Adrian Mateos Leads After Day 1 of the EPT12 Malta High Roller Event

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Adrian Mateos leads the field into Day 2
Adrian Mateos leads the field into Day 2

The first of three tournament days in the €10,300 High Roller Event of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Season 12 stop in Malta attracted 164 unique players, 37 of which took advantage of the single reentry option throughout the ten 60-minute levels of play. Once the chips were bagged, just 99 of them remained with EPT11 Grand Final champion Adrian Mateos leading with a stack of 330,400 chips.

The Spaniard is followed by PokerStars Team Pro Jason Mercier with 257,300 and EPT regular Ihar Soika (252,000), as well as German three-time bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche (231,900). Other notables with above average stacks include David "MissOracle" Yan (200,400), former November Niner Felix Stephensen (197,600), Mukul Pahuja (189,500), Goran "mandza17" Mandic (184,800) and EPT8 Prague champion Martin Finger (179,000), who has also won two EPT High Roller titles in the past.

A plethora of other notables made it through to Day 2 including PokerStars Team Online member Isaac Haxton (143,000), who finished fourth in the €10,000 Single-Day High Roller two days ago, and the PokerStars Team Pros Ivan Demidov (103,200) and Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier (61,400). Their teammates Jake Cody, Andre Akkari, Theo Jorgensen, Luca Pagano and Liv Boeree were less fortunate and busted before the end of level ten.

Other casualties included €10,000 Single-Day High Roller Steve O'Dwyer, who called the shove of Hossein Ensan with {10-}{8-} for third pair only to end up second best to a rivered pair of kings by the German, who held the {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Anton Wigg, Remi Castaignon, Ben Wilinofsky, Fabrice Soulier, Mike McDonald, Scott Seiver, Dimitar Danchev and Mustapha Kanit all fell on Day 1 as well.

Two spectacular hands highlighted the first day. In the first, Carlos Chadha flopped a set of sevens and Corey Hochman open-shoved his flush draw with Anatoly Filatov coming along and then jamming the turn. The other key hand of the day saw Mercier eliminate Mohsin Charania and Michael Ho at the same time to push for the overall lead.

Just under 100 players, 99 to be exact, will be returning to the tables of the Casino Portomaso at 12:30 local time on Friday. Registration and the single reentry option remain open until 15 minutes prior to the start. Day 2 recommences with blinds of 1,000/2,000/300, so all new entries would join the action with 25 big blinds. The redraw will become available once the registration is closed, and the plan is to play a maximum of ten 60-minute levels or until the last eight players remain, whichever comes first.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be there to provide all key hands, so make sure to tune in then. The penultimate day of the poker festival in Malta will also determine the six finalists of the €5,300 Main Event as well. A look at the 16 remaining hopefuls can be found here.

Ensan Busts O'Dwyer

Steve O'Dwyer

Steve O'Dwyer raised and then called the three-bet of Hossein Ensan from one seat over in the small blind to see a flop of {9-}{2-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Both players checked and a {8-} appeared on the turn to make Ensan bet. O'Dwyer called and Ensan shoved the {K-} river just like he did not long ago against Scott Seiver.

O'Dwyer called off with the {10-}{8-} for third pair and the {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs} of Ensan scored another knockout.

Mercier Busts Charania and Ho; Takes Lead

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

After a raise to 1,600 by Denis Timofeev and the call by Michael Ho, Jason Mercier three-bet to 6,500 out of the small blind. Mohsin Charania then moved all in from the big blind for his last 9,500. Since it was not a full raise, all remaining players were only allowed to call, a fact Mercier had confirmed by floor staff.

On the {8-Spades}{J-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop, Mercier continued for 17,000 and both Timofeev and Ho called.

Mercier then splashed in his stack of T-5,000 chips after the {K-Clubs} turn to put the two remaining opponents all in. Timofeev folded, but Ho called for his last 25,000.

Ho: {A-Spades}{7-Spades}
Charania: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Mercier: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

The {6-Diamonds} river was a blank and Mercier busted two players at once to take the overall lead.

Massive Hand Sends Chadha Into The Lead

Nível 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Anatoly Filatov
Anatoly Filatov

It all started rather innocent with a raise to 1,350 by Carlos Chadha from under the gun and four players making the call. On the flop {K-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} is where things started to blow up. Corey Hochman somehow got his stack of 35,550 in via open-shove and Anatoly Filatov quickly called from the small blind. Carlos Chadha gave it some thought as well and then called, too. The {2-Hearts} fell on the turn and Filatov moved all in within a matter of seconds.

Chadha was sent into the think tank, talked through possible hand combinations. Eventually, Chris Hunichen called the time on him and the floorman came over to start the countdown of one minute. With five seconds left, Chadha slid forward his stack of what appeared to be 65,000 as well and it created a massive pot.

Chadha: {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Hochman: {5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Filatov: {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

Two flush draws against middle set were a more than juicy combination and the {5-Clubs} river sent the entire pot to Chadha, busting Hochman as a result and sending Filatov back below starting stack.

Kiletto's Stack Melted

Nível 1 : 100/200, 25 ante
Lily Kiletto
Lily Kiletto

Arriving at the table on the turn {8-Spades}{J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} with around 13,800 chips in the pot, Lily Kiletto bet 11,000 and Sergey Sergeev moved all in for 43,150. "So this is your first hand and you try to get it in?" Kiletto said. Some table talk followed and Sergeev "admitted" that he is afraid to play against women, which made Ben Wilinofsky and JC Alvarado chuckle.

Ultimately, Kiletto was trying to make up her mind and said "I don't believe you have queen-ten, I think you have ace-ten, the {A-Spades}{10-Spades}." Kiletto called about one minute later and sure enough Sergeey turned over the {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for the straight. Kiletto was not drawing dead yet with {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, but the {6-Clubs} river was a blank and Kiletto was left with 325 chips only.

Those vanished shortly after, making her the first casualty of the tournament in level one.

The €10,000 + €300 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller Starts Now!

Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

The third and final High Roller event on the EPT Malta schedule kicks off at 12:30 p.m. local time today.

The €10,000 + €300 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller will play eight-handed with 60-minute levels and players starting with 50,000 in chips.

It is a three-day event and today they will attempt to get through the first 10 levels with a 20-minute break after each two and a 75-minute dinner break scheduled for the end of sixth.

A single re-entry is permitted and registration will remain open until 15-minutes before the start of Day 2 at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Of course, a bevvy of poker superstars are expected to turn up for this one, including Steve O'Dwyer, who just took over the top spot on the EPT all-time money winner's list with a win in the €10,200 Single-Day High Roller here in Malta just the other day.

Canadian Mike McDonald is now second on that list after he shipped the €25,750 High Roller at the front end of the Malta festival, and although he is still in contention for the Main Event title, should things go awry there, he's expected to turn up here.

Jason Wheeler and Byron Kaverman are both coming off final table appearances in the first two High Roller events as well, so it's a good bet they'll be here joining a host of well known rounders.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand for all the action from start to finish, so keep it locked right here for complete coverage of the EPT12 Malta €10,000 + €300 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller.
