Spain's Javier Gomez Zapatero Leads Surviving 56 Players at the End of Day 3

Nível 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Javier Gomez Zapatero
Javier Gomez Zapatero

Day 3 of the European Poker Tour Malta Main Event saw 186 of a 895-player field return for five 90-minute levels of play, during which time the money bubble burst and the top 127 earned a piece of the €4,340,750 prize pool. By the time players bagged and tagged for the night, just 56 remained in contention for the €810,400 first-place prize.

After the dust had settled, it was Spain's Javier Gomez Zapatero and his stack of 1.698 million leading the way.

Gomez Zapatero began his ascent in Level 15 (1,500/3,000/400) when he opened under the gun and then four-bet to 35,000 after Nandor Solyom three-bet to 15,400 from the cutoff seat. A call was made, the flop fell {10-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, and Gomez Zapatero continued for 33,000. Another call followed and Gomez Zapatero fired another 54,000 on the {6-Spades} turn. Again Solyom called, and then the {5-Clubs} river saw both players check. The Spaniard showed the {A-Spades}{5-Spades} for a pair of fives, and surprisingly it was good as Solyom mucked his cards. From there, Gomez Zapatero just continued to build.

Over the first two levels of the day, 59 players hit the rail without a penny to show for it including Artem Litvinov, Jan Bendik, Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody, Sotirios Koutoupas, Sami Shetta, Senh Ung, and EPT Grand Final runner-up Jack Salter, who became free to attend the European Poker Awards, for which he is a "Breakout Player of the Year" nominee, later in the evening.

In Level 16 (2,000/4,000/500), Bulgarian Atanas Kavrakov, winner of the World Poker Tour National Cyprus back in January, was eliminated from the tournament in 128th position. It happened when he shoved his last 36,000 holding the {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and Brazil's Bruno Volkmann called with the {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. The {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop gave Kavrakov an added flush draw to go with his overs, but he blanked as the turn and river were running sevens, thus guaranteeing the remaining players at least €9,120.

From there, the in-the-money eliminations came at a rapid pace and included EPT Malta €25,000 High Roller runner-up Connor Drinan; EPT veteran Dan Smith; Olivier Busquet, who was just a part of a One Drop poker delegation; Shark Cage winner Griffin Benger; high roller Sorel Mizzi; Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel; former EPT champ Benny Spindler; the UK's Sam Trickett; and reigning World Series of Poker champ Martin Jacobson.

For a thorough look at the history of poker in Malta, check out our feature post titled EPT Malta Shakes Up Portomaso Casino's All-Time Money List.

While many fell, some notable players punched their ticket to Day 4 including Jorma Nuutinen (1.121 million), Sergio Aido (833,000), Antonin Duda (681,000), Noah Vaillancourt (629,000), Sam Chartier (536,000), former EPT London champ Robin Ylitalo (487,000), Fedor Holz (422,000), Ignat "0Human0" Liviu (312,000), JC Alvarado (274,000), and PokerStars-Sponsored Player Dominik Panka (176,000).

Day 4 will kick off at 12 p.m. local time on Thursday, and the plan is to either play five 90-minute levels or down to the final 16 players, whichever comes first. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be there every step of the way.

Reigning World Series of Poker Main Event Champ Sent to the Rail

Nível 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

The betting details of reigning World Series of Poker Main Event champ Martin Jacobson's demise escaped us, but it appeared he three-bet jammed over the top of Jorma Nuutinen's open. The latter player made the call to put Jacobson at risk.

Jacobson: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Nuutinen: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

It was a classic race, but Jacobson was the one that needed to improve to stay alive.

The {4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop was as dry as could be, and the {4-Spades} turn didn't do him any favors. Jacobson needed either an ace or nine on the river to survive, but it wasn't in the cards as the {4-Clubs} blanked. Jacobson, who is nominated for "Tournament Performance of the Year" in tonight's European Poker Awards, made his way to the payout desk and confirmed that he will be making an appearance at the award ceremony being held next door in the Hilton Hotel.

Trickett Trounced By Shatilov

Nível 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Sam Trickett
Sam Trickett

A big hand just took place up on the feature table, one that saw the elimination of Sam Trickett.

It began when Trickett opened for 16,000 from early position and Andrey Shatilov three-bet to 41,000 from the cutoff. Action folded back to Trickett, and he thought for well over a minute before four-betting all in for 357,000. Shatilov, who barely had the bigger stack, snap-called.

Shatilov: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Trickett: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

As it turned out, Trickett picked a bad spot to shove, and he paid the ultimate price after the board ran out {q-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. The stacks were counted down to make sure, and when all was said and done Trickett had been eliminated from the EPT Malta Main Event.

Alec Torelli Eliminated in 65th Place

Nível 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Alec Torelli
Alec Torelli

Alec Torelli didn't have the easiest of tables today, especially Alexander Ivarsson on his left must have been a pain. The Swede could be described as the table menace, constantly involved in hands and winning most of them. Just now, the two of them clashed in a big way.

Torelli opened the button for 17,000 and Ivarsson in the small blind made the call. The big blind over called and both of them checked to Torelli on {5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. Torelli followed his pre flop aggression up with a bet of 22,000 and just Ivarsson called, the big blind folded.

Ivarsson check called another 58,000 on the {9-Hearts} turn and the two of them saw the {2-Hearts} appear on the river. Ivarsson checked a third time and Torelli bet 95,000 with 175,000 behind. After a short pause it was Ivarsson announcing all in, getting the red triangle thrown in front of him even before he got a chip in the middle.

"Wow, maybe I should have checked the river" Torelli pondered, "I have a good hand to call with"

Ivarsson wasn't saying a thing, just looking down without moving.

"I need a second here guys" Torelli said while stroking his chin.

After a minute more, Torelli made the call. Ivarsson showed {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs} for the flopped set and Torelli mucked. The dealer informed Torelli he was obligated to show his hand and Torelli said "Yeah no worries, I had ace king" while the dealer flashed his {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}.

Ivarsson is up to 1,250,000 in chips (156 big blinds), Torelli is on his way cashing €12,800 for his 65th place.

Moolhuizen Can't Call

Nível 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Mateusz Moolhuizen
Mateusz Moolhuizen

Before the flop a player opened, Andrea Cortellazzi made the call, and Mateusz Moolhuizen on the button over called.

Both players checked to Moolhuizen on {J-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and the Dutchman bet 18,000. The initial raiser folded. Cortellazzi made the call. Both players checked the {8-Diamonds} on the turn and the {Q-Clubs} completed the board. Cortellazzi grabbed his stack of yellow 25,000 chips, and plummeted them in front of him just over the line.

Moolhuizen, having to decide for the nearly 200,000 he still had left (33 big blinds), was kind of sweating. He had a tough decision and after some time, Cortellazzi called the clock.

Ok sir, you have one minute"

"Will you show if I fold?" Moolhuizen asked. "No" was the simple answer by Cortellazzi.

"You want a call?" Moolhuizen asked next. No answer this time.

"Thirty seconds sir" the floor informed Moolhuizen after some more thinking.

"Where are you from?" Moolhuizen continued his interrogation. "Italy" cooperated Cortellazzi. "You?" the Italian asked. "Holland" Moolhuizen answered.

"Ten seconds sir" and the floor started the countdown. "Ten, nine,..."

"You like Holland?" Moolhuizen asked. Cortellazzi made a motion with his hand to indicate he had no particular opinion on The Netherlands as a country.

"Eight, seven, six, five,..."

Moolhuizen was still doubting what to do.

"Four, three, two,..."

Moolhuizen had some chips in his hand to be able to call at the last moment, but didn't. He slid his cards forward with one second to go and continued with his 33 big blind stack.

James Hartigan Elaborates on the New EPT Not Live Podcast

Nível 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
James Hartigan & Joe Stapleton
James Hartigan & Joe Stapleton

Earlier this month, PokerStars launched a brand new podcast called 'EPT Not Live,' a weekly show will be hosted by EPTLive commentators, James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton. Since 2007 EPTLive has been an integral part of the European Poker Tour's success, and now that team aims to bring the same thoughtful, engaging and light-hearted poker content to the popular podcast platform.

"If the EPT were a movie, this would be the DVD commentary," said Stapleton. "Although most of our audience probably doesn’t know what a DVD is, so I think this is probably best explained by a series of emojis. If you like the EPT, this show will make you :-), (y), and XD."

The podcast, which will go behind the scenes at live events, interview celebrities, members of Team PokerStars Pro and online qualifiers, and give listeners the chance to win exclusive prizes, launched its first-ever episode with mixed martial arts legend and poker enthusiast, Tito Ortiz, which you can listen to here.

PokerNews recently chatted with Hartigan about EPT Not Live:

PokerNews: What inspired you guys to launch get into the podcast business?

Hartigan: We wanted to fill the void in between live streams. Judging by our respective Twitter timelines, there are a lot of people out there who enjoy watching EPTLive and get desperate and lonely when we’re not on their computers talking irreverent nonsense over pictures of poker players. So, we decided to give them what they want. Granted, we’ve taken away the pictures of people playing poker, but there’s plenty of irreverent chat.

It’s clear some people treat EPTLive like a radio show. They minimize the video window and just listen to the commentary. Also, numerous fans have asked over the years why we don’t do a podcast. When you consider that Joe has oodles of experience at presenting and producing podcasts and I come from a radio background, it kinda makes sense for us to go down this route.

Since it's not live, does the podcast afford you any opportunities you don't usually have on EPTLive? How about filthy language, will we be hearing any expletives?

Well, the audience may not be hearing it live, but we’re hoping to present it live. So, there will be mistakes, and there may be the occasional expletive.

The main opportunity the podcast affords us is to peel back the curtain a little bit on the EPT. We’ll talk about what we get up to when we’re on tour, and showcase material from the TV shows — including some of Joe’s more obscene jokes — that didn’t make the edit.

And we’ll invite listeners on air. In the ‘Superfan vs Stapes’ segment, EPT obsessives will compete against Joe, with an exclusive ‘Everyone Loves a Chop Pot’ T-shirt on the line.

The logo for the podcast is pretty epic. Where did it come from and what are your thoughts on it?

I love it! Everyone was worried I’d be offended by my caricature. But I think the artist captured my features perfectly. My colleague Ben Strivens came up with the original concept, so credit to him – and to the designers at PokerStars for crafting the finished logo.

Hopefully, the logo sends the message that this show is a bit of fun. It’s designed to be a lot more laid back than the EPT TV shows or live streams. It’s an entertainment show about poker. We’re not talking industry news, or listing results. But we will talk about Joe’s Tinder exploits at the PCA.

What was it like recording your first EPT Not Live podcast? Did you do it at the PCA?

No, we caught up with Tito via Skype. We’re trying to record the show as a continuous 60-75 minute chunk; like a radio show that’s not on the radio. There are no plans at the moment to record interviews and produce features on location. We like the comfort of our studio.

When, where and how will you be recording the podcast? Will it be recorded at all EPT events? What about when an EPT event isn't happening?

Did I mention that we have a very comfortable studio? It’s actually the same booth where we voice the EPT TV shows. The podcast will be published on a Friday. But we won’t be taking EPT Not Live on the road, because we’ll be too busy hosting EPTLive. The idea is that EPT Not Live only exists when EPTLive doesn’t. Does that make sense?

We’ll take a retrospective look at live events. During the weeks/months when there isn’t an EPT going on, we’ll focus on the TV shows (they’re on every week on major TV networks around the world and at YouTube.com/PokerStars) and hear about Joe’s adventures in online poker.

Have you recorded other episodes? If so, can you share what listeners can expect?

In the next couple of weeks, we’ll look back at the last EPT Deauville, and interview ElkY about his deep run in the Main Event there. Plus, we’ll catch up with Dominik Panka, who’s a big character in the EPT Barcelona TV shows.

If you could choose anyone in the world to interview on your podcast, who would it be and why?

Well, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig are all on the wish list. I guess there SHOULD be a poker angle to the interview, so Daniel “Epic Slowroll” Craig takes priority. But, to be honest, I’d settle for anyone who’s appeared in a James Bond film who knows the ranking of hands.

PokerStars/EPT Well Represented at Tonight's European Poker Awards

Nível 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Dominik Panka

Day 3 of the European Poker Tour Malta Main Event is taking center stage this afternoon, but tonight, after players have bagged and tagged, attention will shift to the 14th Annual European Poker Awards (EPA). The awards, organized by the Global Poker Index, will be held next door at the luxurious Hilton Hotel, marking the first time in its history that it hasn't been held in France.

The EPA is sponsored by PokerStars and Roger Dubuis, and will recognize players, industry figures, and events by doling out 13 awards to those who contributed the most to the growth of the game in 2014.

For instance, Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree will be honored as the GPI Female Player of the Year, while EPT regular Ole Schemion will take down GPI Player of the Year honors. Interestingly, both PokerStars and the EPT have strong ties to other categories.

EPT Live commentary is nominated for Media Content of the Year (other nominees include: Nosebleed documentary by Victor Saumont; Neil Stoddart's pictures; and Remko Rinkema's videos), while EPT President Edgar Stuchly is nominated for Industry Person of the Year (alongside Hermance Blum, General Manager WPT Europe; King's Casino Leon Tsoukernik; and Dusk Till Dawn owner Rob Young).

Likewise, PokerStars' Helping Hands Charity Tournament and partner Right to Play, Quintessentially Foundation are two of the nominees in Charitable Initiative of the Year (along with REG Charity and WPT UK Charity Raffle), and Shark Cage has been nominated for Poker Innovation of Initiative of the Year (along with Expresso, Winamax Poker; Unibet launching its own gaming platform; and the WPT 500 expanding into new markets).

Regarding Events of the Year, EPT Main Event in Barcelona, Prague and Vienna earned nominations in the buy-in €2,000+ category (the other nominee being Master Classics of Poker Amsterdam), while the Estrellas Poker Tour Barcelona and Eureka Poker Tour Prague got the nod in buy-ins up to €2,000 (the other two being Battle of Malta and WPT500 at Dusk Till Dawn).

Meanwhile, reigning World Series of Poker Player of the Year and Team Pro George Danzer is nominated for Breakout Player of the Year alongside PokerStars-Sponsored Player Dominik Panka, EPT Grand Final runner-up Jack Salter; and EPT Deauville third-place finisher Oliver Price.

"Definitely excited," Panka told PokerNews on the last break. "It's like poker's Oscars. I'm very flattered that I am nominated."

Panka is also nominated for Tournament Performance of the Year for his victory in the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure where he denied Mike "Timex" McDonald his second EPT title.

"I think Tournament Performance of the Year seems better than Breakout Player of the Year, but I think Martin Jacobson, Davidi Kitai, and Vicky Coren played amazing final tables. I can't imagine they will pick me," Panka admitted. "To be honest, I think I have a decent shot at Breakout Player of the Year. No expectations, just fun."

Regardless of whether or not he makes it through Day 3, Panka confirms that he will be attending the awards ceremony scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

"I told them I would go, and I'm a man of my word," Panka deadpanned.

Martin Jacobson

With two nominations, Panka has double the chances of walking away with an award, but as he pointed out, he faces some stiff competition. In the Breakout Tournament Performance of the Year category, that includes Jacobson, the reigning WSOP Main Event champ who overcame a field of 6,683 players to win the $10,000,000 first-place prize.

"Just to be nominated, out of all the tournaments, my performance is nominated," said Jacobson, who is also in the money here in the EPT Malta Main Event. "That's pretty cool itself, so to win it would be awesome."

Jacobson also took a moment to reflect back on his performance in the WSOP Main Event: "It was very consistent until the last day, which was the first big pot I lost, when I dropped to fourth to eighth in chips. Then the final table bubble burst right after that. Then I just did a lot of work before the final table to make sure I was prepared as possible. The final table went really smooth as well obviously."

Jacobson confirmed that he will also be at the awards ceremony, though right now his focus is on surviving Day 3. Before we let him get back to it, we had to know, if he won an European Poker Award, would his display it next to his WSOP gold bracelet?

"I haven't managed to get it back to Europe yet," Jacobson said with a laugh, revealing that the bracelet is still in Vegas. That said, if he wins an EPA, or the EPT Main Event trophy for that matter, don't count on him leaving it behind in Malta!

PokerNews will be attending the European Poker Awards, so be sure to stay tuned in the coming days for results, videos, and more.

In one of the first hands after the break, Jonathan Duhamel shoved all in for 65,500 from the cutoff. Dorin Rauta on the button thought for some time, and made the call. Both blinds quickly folded.

Jonathan Duhamel: {A-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

The flop came {5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Spades} and Duhamel found a pair. The {Q-Diamonds} on the turn bricked but the {A-Spades} on the river made Duhamel escape elimination.

"Lucky" said Duhamel to Rauta with an almost apologetic voice. "Team Pro, it's normal" said Rauta with a smile while shaking hands with the man he just doubled up.
