In 90 minutes from now at 12.30 p.m. local time, Day 2 of the 2016 PokerStars EPT12 Dublin €25,750 High Roller Event gets underway at the Royal Dublin Society. So far, the tournament has attracted a total of 56 players and 10 of them took advantage of the single reentry to create a field of 66 entries. Throughout the first eight levels, this number was whittled down to 41 hopefuls, but the field size may still increase with registration open until 15 minutes prior to the start of Day 2.
Leading the field is Anton Bertilsson with staggering 1,375,000 in chips and the Swede is no stranger on the European Poker Tour, having finished second to Stephen Graner in the EPT11 Prague Main Event. Furthermore, Bertilsson was one of five players that won their entry through a €3,000 Satellite the previous day. Nick Petrangelo (888,000) and Kim Wittendorff (852,000) complete the overnight podium whereas many other well known names of the international poker circuit also made it through to Day 2.
Other big stacks include Dario Sammartino (733,000), Timothy Adams (729,000), Triple Crown Winner Davidi Kitai (696,000) and Mike Watson (673,000) to just name a few. The only remaining Team PokerStars Pro is Jason Mercier (555,000) whereas Andre Akkari busted late on Day 1. Steve O'Dwyer won't be returning to the tables today either after busting on both bullets yesterday.
Action resumes with level nine at blinds 3,000-6,000 and a running ante of 1,000, giving new additions to the field more than 40 big blinds to play with. A maximum of 10 levels of 60 minutes each will be played or until the final table of the last eight is reached, whichever of the two comes first. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to cover the action, so make sure to tune back in regularly.
In the last hand of the level Fernando Brito jammed all in for 73,000 from middle position. Chance Kornuth in the small blind made the call, but he folded to Max Silver's three-bet to 180,000 from the big blind.
Fernando Brito:
Max Silver:
The board ran out and despite hitting top pair on the river, the pot went to Silver with the turned straight. Brito out, down to 29 players.
Niall Farrell opened to 26,000 from under the gun and Charlie Carrel then shoved for what looked like 300,000 from one seat over. Farrell made the call and it was a coin flip for the tournament life of the EPT12 Malta Main Event champion.
Farrell:
Carrel:
The flop saw Carrel improve to a pair of aces while Farrell had some outs on the turn. "Come on, straight flush!" Mustapha Kanit joked, but the river was a blank. Carrel shook hands with Farrel and wished him a nice time in the pub before then remarking to Kanit "I just wanted to see you and firaldo battle" based on the previous banter on their table.
Charlie Carrel raised to 50,000 from the cutoff and Anton Bertilsson three-bet to 120,000 from one seat over. Mike McDonald then squeezed all in for what looked like 270,000 out of the small blind with Carrel folding and Bertilsson calling.
McDonald:
Bertilsson:
The board ran out and the Canadian headed to the rail while Bertilsson once again generated a small gap at the top of the counts.
Shortly after the redraw Anton Bertilsson raised to 48,000 from the cutoff and Christoph Vogelsang raised all-in from the button for his last 482,000. Bertilsson made the call
Bertilsson:
Vogelsang:
Vogelsang was in need of help but the gave him nothing and he was eliminated. Bertilsson is now approaching Keith Johnson with a stack of over two million
With the blinds having just gone up, Anton Bertilsson in the hijack made it 60,000 to go. On the button, Ivan Luca made the call before action got to big blind Mustapha Kanit. The Italian high roller squeezed to 215,000 with 1,324,000 behind.
Bertilsson thought about it for just a bit before shoving all in for almost 1.9 million. Luca didn't need much time making up his mind and folded just about right away. Kanit needed some more time though and sighed long and hard.
He eventually tossed in some 1,000 chips to call, though he wasn't overly excited doing so. When he saw the showdown, that all changed:
Mustapha Kanit:
Anton Bertilsson:
The board ran out and Bertilsson parted ways with a lot of chips. Kanit, still with a straight face, counted out his 1,539,000 stack and raked in the biggest pot of the tournament.
Ivan Luca limped under the gun and right next to him Timothy Adams shoved all in for 381,000. Action folded to Anton Bertilsson in the small blind and he called all in for 338,000. The big blind and Luca both folded.
Timothy Adams:
Anton Bertilsson:
Adams was in good position to double up, but the community cards resulted in a different outcome: .
Adams was left with 43,000 and moved in under the gun the next hand. His neighbor Mustapha Kanit raised to 70,000 total and big blind Ivan Luca made the call. Luca then check folded to Kanit's 70,000 continuation bet on and the small side pot was already Kanit's.
Mustapha Kanit:
Timothy Adams:
After the hit the turn, Adams was already drawing dead and he gathered his belongings. The on the river was a blank and Adams made his exit in 15th place.
Action folded to Belgian three time bracelet winner Davidi Kitai in the small blind and he open jammed for his last 275,000. In the big blind, Nick Petrangelo found a hand he could call with.
The tournament was stuck on 14 players for quite some time, but just now three players busted in rapid fashion. Kim Wittendorff was the latest casualty.
Under the gun Kim Wittendorff raised and action folded to Anton Bertilsson in the big blind. Bertilsson clashed in a big pot with Mustapha Kanit not too long ago, but by now was recovered to the point where he had Wittendorff covered again. Bertilsson shoved all in and Wittendorff snap called.
Kim Wittendorff:
Anton Bertilsson:
Wittendorff had the dominating ace-king, but would end up short. The board ran out and the Dane made his exit while Bertilsson was back to the point he was at before clashing with Kanit.
