The Great Debate -- Does Asking "Check" Constitute a Check

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Chris Hunichen
Chris Hunichen

A small hand just took place between Khorshid Sakhra and Chris Hunichen that called into question what constitutes a check. Let's start from the beginning.

Sakhra opened for 4,600 from late position and Hunichen defended from the big blind. Both players checked the {5-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop, and then Hunichen bet 4,200 on the {2-Hearts} turn. Sakhra made the call and then Hunichen announced a check on the {Q-Diamonds} river.

"Check?" Sakhra asked in a tone that indicated a question. The dealer, who took it as such, replied in the affirmative. "Did he check?" Sakhra asked again just to be clear. The dealer reiterated that Hunichen had in fact checked.

However, with "check" being the first word out of Sakhra's mouth, Hunichen assumed that he had checked and nearly tabled his hand.

"Did you check?" Hunichen asked Sakhra, who stated that he did not. He then placed put a minimum bet of 2,000. "We may need to get a floor over here," Hunichen stated.

It was his belief, based upon prior experiences, that regardless of tone, Sakhra said the word check, so it needed to stand as such. The dealer explained that it was a question, but Hunichen, who understood that fact, was adamant it didn't matter.

A floor person was called, who listened to the situation and agreed with the dealer, stating the 2,000 bet would stand. Hunichen was not satisfied.

Tournament Director Toby Stone was then called over. He first listened to Hunichen's version of events, and then turned his attention to the dealer. After taking everything into consideration, Stone ruled that "in fairness of the game" the bet would stand.

"It's a terrible ruling," Hunichen blatantly quipped. Nonetheless, it was the ruling and action was on him.

By this point several players at the table were visibly frustrated, and before long one of them called the clock. The original floor person, who hadn't left the table, began the one-minute countdown, and Hunichen let every single second tick off before his hand was declared dead.

Just for kickers, Sakhra showed the {Q-Spades}.

Hof Runs out of Chips

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Natalie Hof
Natalie Hof

Natalie Hof moved all in for her last 18,000 chips with pocket sevens and Jesper Feddersen reshoved from the small blind with pocket queens. The board ran out king-high without hit for either player and Hof had to take her belongings.

Small Pot for Piotrowski

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Przemyslaw Piotrowski has spent the entire day thus far and just played a small pot against Christoph Vogelsang and one further player. On the {2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop, Vogelsang checked in the big blind, the third player in the hand checked as well and Piotrowski bet 7,000. Only Vogelsang called and they then checked down the {K-Clubs} turn and {2-Clubs} river.

Vogelsang showed the {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for a busted gutshot and Piotrowski took down the pot with the {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}.

Other notables on the table include Davidi Kitai and Gaelle Baumann.

Serafimov Busts to Husson

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Ivan Luca raised to 4,000 and Pierre Husson just called before Sergey Serafimov moved all in from the big blind. Luca folded but Husson called with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. Serafimov was at risk with {A-}{7-} and failed to improve on a board {8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{A-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

Kuiper Loses to Yoon

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Brian Yoon opened to 4,500 from early position and right next to him sat Kuiper making it 13,400. Action folded back around to Yoon and he called.

Yoon check called a bet of 14,900 on {9-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Clubs} and both players checked the {5-Diamonds} on the turn. The {6-Clubs} completed the board and Yoon bet out 45,500. Kuiper called, but mucked his cards upon being shown {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} by Yoon.

Fang Busts to Morozovs

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Giada Fang
Giada Fang

Down to only 32,000 chips, Giada Fang of the PokerStars Team Online moved all in from under the gun with the {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and Mihails Morozovs called with {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} in the big blind. The flop {8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} gave Morozovs a flush draw while the {8-Diamonds} turn changed nothing whatsoever. The {A-Spades} river provided one of the two over cards and that sent Fang to the rail.

Manji Takes a Shot at Charalambous

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Portugal's Ayan Manji raised to 4,000 from early position and the UK's Peter Charalambous three-bet jammed for 28,600 from the cutoff. The button and blinds folded, and Manji hit the tank for several minutes before making the call.

Manji: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Charalambous: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

It was a flip, but the proverbial coin did not come down in Manji's favor as the board ran out a dry [qc9h3h6h4]. Ship the double to Charalambous.

Kenney Rides Again

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Bryn Kenney
Bryn Kenney

Bryn Kenney comes back from the break with a massive stack and a huge smile on his face.

He's been on a wicked roller coaster ride that saw him dip to 22,000 in the first level, jump back up around 180,000 a few levels later before losing half of that in some set-over-set nightmare that would send some reeling.

Not Kenney though, he responded by winning every pot he played after that and now sits on close to 250,000.

"What a Flop For Me Huh?"

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

We caught the action on the turn as two players checked to Metaal on the button. With {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{A-Spades}{2-Clubs} displaying Metaal fired 3,300. Just Dominik Nitsche in the small blind called, the big blind folded. Nitsche check called another 13,500 on the {6-Hearts} river. Metaal showed {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Nitsche mucked.

"What a flop for me huh?" Metaal laughed. "Yeah" Nitsche said with a wry smile.
