The road to PokerStars European Poker Tour glory always has plenty of twists and turns, and the record-breaking 2023 EPT €5,300 Prague Main Event was no exception.

Jon Kyte, who had led the tournament from Day 3, entered the finale with 229 big blinds and a historic chip lead, one that was assumed to be unassailable. Padraig O'Neill had other ideas and was unexpectedly awarded the final EPT Trophy of the 2023 season after overcoming the Norwegian in heads-up play.

Known affectionately as "Smidge" in the Irish poker community, O'Neill came into the day as the shortest stack and turned his 12 big blinds into a €1,030,000 payout. With the victory, he became Ireland's second-ever EPT Main Event champion, 11 years after Steve O'Dwyer reigned supreme in Monte Carlo.

Grafton Wins a Small Multi-Way Pot

Sam Grafton opened to 5,000 under the gun. Steve O'Dwyer called from middle position and Viacheslav Buldygin defended out of the big blind.

The flop of 10♠6♦3♦ got checked to O'Dwyer and he bet 5,000. Both Buldygin and Grafton called.

All three players checked the 3♣ turn, bringing the A♣ on the river. Buldygin opted to check again, while Grafton fired a bet of 16,000. This led to folds from both O'Dwyer and Buldygin, allowing Grafton to scoop the pot.

Viacheslav Buldygin raised to 4,500 from under the gun. Yauheni Tsiareshchanka moved all in for 500 in the cutoff, with Teun Mulder and Pavel Plesuv calling in the blinds.

The flop was 10♥8♦5♣ and it checked to Buldygin who continued for 6,000. Plesuv was the only caller and the turn was the 6♦. Plesuv bet out for 8,000 and Buldygin raised in position to 35,000.

Plesuv called and the 3♥ completed the board. Plesuv checked and Buldygin used a time bank before betting 175,000. Plesuv folded and Buldygin tabled 8♥8♠ for a flopped set. Tsiareshchanka's K♥7♣ was exposed and he was eliminated.

The action was picked up on the turn with the board reading 7♦4♥4♣Q♥ and with around 100,000 in the pot. Yauheni Tsiareshchanka bet 35,000 from the big blind and Markkos Ladev called from the cutoff.

The 3♣ landed on the river and Tsiareshchanka bet 94,000, leaving himself just 500 behind. Ladev used one of his time extensions before flicking in the call.

Tsiareshchanka flipped over ace-high with A♣K♦. Ladev showed 7♣6♣ for a pair of sevens on the flop and dragged in the pot.
