Kaverman Wins First Heat

Two succeeding pots gave Byron Kaverman the victory in the first heat of this heads-up match.

In the first hand, Kaverman had {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and lured Tom Marchese into the pot. Preflop he made the minimum raise to 4,800 and Marchese called with {J-Spades}{9-Spades}.

Marchese check-called three streets on {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds} and was left with only 15,000 chips.

In the next hand, Marchese pushed all-in with {K-Spades}{6-Hearts}, but was dominated by the {6-Clubs}{A-Clubs} from Kaverman, who had to call quickly, because he ran out of time.

He needed a king to survive, but the board ran out an uneventful {Q-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, handing Kaverman the win in this first heat.

All Even Now

The players reached the 1,000/2,000-level and the stacks are even. This match has taken a while and Kaverman has used most of his game clock. He only has three minutes left, which could get him in trouble. If he times out, he's only getting four seconds for every action.

Marchese Finds Another Double

Tom Marchese has doubled again and now this match is almost even.

With the blinds up to 800/1,600, Byron Kaverman decided to shove all-in with {K-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Marchese had only 22,000 chips left and made the call with {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

He was in great shape with his jacks, although Kaverman picked up a gutshot on the {3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}-flop. Neither the {10-Hearts}-turn or {3-Spades}-river could help Kaverman and Marchese doubled and almost levelled this first heat.

Marchese Doubles Up

Tom Marchese was down to 15,000 in chips in the 500/1,000-level. Byon Kaverman put him to the test by shoving all-in with {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Marchese quickly made the call holding {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}.

The flop was {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, giving Kaverman a pair tens and a straight draw, but Marchese had the higher straight draw and a flush draw. The {5-Clubs} on the turn gave him the flush. The river was another club with the {4-Clubs} and Marchese doubled to 30 big blinds.

Kaverman Fills Up

Byron Kaverman took an early chip lead in hand two of this match.

He raised to 1,200 while holding {A-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and Tom Marchese made the call with {K-Spades}{9-Hearts}.

Kaverman flopped trips on the {8-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}-board, while Marchese made top pair. Kaverman fired out a bet of 1,240 and Marchese check-called. He did the same on the {5-Clubs}-turn when Kaverman bet 2,000.

The river was the {5-Diamonds} which gave Kaverman a full house and after a check from Marchese he fired again. This time for 3,100 and Marchese made the call.

In the next hand, Marchese lost some more when he threw in a four-bet to 11,800 with {A-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. Kaverman had {K-Clubs}{J-Spades} and made the call. The flop came down {9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and Kaverman decided to push. Marchese thought for a while before he let it go.

What's at Stake?

With only five more weeks to go in the regular season, today's matches are very important in the race for the playoff spots.

After Week 14 only the top four teams from each conference will qualify for the playoffs in Las Vegas. Currently, the Mets and the Rounders are tied in third place with 120 points.

If either Byron Kaverman or Tom Marchese can sweep this match, they will score nine points. This will put them in a great spot to make the playoffs.

Byron Kaverman already played this week's 6-max matches for the Sao Paulo Metropolitans two days ago and now he is back for the heads-up action.

So far, both players haven't had much success in this heads-up format in the Global Poker League. Kaverman only competed in one heads-up match, which he lost 2-1 against Mustapha Kanit.

Tom Marchese played four mano-a-mano battles in the GPL and only won one of them. He defeated Anthony Zinno 2-1, but lost all of his other matches with the same result.
