 10,000 if he called and lost. Finally, he splashed in a call.

Nuutinen slapped down {5-Spades}{2-Clubs} for an airball. Moreno showed {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

Malec Sits Down; Drags A Big One

Nível 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Sebastian Malec
Sebastian Malec

EPT13 Barcelona winner Sebastian Malec has joined in his quest to repeat his performance last year when he conquered a 1,785-strong field. Malec cashed an astonishing €1,122,800 and instantly became a recognizable face on the circuit.

The Pole found himself in a substantial pot right away against Bart Kuiper. Kuiper, who was seated under the gun, bet a little over 10,000 on a {J-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts} board, a substantial bet in relation to the pot. Malec spent nearly four minutes thinking, using his fingers to count the combo's, before flicking in a single chip to call.

Kuiper showed {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for busted straight and flush draws, and Malec scooped up the pot with {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.
