Fisher Leads After Day 2 of PCA

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Walter Fisher got a big stack early and held his lead.
Walter Fisher got a big stack early and held his lead.

After two Day 1 flights, the remaining players in the 2015 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event all sat down in the same room for Day 2, with over 500 players to start the day. Following five 90-minute levels, Walter Fisher emerged as the leader when he bagged 497,000 in chips. Fisher holds a slight lead over Hugh Drummond (456,800) and Juan Martin Pastor (446,000).

Fisher, an amateur player, said most of his poker consists of playing cash games in Los Angeles. He came to the PCA with a trio of recognizable names (Bill Perkins, Jeff Gross, and Sorel Mizzi), and said he had the good fortune to hit a few sets against fellow big stacks holding aces. Despite his excellent early position, Fisher is taking the long view.

"I'm trying to get rest and keep myself nice and calm because it's only Day 2 and there's so many days," Fisher said. "I've seen so many of my friends go through it with monster stacks and end up being massively upset because they punted away their chips."

As for Drummond, he won a monster pot late in the day when Sebastian Von Toperczer shoved over his 47,000 reraise for about 150,000 during Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300), the last of the night. Drummond snapped it off with {a-}{a-}, and his bullets held up against Von Toperczer's {q-}{q-}.

Surviving were 175 players to advance to Sunday's Day 3. Other notables to advance included Pratyush Buddiga (357,900), Jim Collopy (342,000), Daniel Negreanu (295,600), Liv Boeree (247,100), Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (212,400), Ole Schemion (192,600), Olivier Busquet (190,700), Mike Leah (185,400), retired Brazilian footballer Ronaldo (146,300), former World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel (77,700), and Jason Mercier (49,000).

One player who failed to make it through was defending champion Dominik Panka. Last year, the Polish player defeated Mike McDonald heads up to capture the title and more than $1.4 million in prize money. Panka fell at some point during Level 10.

Faraz Jaka, Jacob Bazeley, Vanessa Selbst, pro golfer Sergio Garcia, David "Bakes" Baker, Jake Cody, Tony Gregg, Dan Kelly, 2003 Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker, Shaun Deeb, Randy "nanonoko" Lew, former PCA winner Harrison Gimbel, and 2014 WSOP Player of the Year George Danzer were also among those eliminated during the course of play.

Gregg had a big stack for much of the day, but found himself short during the last level of the night. Following a flop of {6-Spades}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, the man many refer to as "End Boss" was all in for about 22,000 with the {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} against the {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} held by German superstar Ole Schemion. Despite Gregg flopping a full house, Schemion caught the {J-Spades} turn to take the lead and further improved to quads with the {J-Diamonds} river to deliver a painful end to Gregg's tournament.

Play will resume at noon local time on Sunday for Day 3, and PokerNews will continue to provide live coverage. Meanwhile, check out the latest episode of Ivey Stories.

Interview: Day 1a Chip Leader Alex Millar

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Alex Millar
Alex Millar

For Alex "Kanu7" Millar, the PCA Main Event might be the only live tournament on his schedule in 2015.

He's doing everything he can to make it count.

Millar, a high-stakes cash game player and member of Team PokerStars Online, finished Day 1a of this event as the chip leader. The 29-year-old pro from the U.K. is typically found playing the nosebleed games on PokerStars and rarely travels to play live tournaments, but he made the trip to PokerStars' flagship festival to play the Main Event and meet up with some of his Team Online cohorts.

Millar isn't having quite the same success here on Day 2, seeing his stack dwindle down to around 60,000, but he hasn't slowed his aggression whatsoever. We recently saw him shove all in on the final hand before the break to induce a fold against an amateur and increase his stack back to 95,000.

We spoke with Millar about his rare appearance in a live tournament and the transition he's forced to make from his usual seat behind a computer screen.

PokerNews: We just saw you play a pretty intense hand to the river against a qualifier who got into this tournament for virtually pennies. Normally you're playing the highest stakes online against the best players in the world. Talk about coming here and playing in a live tournament setting against amateur players.

Millar: It's a pretty different experience, I'll say that. When I'm playing online obviously I have reads against everyone I'm playing against because I play against the same players, whereas here coming into the day I didn't know anything about anybody. It's a pretty different style required to do well.

You mentioned reads online; do you try to pick up live tells here even though you don't play live poker a lot?

Yeah, sure. I'm probably not very good at it (laughs). Obviously if someone plays live all the time they'll be much better at it. Now and again I'll pick up something but it's not my strong point.

As a cash game player, how do approach coming into a tournament like this?

I just sort of show up and play my game. I generally know what I'm doing playing poker so I just turn up and take every hand as it comes, make the best decisions I can — same as I would online.

What would it mean for you to ship this tournament?

It would be nice. The prize pool's pretty big. But in terms of the credit that goes with it, that's not a huge motivation for me. The achievements in my career are beating $25/50 online and beating certain players heads-up. So to get lucky in a five-day tournament would not be ranking against my greatest achievements but it would rank amongst my biggest money won. It would be really nice but it's not something I go out and try to achieve.

Bullets For Silver

Max Silver (Day 1)
Max Silver (Day 1)

With an already sizable pot built in the middle, Max Silver and Ilkin Garibli were heads up on a board of {9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Silver cut out a fourth street bet of 18,500 and Garibli thought for a moment before moving out a call.

Fifth street was the {3-Hearts} and Silver took his time before reaching for chips. He opted to slide a stack of 32,600 into the center of the table. Garibli went into the tank, pondering his action against Silver. After about 90 second, Garibli dropped forward a call.

Silver confidently tabled {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} for a flopped set of aces. Garibli flung his cards at the muck and Silver was pushed the pot. He now has roughly 175,000 to his name.

We didn't see the action, but the dealer was counting down Bernardo Coelho's stack for a double against Ole Schemion. Coelho had flopped a set with {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} on the {q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{a-Spades}{6-Hearts} board, while Schemion had {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} in front of him for a weaker boat. The German crusher was forced to send 75,100 to his opponent.

Jake Cody (Day 1) - Eliminated

Alexander Venovski opened to 2,300 only to have Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody three-bet all in from the next seat over for about 15,000. Action folded back to Venovski and he instantly called.

Venovski: {A-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Coyd: {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}

A run out of {A-Spades}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} ensured Cody would be eliminated from play. Venovski scooped the pot and now has a stack of about 153,000.

Faraz Jaka
Faraz Jaka

Ami Alibay raised from early position, Faraz Jaka called in the hijack and the flop came down {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

Alibay continued, Jaka called and the {J-Clubs} turn was checked by both players. The {J-Diamonds} river completed the board and Alibay bet effectively 23,000-ish. Jaka went into the tank for about two and a half minutes before he called all in.

Alibay tabled {Q-Hearts}{J-Spades} for queens full of jacks, Jaka mucked and Alibay collected the pot.

After Jaka left, tablemate Isaac Haxton commented that all-in hands must be shown and the dealer turned over Jaka's hand, which was {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}.
