Johns Leads Stacked Field in $25,000 High Roller

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Dustin Johns
Dustin Johns

The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 High Roller is always one of the biggest and most stacked events of the year, and this year is no different.

After Day 1, American Dustin Johns led the way with 298,100 in chips, followed by World Poker Tour champions Jared Jaffee and Olivier Busquet. The first day of this event drew a total of 214 entries, with late registration open until the start of Day 2.

Busquet, who also won the €50,000 Super High Roller at EPT Barcelona for €896,434 in 2014 after beating his good friend Daniel Colman heads up, had a stellar day and bagged up 257,400 while he's in preparation for a six-figure MMA match with JC Alvarado.

Two-time WSOP bracelet winner Brian Yoon bagged up 294,000 after having held the chip lead for most of the day. Yoon knocked out Georgios Sotiropoulos with queens to ace-king, and that put him at the top.

Faraz Jaka, who finished third in the PCA Main Event in 2012, finished on 254,900, while two-time WPT winner Marvin Rettenmaier will take 190,100 to Day 2.

Former NFL star, seven-time Pro Bowler, and three-time Super Bowl champion Richard Seymour played on Day 1 as well, but after busting in the last level he had to reenter. Seymour had support from current Houston Texans player, and former New England Patriots teammate, Vince Wilfork, who came to check on his friend numerous times. Seymour survived the day and will come back tomorrow to chase after a spot at the final table.

During the day, Sarah Herring called the clock Seymour in the following video:

Among the shorter stacks that will be coming into Day 2, you've got EPT Grand Final champions Adrian Mateos with 58,000 and Steve O'Dwyer with 47,600, plus Team PokerStars Pro members Andre Akkari (59,100) and Jason Mercier (81,800).

Play will resume on Wednesday at 12 p.m. local time and another 10 levels will be played. PokerNews.com will be right there with you for all the live updates, chip counts, and photos, so be sure to stay tuned.

Red-Hot Gorodetsky Sends Volpe to the Rail

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Paul Volpe
Paul Volpe

We saw Paul Volpe collecting his things and exiting the tournament area. A quick check with his former table confirmed that he'd just been eliminated at the hands of Robert Gorodetsky, who is sitting with a mountain of chips.

According to Gorodetsky, Volpe had shoved for his last 25,000 of so holding {q-}{10-} and he called with {a-}{10-}. The board ran out clean and Volpe hit the rail.

Gorodetsky then explained "the big one," which he had won a short time earlier. As he told it, he held pocket tens when he and another player, who held {a-}{k-}, saw a flop of {q-}{10-}{5-}. His opponent bet, Gorodetsky called, and a {J-} peeled off on the turn.

His opponent bet 45,000 holding Broadway, Gorodetsky called, and a second {Q-} paired the board on the river. The player with the straight moved all in for a good chunk of change, and Gorodetsky, who barely had him covered, snap-called with tens full of queens.

Winter Sends Seymour to the Locker Room

Nível 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Richard Seymour
Richard Seymour

As Charlie Carrel told it, former Super Bowl champ Richard Seymour shoved over an opening raise, only to have Sean Winter shove over that and isolate him. The opener folded.

Seymour: {5-}{5-}
Winter: {a-}{k-}

Seymour was racing, but Winter got the better of him with a king on the flop.

The other players at the table said it was Seymour's first bullet and he was talking about reentering, so he may yet make a return.

Soshnikov Dispatches Reigning World Series of Poker Main Event Champ

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Joe McKeehen
Joe McKeehen

Joe McKeehen limped the button and Jared Jaffee did the same from the small blind. Ivan Soshnikov then raised to 4,200 from the big, McKeehen three-bet all in for 22,300, and Jaffe folded. Soshnikov made the call and the cards were turned up.

Soshnikov: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
McKeehen: {a-Spades}{4-Hearts}

It was a bad spot for McKeehen, and his best bet was to catch an ace. The {9-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Hearts} flop was far from it, and the {5-Spades} turn didn't do him any favors. McKeehen needed an ace and an ace only on the river to stay alive, but it wasn't in the cards as the {J-Spades} paired the board.

One of Brazil's Best Hits the Rail

Nível 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
André Akkari
André Akkari

We're not sure how Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari got so short, but we do know he got his last 1,550 all in preflop and was at risk against Russia's Alexandr Komarov.

Komarov: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Akkari: {9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Akkari was drawing to two live cards, and he managed to pair one on the {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades} flop. Unfortunately for him, his lead was short lived when the {A-Diamonds} spiked on the turn to give Komarov aces. The {10-Diamonds} river changed nothing, and Akkari fell just shy of the dinner break.

Meanwhile, former champ Will Molson busted to Brian Yoon at a nearby table.

Alvarado's Attempt at Sabotaging Busquet Strict Diet

Nível 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Olivier Busquet
Olivier Busquet

The $150,000 MMA fight is still quite some time away between JC Alvarado and Olivier Busquet, but the former just made an attempt at hijacking the latter's dietary restraints.

Alvarado called yours truly over, explaining he had ordered a beer and chips for Busquet, who was sitting one table over. The players at Alvarado's table got a good chuckle out of the joke even before his Tuesday night snack was delivered.

When the waitress arrived with the beer and chips, Alvarado explained where it had to be delivered, and the friendly waitress followed the instructions.

"Here you go sir," the waitress said to a dumbfounded Busquet.

Confused, Busquet said, "I didn't order that," but the waitress placed the bag of chips on the rail while handing him the beer and a plastic cup.

"It's a gift," the smiling waitress said.

"From who?" Busquet asked, as Alvarado and the players at his table could not stop laughing.

Ole Schemion, facing Busquet, and seeing Alvarado's laughter in the background as he was in his direct line of sight, laughed out loud as he immediately understood what was going on.

"From that gentleman," the waitress pointed at Alvarado, and Busquet now started laughing as well.

"It's a joke," Busquet tried to explain to the waitress, "And I don't want it."

As the waitress left, Busquet put the bag of chips and the beer under his seat, and with a big smile on his face he continued playing.

Asked when he had last had a beer and chips, Busquet said, "Oh man, I really can't remember. It must've been a long-long time ago."

"Clean living," Busquet added with a smile, "I break my diet sometimes for something I really, really want, but not for some barbecue chips and a beer."

When we inquired whether or not Busquet could be tempted with any food to break his strict diet, he said, "Well, if it was New York cheesecake or some Sour Patch Kids, then it would've been a different story."

Alvarado's first attempt at sabotaging Busquet preparations did not go according to plan, but knowing that cheesecake or candy could do the trick he might be sending over some boxes to the Busquet residence.

An NFL Star Among Poker Pros

Nível 1 : 100/200, 25 ante
Richard Seymour
Richard Seymour

It's hard to miss a man that measures 6 ft 6 and well over 300 pounds in a poker tournament room filled with normal mortals, as former NFL star Richard Seymour can't be missed in today's $25k High Roller.

Seymour's accomplishments on the field are stellar, having made the Pro Bowl seven times and wining the Super Bowl three times with the New England Patriots.

The defensive tackle, who was picked sixth in the 2001 NFL draft, played the latter years of his career for the Oakland Raiders where he became, at the time, the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. Seymour signed a two-year contract extension worth $30 million dollars in 2011, and he retired at the end of his contract.

Seymour's no stranger to the green felt, as he played the Main Event at the PCA this year, and he's managed to cash in two WPT events in the last two years. Today he'll be battling it out with the likes of Mike McDonald, Peter Jetten, Charlie Carell and Talal Shakerchi.

Today, while Day 4 of the Main Event plays out on one side of the room, the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 High Roller will kick off on the other.

The tournament, which will be played eight-handed and allow players a single reentry option, features a 50,000 starting stack and 60-minute levels. Day 1 is scheduled to play 10 levels with a 75-minute dinner break at the end of Level 6, which means play will conclude at approximately midnight local time.

Among those expected to play are Steve O'Dwyer, who won the $50,000 Single-Day High Roller a couple days back; Bryn Kenney, who kicked off the 2016 PCA by winning the $100,000 Super High Roller; 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Joe McKeehen; and Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst, and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, just to name a few.

Last year, Ilkin Garibli topped a field of 269 entries to win this tournament for $1,105,040 after a heads-up deal with Joe Kuether. Other past winners of the title include Jake Schindler (2014 - $1,192,624), Vanessa Selbst (2013 - $1,424,420), Leonid Bilokur (2012 - $1,134,930), Will Molson (2011 - $1,072,850), William Reynolds (2010 - $579,240), and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (2009 - $433,500).

Who will join the prestigious list of winners? The three-day journey to determining that answer begins today.

Cards will be in the air at Noon local time, which is just a couple of hours from now. Stay tuned as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team brings you all the action straight from the floor of the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas!
