Chip and a Chair for Sun

Nível 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

In the last hand before the break, Liwei Sun and Torsti Kettula clashed in a pot that saw both players all in before the flop with Kettula at risk for his last 113,900. Sun had him covered by only two big blinds and flipped with {J-Hearts} {J-Spades} against the {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades} of the Finn.

The board ran out {A-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} and Sun needs a miracle when play resumes.

Ivarsson's Hidden Flush

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

Alexander Ivarsson raised before the flop to 6,000 from the cutoff and Alain Goldberg three-bet from the button to 17,000. The action folded back to Ivarsson and he made the call.

The flop came down {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and both players checked. On the turn the {8-Hearts} hit and Ivarsson lead out for 19,000. Goldberg made the call and on the river the {6-Hearts} hit. Ivarsson bet 44,300 and Goldberg made the call again.

Ivarsson showed {K-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, as he had made runner-runner flush and he raked in this huge pot.

Chartier With Three Barrels

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Samuel Chartier
Samuel Chartier

Sam Chartier bet the {7-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {10-Spades} flop for 7,600 after Dorin Rauta in the blinds had checked to the start-of-the-day chip leader. Rauta called and did so again for 20,800 on the {4-Clubs} turn before the {A-Hearts} fell on the river. Rauta checked for a third time and now Chartier bet 28,000.

"Nice river," the Romanian said and mucked his cards.

Shetta and Moger Shut Down

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

Tournament director Teresa Nousiainen informed us that Sami Shetta busted with {A-} {Q-} against the {A-} {K-} of an opponent.

Then it was the turn of Gyorgy Moger to double up. He moved all in for 38,900 from middle position and Diego Zeiter called from two seats over. Everyone else including David Vamplew folded and Moger's {5-Diamonds} {5-Spades} ended up second best to the {8-Hearts} {8-Clubs} of Zeiter on a board of {K-Spades} {J-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {8-Spades} {2-Clubs}.

Eight Players Remain in the Hunt to Become the EPT's First Double Male Champion

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Benny Spindler

The hunt for the first double European Poker Tour champion was a story that lasted almost ten seasons and nearly 100 stops. While other major tours around the globe celebrated double, triple and even quadruple champions, the EPT celebrated only new champions at every stop.

The EPT grew into the biggest and richest poker tour in the world and it seemed everyone wanted in. Because of that, it became a lot harder to get out with one trophy, let alone two. Vicky Coren finally got the monkey off the tour’s back by taking down EPT Sanremo in Season 10, seven seasons and a 82 events after she won EPT London on her home turf.

Now that Coren’s won two, what do we look for now? The first man to win two titles, is what!

Generally, a Main Event would get to Day 3 and media covering the event would naturally start seeking out all remaining champions. As a tournament reporter, one gets great satisfaction from tracking the eventual winner’s progress from a long way out. To be able to track a player to a second title would take it to another level.

Here in Malta we’ve made Day 3 of the Main Event so it’s time to seek out those double-chasing players. Eight in all made it through to the start of the day and are listed below in a table showing their previous win and stacks at the start of play.

All would love to become the first male double champion, but Kevin Schulz, the 2015 PCA Main Event champ, has another achievement to aim for that the others can’t – to be the first player to win two titles in one season. If he were to achieve that it would be remarkable and we could be waiting another 20 seasons without it being repeated.

If you had checked on his stack with 15 minutes to go before the end of Day 2, you would’ve said he had no chance to win. That's because he was sitting with just 15,000 at the time. Somehow the American managed to spin that up to 127,000 by the end of the day to have real momentum for Day 3.

Two players who won’t be joining Vicky Coren as a double champion in Malta are Jake Cody and Sotirios Koutoupas. The Team PokerStars Pro and last season’s Deauville champion came into the day as the two shortest stacks of our former champions and failed to make it past the first level.

Cody three-bet all in with ace-three but Filippo Lazzaretto, who had opened with big slick, called and flopped a king. The Brit was drawing dead by the turn. Koutoupas made it to the river in a pot with Raphael Blouet but folded, which left him short. He busted in unknown action soon after.

Be sure to stick with the PokerNews coverage throughout this Day 3 as we’ll try to keep a close eye on the six players who can still mark out their own little patch of poker history.

"It's Good When You Don't Know"

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Jannick Wrang
Jannick Wrang

Jannick Wrang in the big blind called a late position raise to 6,000. The EPT Campione champion checked on {2-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} and a 7,000 continuation bet followed. Wrang made it 20,800, and called the shove for 70,000 total that followed.

Wrang had {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and was up against {A-}{K-} off suit. Wrang hit his flush with the {4-Diamonds} on the turn and the {3-Hearts} on the river couldn't save his opponent.

When asked how much Wrang was playing, he laughed "It's good when you don't know" After having counted his numerous stacks, he got to about 415,000.

Huber Eliminated

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante

Stefan Huber was seen heading for the exit, wishing Sam Chartier a good continuance of his tournament.

Chartier told us Huber had made a three bet with {A-}{Q-} only to get called by Dorin Rauta. Both players checked the {9-}{8-}{2-} flop, and Huber got his chips in when the {Q-} hit the turn. It turned out he had no more outs with his {A-}{Q-}, the man from Suisse was up against {J-}{10-} for the nuts.

The river couldn't save Huber and he made his way to the exit.
