Marle Spragg and Niall Farrell Chase History on Day 5 of the EPT Prague Main Event

Marle Spragg
Marle Spragg

At the start of the tournament, when the wintery wonderland that is Prague saw a record-setting field of 1,285 players descend on the Czech capital for the PokerStars European Poker Tour Main Event, making the final table seemed only like a distant dream. But for the 16 players who have made it to Day 5, it suddenly seems like a reality.

Norway’s Jon Kyte leads the way when action resumes at noon local time inside the Hilton Prague. Kyte went on an incredible run at the end of yesterday’s action, spiking a three-outer on the river to double up then winning two massive coin flips to accumulate a stack of 6,515,000. He leads his closest challenger, Russia’s Grigorii Rodin (4,025,000), by just shy of 2,500,000. Cheng Zhao of China (3,740,000) and two Frenchmen, Serge Chechin (2,980,000) and Vincent Meli (2,920,000), give the top five an international flavor.

Two players left in the field are not only chasing the EPT trophy and €1,030,000 top prize but also a place in the EPT record books. Niall Farrell, champion of EPT Malta in 2015, would become only the fourth player with multiple EPT titles. He enters Day 5 in seventh place with 2,695,000.

Marle Spragg, the popular poker content creator and better half of PokerStars Team Pro Benjamin Spragg, finds herself just inside the top 10 with 2,080,000. Just 15 opponents separate her from joining the small list of women to win an EPT Main Event that currently has only four other names on it.

Other notables still in the hunt include Padraig O’Neill (2,700,000), Dejan Jakovljevic (2,285,000), Preben Stokkan (1,185,000), Max Neugebauer (1,090,000), and Govert Metaal (930,000). Adam Wagner (1,930,000) and Jiri Kocab (1,325,000) are the only two left flying the flag for the local Czech contingent.

The action resumes with just over three minutes remaining on Level 25 with blinds of 20,000/40,000 with a 40,000 big blind ante. The blinds then increase to 25,000/50,000. The 16 players have already locked up €42,320, with a final table appearance guaranteeing €123,600. The plan for today is to play down to the final six players who then return tomorrow to determine a champion. All the action will be streamed by PokerStars TV on a 30-minute delay with commentary from James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton.

Stay tuned throughout the day as PokerNews provides all the live updates as this record field plays down to a final table.

Cheng Zhao opened the action with pocket queens and raised from early position, but he received no action as the rest of the table folded.

The hand after, Vincent Meli opened to 80,000 with AK from early position before Serge Chechin made it 250,000 with 87 from the button. Meli four-bet to 650,000, and Chechin called.

On the Q103 flop, Meli checked, and Chechin fired out 295,000 with his eight-high. Meli called.

The Q turn paired the board, and Meli checked once more. Chechin sized up to 540,000 and folded out the better hand.

Niall Farrell Eliminated in 16th Place (€42,320)

Nível 26 : Blinds 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante

Padraig O'Neill raised to 100,000 in early position before Jon Kyte three-bet to 320,000 in middle position. Niall Farrell then four-bet to 675,000 in the hijack.

O'Neill folded, but Kyte moved all in and Farrell quickly called for 2,100,000.

Niall Farrell: QQ
Jon Kyte: AK

"I always have the pair against ace-king. Finally time for ace-king to win," Kyte said heading to the 378 flop, which kept Farrell in the lead. The turn, though, was the K and Kyte made top pair to move in front.

Farrell watched helplessly as the 4 completed the board and sealed his elimination in 16th place.

"So annoying," he said as he got up from his seat.

"You're the flip king," tablemate Dejan Jakovljevic told Kyte as the chip leader stacked up nearly 10,000,000.

O’Neill Makes the Right Call

Nível 26 : Blinds 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Padraig O'Neill
Padraig O'Neill

Padraig O'Neill opened to 100,000 from the hijack and was three-bet to 280,000 by Dejan Jakovljevic on the button. Action folded back around to O’Neill, who called.

O’Neill check-called a 160,000 bet from Jakovljevic on the 633 flop and a 380,000 barrel from Jakovljevic on the 7 turn.

The 2 completed the board and and O’Neill checked once more. Jakovljevic wasn’t done, however, and after using up two time extensions he fired 650,000 into the middle.

O’Neill counted out calling chips and used up a few time extensions himself as he pondered his decision. Eventually, he slid calling chips into the middle, which was met with an immediate muck from Jakovljevic.

O’Neill declined to show and he collected the large pot while Jakovljevic fell under a million in chips.

Max Neugebauer raised to 100,000 in the cutoff before Jon Kyte moved all in from the small blind. Dejan Jakovljevic tanked for a moment in the big blind before calling for his last 850,000, while Neugebauer also called for around 800,000.

Max Neugebauer: AK
Dejan Jakovljevic: 99
Jon Kyte: K5

"I f**ked up," Kyte said after Neugebauer called. The flop came 2K7, giving Kyte and Neugebauer top pair but Neugebauer remained in front with his ace-kicker.

The turn was the K and both players improved to trips. "See? Cooler, trips against trips," Kyte joked with Neugebauer. "I'll take a deuce. I'm not greedy," Kyte added.

The day belongs to Kyte, however, as the 5 spiked on the river to give him a full house and send both players to the rail.

"Don't film me any more. It's ridiculous," Kyte said, hiding his face as both Jakovljevic and Neugebauer were sent to the rail. Neugebauer took 15th, while Jakovljevic finished 14th with the bigger stack.

Umberto Ruggeri
Umberto Ruggeri

Umberto Ruggeri opened from the cutoff to 100,000 with 88 and called when Grigorii Rodin three-bet to 275,000 from the button with 107.

Ruggeri made a set on the A82 flop and check-called for 150,00. The 6 turn gave Rodin a gutshot and fired out another 325,000 after Ruggeri checked. The latter just called again.

The 4 completed the board, and Ruggeri continued to slow play his set and checked. Rodin moved all in for Ruggeri's last 1,110,000 and the Italian snap-called for a double up.

Five-Way Limped Pot???

Govert Metaal

Serge Chechin limped in with 99. Grigorii Rodin and Govert Metaal did the same with 54 and J8 from the hijack and button. Marle Spragg also called from the small blind with A2 and Preben Stokkan checked his option with 94.

Metaal made trips on the 884 flop. The blinds checked and Chechin bet 125,000. Rodin and Metaal called before Spragg and Stokkan folded.

The 3 turn gave Rodin a huge combo draw but kept Metaal ahead. Chechin put another 150,000 into the pot. Rodin made it 300,000, and Metaal jammed for his last 630,000. Chechin called after using a time bank and Rodin also called.

The Q river then checked through to showdown and Metaal bagged a huge triple up.

Segre Chechin moved all in for 725,000 from under the gun before Marle Spragg rejammed from the small blind after using a time bank. Preben Stokkan folded in the big blind. The cards went on their backs after the outer table finished the hand that they were on.

Serge Chechin: 109
Marle Spragg: AQ

The Q103 flop gave both players a pair, but Chechin was then drawing dead after the Q turn. The 3 river completed the runout and Chechin exited in 13th place.

Mark Helou: KQ
Adam Wagner: A4

Both players hit a pair on the AQ3 flop, but Wagner was ahead with his aces. The J turn gave Helou additional outs with a straight draw, while he spiked the K on the river to make two pair and double up.
