Tournament director Thomas Lamatsch just announced that there will be eight levels of play today. After every two 75-minute level there will be a break, with a dinner break after level 6 which should be around 8 pm local time. Play is done around midnight. As you might expect, tomorrow on Day 1b it's the same thing all over again. Last but not least, Lamatsch emphasized that it's English only at the tables today.

The low grey skies outside the Casino Barrière are threatening rain and the high winds are buffeting the crying seagulls. A perfect day to be inside playing poker but, as is often the case, not everyone has made it to the tables for the start at the event and some players are left waiting for the action to begin.
Mathew Frankland was one who was sat at a table with just one other player who asked the floor when play would start. The floor explained that the minimum required was three but with all tables having sold at least four seats already and in most cases five it wouldn’t be long before action got underway.
Moments later two players sat down and Frankland abandoned his game of Pineapple on his phone to dive straight into the action. The under-the-gun player opened for 250 and Frankland popped it up to 750. The blinds folded and it was heads up to a flop of .
Both players checked to see the turn card fall the . A check from the initial raiser prompted a bet of 850 from Franklnad and he took down the first pot.

Ian Simpson raised to 300 from under the gun and found calls from the players in the cutoff, small blind, and Anthony Michel Cruz in the big blind. All four players took a flop of and there were two checks back to Simpson. He continued out for 750 and the cutoff let it go. The small blind folded as well and Cruz tossed out a call.
This left the duo heads up to see the on fourth street. Cruz checked for a second time, prompting Simpson to riffle through his chips. After a moment, he reached into his stack and continued the aggression with a bet of 1,700. Cruz quickly called.
The river was the and Cruz tapped the table one final time. Simpson bet 4,000 and Cruz went deep into the tank. Roughly three minutes passed while Cruz pondered his action. Ultimately, he opted to kick his cards to the muck and Simpson was awarded the pot.

As it goes in the early levels of a deep stacked tournament, most pots aren't getting all that big. We just saw someone run top full house into quads, and even that hand didn't totally get out of hand as the pot was "only" 10,000.
Just now Robert Auer opened for 200 under the gun on his 6-handed table. The player in the cutoff three bet to 650 and just Auer called. Both players checked the entire board of and Auer announced he played the board before revealing . Auer's opponent tabled and took it down.
