Brazil's Leonardo Pires Leads the 195 Day 2 Survivors

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Leonardo Pires
Leonardo Pires

Thanks to the 25 players that took advantage of the late registration period, the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $5,300 Main Event officially attracted 928 entries, which created a $4,500,800 prize pool that will be distributed to the top 135 players. Whoever finishes as the last player standing will walk away with a cool $833,260, along with the title and coveted trophy.

The man best positioned to make a run at the title is Brazil's Leonardo Pires, who finished the Day 2 as chip leader with 524,000. Others who bagged big among the 195 survivors were Franco Spitale (432,300), Sampson Simmons (421,400), Phillip McAllister (420,600), Ami Barer (353,000), and Steve O'Dwyer (430,900), who was less than 24 hours removed from winning the $50,000 Single-Day High Roller.

Day 2 saw nearly 600 players return to action, but over the course of five 90-minute levels hundreds would hit the rail including actress Sasha Barrese, Mustapha Kanit, Bryn Kenney, Dan Colman, Isaac Haxton, Ole Schemion, Ryan Riess, Chris Moorman, Joe McKeehen, and Team PokerStars' Andre Akkari, Daniel Negreanu, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Jaime Staples, and Chris Moneymaker.

Regarding Moneymaker, the 2003 World Series of Poker Champ fell in Level 10 (500/1,000/100) when Thomas Muehloecker put Moneymaker all in on the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} board. Moneymaker called with the {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}, but it was no good against the {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} that Muehloecker held for two pair and Moneymaker was eliminated.

Another player to exit, albeit it in an unprecedented manner, was Antonio Esfandiari. He was disqualified due to a "breach of etiquette" at the table.

Late on Day 2, Esfandiari admitted to urinating in an undercover container while in the tournament, a decision tied to a prop bet with Bill Perkins that required him to lunge everywhere he went for 48 hours. He said that all of the lunging made it extremely painful to move, but believed he took things too far and that it was a lack of judgement on his behalf. At the time of the disqualification, Esfandiari had about 100,000 in chips.

Among those who survived the night were Jonathan Jaffe (255,400), John Racener (192,200), Kevin MacPhee (182,400), Toby Lewis (160,400), Calvin Anderson (153,900), Fedor Holz (114,500), and Benjamin Pollak (65,900).

Day 3 is set to kick off at 12 p.m. local time on Monday where the remaining players will play five more 90-minute levels. As always the PokerNews Live Reporting team will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then. In the meantime, check out this video on Esfandiari's crazy prop bet:

What a Flop for Cal

Greece's Panagiotis Pantazis opened for 3,500 from the cutoff and action folded to Calvin Anderson in the big blind. He opted to three-bet to 8,300, and Pantazis thought for a bit before four-betting all in for what looked to be 60,000. Anderson snap-called.

Pantazis: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Anderson: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

It was a flip, but not when the {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop smacked Anderson right in the face by giving him Broadway! The {K-Hearts} turn left Pantazis looking for an ace on the river just to chop, but it wasn't in the cards as the {K-Diamonds} paired the board.

An Orbit w/ Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari has been having a rough go of it today, but not on the felt.

"They're shot," Esfandiari told us when we asked how his legs are doing. That's because he's in a 48-hour bet with his friend Bill Perkins. We're not sure what's on the line, but we do know that when Esfandiari is in the PCA area, which includes the long hallways and massive tournament room, he can only move by lunging. Anyone who spends some time in the gym will tell you it's a good workout.

"I'm not sure I could do it for a million at this point," Esfandiari told James Calderaro, who was seated to his left. Esfandiari then expressed legitimate concern that his legs would give out, something he hoped to combat by getting a massage.

Just before the break, we decided to spend an orbit watching Table 7, which saw Esfandiari begin with approximately 120,000 in chips.

Hand #1 (Small Blind): Adrianus Weel raised to 2,700 from the cutoff, Esfandiari folded, and Calderaro called from the big blind to see a {7-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Hearts} flop, which both players checked. Action repeated itself on the {J-Hearts} turn, and then Calderaro fired out 5,000 on the {5-Hearts} river. Weel folded.

Hand #2 (Button): Talal Shakerchi took a seat at the table, but was dealt out of this hand. Jean-Baptiste Desvignes opened for 2,700 from middle position, Esfandiari folded, and Michel Fardel called from the big blind to see a flop of {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. The two players checked and then did the same on both the {2-Spades} turn and {8-Clubs} river. Fardel showed the {4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}, which was bested by the {a-Hearts}{q-Spades} of Desvignes.

Hand #3 (Cutoff): Esfandiari raised to 2,600 and took down the pot.

Hand #4 (Hijack): Shakerchi raised to 2,600 from middle position, Esfandiari folded, and Desvignes called from the button. Desvignes check-called a bet of 3,200 on the {2-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop, and then checked the {5-Spades} turn. Shakerchi bet 5,600, Desvignes check-raised to 14,900, and Shakerchi folded.

Hand #5 (Middle Position): Shakerchi raised to 3,000, Esfandiari folded, and Christian Campan called from the button. Weel came along from the big blind and three players saw a flop of {6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. Weel checked, Shakerchi continued for 6,000, and Campan quickly called. Weel folded, the dealer burned and turned the {9-Spades}, and Campan called a bet of 11,600. When the {8-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Shakerchi moved all in and Campan folded.

Hand #6 (Middle Position): Shakerchi raised to 2,500, Esfandiari folded, and Michel Fardel called from the hijack. Thomas Hueber came along from the big blind and three players saw a flop of {2-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. Hueber checked, Shakerchi bet 3,800, and only Fardel called to see the {4-Diamonds} turn. Both players checked, the {q-Hearts} completed the board on the river, and Shakerchi check-folded to a bet of 12,000.

Hand #7 (Under the Gun): Esfandiari raised to 3,700 and took down the pot.

Hand #8 (Big Blind): Desvignes opened for 2,700 from the hijack and Esfandiari defended the big blind. Esfandiari then checked the {6-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop, Desvignes bet 2,500, and Esfandiari check-raised to 6,300. Desvignes called and then action went check-check on the {5-Hearts} turn. When the {K-Hearts} completed the board on the river, Esfandiari checked and then folded when Desvignes bet 5,500.

Esfandiari wasn't overly active during the orbit, but Shakerchi certainly made the most of it.

2013 WSOP Main Event Champ Hits the Rail

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

We saw Ryan Riess taking the long walk of loneliness down the hall (though to be fair he was with his girlfriend), and he confirmed that he'd just been eliminated from the Main Event.

As he told it, Fedor Holz had raised from the cutoff and Riess called from the button with {a-}{10-}. Both players checked the {k-}{j-}{j-} flop, and then Holz bet when a {10-} appeared on the turn. Riess called, a {9-} completed the board on the river, and Holz bet again.

Riess responded by moving all in, and Holz hit the tank for over a minute before calling with {q-}{7-} for a straight. That hand left Riess crippled, and Holz finished him off shortly thereafter.

"Bluffed it off," Riess concluded.

Toby Lewis Leads Almost 600 Players Into Day 2

Toby Lewis
Toby Lewis

Welcome back for Day 2 of the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $5,300 Main Event. After two opening flights, nearly 600 players will return for play today, and it is Toby Lewis atop them all with 188,000 in chips. With registration open until the start of Day 2, official field size and prize pool numbers will be posted shortly after play begins, but it looks like over 900 total entries and nearly $4.5 million in the purse for this one.

Coming in behind Lewis on the leaderboard and rounding out the top five stacks are Alexandr Komarov (168,200), Jonathan Jaffe (164,000), Randy Kritzer (161,500), and Boyuan Qu (149,800).

Other notables returning for Day 2 are Kathy Lehne, who is ranked as one of the richest women in the world, according to Forbes, Andrey Zaichenko, who took out international football legend Ronaldo on Day 1a, and Team PokerStars Pro members Chris Moneymaker, Daniel Negreanu, and Jason Mercier. Of this group, Lehne has the most chips to start Day 2 with 130,100.

After eight 60-minute levels were played on Day 1a and 1b, the players will be happy to get an additional 30 minutes per level on Day 2. The plan for the day is to play five 90-minute levels, with no dinner break and the end of the day coming at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time. There will be a 15-minute break after every level.

As is for everyday in this event except for the last one, the cards will be in the air at 12 p.m. local time. Be sure to keep your eyes fixated right here to PokerNews.com for continued coverage of the 2016 PCA Main Event as the field moves further along in the quest.
