The EPT is Back in Europe!

Casino Barrière de Deauville
Casino Barrière de Deauville

The European Poker Tour made a little side step to the beautiful Bahamas for the PCA last month, but now it's back on European Soil. The Deauville stop at the end of January has been a fixture in the schedule for years, and Season 11 is no exception.

The Main Event will start at 12 pm local time, so in about 90 minutes. The Main Event may just start today, but they have been playing poker here for days now. The €1,100 French Poker Series Deauville Main Event is down to its final day now with Argentina's Ivan "Negriin" Luca leading the final 22.

With the FPS High Roller on to Day 2 (144 remain, Cyrille Dupessey leads) and the €300 FPS Deauville Cup down to 33 players as well, it's going to be a crowded day here in Casino Barrière de Deauville.

A total of 119 players already registered for Day 1a. They include Christophe Ducrot, who won Season 4 of the French TV poker show Maison du Bluff, international chess master Gaby Livshitz who was runner-up in the Eureka Cup at EPT Prague in December, Kamel Tir who won last year's FPS High Roller, EPT Madrid champion Frederik Jensen, WSOP-E winner Adrian Mateos, EPT4 Prague winner Arnaud Mattern and EPT9 Deauville runner-up Walid Bou Habib.

In 2014 Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov finished runner up to Sotirios Koutoupas. What will 2015 have in store for us? Let's find out!

PokerNews.com will be here from start to finish for the Main Event and the €10,000 High Roller Single Re-Entry "8 Handed". The Main Event will start with 75-minute levels today, switching to 90-minute levels on Day 3. The plan for today is to play 8 levels:

Eight Levels Today

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Tournament director Thomas Lamatsch just announced that there will be eight levels of play today. After every two 75-minute level there will be a break, with a dinner break after level 6 which should be around 8 pm local time. Play is done around midnight. As you might expect, tomorrow on Day 1b it's the same thing all over again. Last but not least, Lamatsch emphasized that it's English only at the tables today.

The low grey skies outside the Casino Barrière are threatening rain and the high winds are buffeting the crying seagulls. A perfect day to be inside playing poker but, as is often the case, not everyone has made it to the tables for the start at the event and some players are left waiting for the action to begin.

Mathew Frankland was one who was sat at a table with just one other player who asked the floor when play would start. The floor explained that the minimum required was three but with all tables having sold at least four seats already and in most cases five it wouldn’t be long before action got underway.

Moments later two players sat down and Frankland abandoned his game of Pineapple on his phone to dive straight into the action. The under-the-gun player opened for 250 and Frankland popped it up to 750. The blinds folded and it was heads up to a flop of {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

Both players checked to see the turn card fall the {k-Hearts}. A check from the initial raiser prompted a bet of 850 from Franklnad and he took down the first pot.

Simpson Fires on All Three Streets

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Ian Simpson raised to 300 from under the gun and found calls from the players in the cutoff, small blind, and Anthony Michel Cruz in the big blind. All four players took a flop of {2-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{5-Spades} and there were two checks back to Simpson. He continued out for 750 and the cutoff let it go. The small blind folded as well and Cruz tossed out a call.

This left the duo heads up to see the {9-Hearts} on fourth street. Cruz checked for a second time, prompting Simpson to riffle through his chips. After a moment, he reached into his stack and continued the aggression with a bet of 1,700. Cruz quickly called.

The river was the {a-Spades} and Cruz tapped the table one final time. Simpson bet 4,000 and Cruz went deep into the tank. Roughly three minutes passed while Cruz pondered his action. Ultimately, he opted to kick his cards to the muck and Simpson was awarded the pot.

"As Played I Gotta Call!"

The player in the cutoff opened for 275 and Joao Vieira in the big blind was the sole caller.

Both players checked on {A-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{8-Clubs} and the {5-Diamonds} popped up on the turn. Vieira, who made the final table in the €10k in Prague last December, bet out 350. The cutoff made the call.

The {6-Hearts} on the river made Vieira bet out 825. The cutoff said "As played, I gotta call!" and fronted 825. He would soon get it back as Vieira tabled {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and the cutoff flipped over {A-Spades}{9-Hearts}.

Auer Plays the Board

Nível 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

As it goes in the early levels of a deep stacked tournament, most pots aren't getting all that big. We just saw someone run top full house into quads, and even that hand didn't totally get out of hand as the pot was "only" 10,000.

Just now Robert Auer opened for 200 under the gun on his 6-handed table. The player in the cutoff three bet to 650 and just Auer called. Both players checked the entire board of {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{K-Spades}{8-Hearts} and Auer announced he played the board before revealing {4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Auer's opponent tabled {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and took it down.
