The Penultimate Day Starts at 12

Just 15 players remain in the 2015 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final Main Event, all eying that first place prize of just over one million euros. That largest of cheques won't be handed out today though, but a ticket to still fight for the big money can be earned today.

The goal is to play down to 6 players, or five full 90-minute levels. A final table at the European Poker Tour consists of 8 players, but play will most likely continue even if the final table is reached, just to make sure the final day won't take too long. Last years final took till 9 in the morning, something the organization has tried to prevent from happening again ever since.

There's still some 40 minutes left in level 23 (10,000/20,000 with a 3,000 ante). PokerStars Team Pro Johnny Lodden starts out as the chip leader with 115 big blinds. His neighbor on his left is Ole Schemion with 59 big blinds.

Both of them have impressive records. Lodden has cashed 5 out of the 7 EPT Grand Final's he played, and finished third here two years ago for the biggest score of his live tournament career (€467,000).

Ole Schemion was the EPT Season 10 player of the year, has had multiple million dollar scores, and is arguably the best tournament poker player in the world at the moment.

We imagine that table being picked as the feature table today, so get ready for some action! PokerNews will be your one stop shop today, with all the big hands, interviews and photos from the Main Event and the €25,000 High Roller.

Beast Mode for Ole Schemion Right Out of the Gate

Nível 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

Well, that escalated quickly!

On the first hand of the day, Koichi Nozaki raised to 42,000 from under the gun before play folded to Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden on the button. He made the call, then Ole Schemion called from the small blind before the three players went to the flop.

The flop was {Q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}, and Schemion checked. Nozaki bet 83,000, Lodden called, and Schemion called to keep all three players in action.

The turn was the {10-Clubs}, and Schemion opted to lead with a bet of 212,000. Nozaki slid forward the chips to make the call, then action fell on the Norwegian. Lodden took his time before firing in a raise to 600,000, verbally announcing the amount to the dealer. Schemion counted his stack with his left hand firmly over his mouth, then reraised all in for 1.05 million.

Nozaki quickly asked for a count, to which Schemion pushed all of his chips forward so the dealer could break them down. The shove amount of 1.05 million was confirmed, and Nozaki went into the tank. He eventually looked back at his cards one last time before sliding them to the muck, then Lodden made the call.

Schemion tabled the {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a queen-high straight, and Lodden had the {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for a set of eights. With one card to come, Schemion had the lead.

Needing to fade a queen, ten, eight, or five on the river, Schemion did just that when the lowly {2-Clubs} hit on fifth street, and he doubled into the chip lead with 2.78 million. Lodden was knocked back to 1.115 million.

Tom Hall Eliminated in 15th Place (€58,100)

Nível 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Tom Hall
Tom Hall

Tom Hall came into the day with around ten big blinds, and had already moved all-in twice today, but got no callers. This time however the Brit moved all-in from the small blind and got called from Dmitry Ivanov in the big blind.

Hall: {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Ivanov: {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}

The dealer dealt the flop of {9-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} which was no help to Hall.

"I'm gonna stand up, put my bag on, and get the seven on the river," Hall said as the {2-Diamonds} was dealt on the turn.

But the seven didn't come as the {3-Diamonds} came on the river, giving both players two pair, with Ivanov having the better kicker.

Tom Hall was eliminated in 15th place earning him €58,100.

Anton Astapau Eliminated in 14th Place (€58,100)

After being crippled, Anton Astapau shoved all in from the under the gun position and his raise got through, everyone folded. Right the next hand, he wouldn't be so lucky.

Action folded to Adrian Mateos, who inquired about the stack size of Astapau in the big blind. The Spanish WSOP Europe champion opened to 40,000, and instantly called Astapau's big blind shoved.

Anton Astapau: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Adrian Mateos: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}

The flop came {Q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs}, opening the possibility of a chopped pot. The {A-Clubs} on the turn wasn't the card Astapau was looking for; "Not the best card in the world."

The {7-Hearts} completed the board and Astapau got up from the table, and shook hands with his former table mates. Astapau received €58,100 for his efforts, the remaining 13 players are now guaranteed €66,500.

Christopher Frank Eliminated in 12th Place (€66,500), Juan Martin Pastor Eliminated in 11th Place (€78,400)

Juan Martin Pastor gets sucked out on for his elimination

Dmitry Ivanov raised under the gun to 52,000 and his neighbor Juan Martin Pastor three-bet to 115,000 with 380,000 behind. Adrian Mateos cold four-bet to 250,000 and Hady El Asmar in the small blind tanked for some before folding.

Christopher Frank in the big blind didn't need time though, he peeked at his cards and instantly shoved all in for 407,000.

Ivanov quickly folded, and Pastor shoved over the top all in for 495,000 total. Mateos now had the decision, and needed some time. He did the math, and eventually said "I have to call"

Juan Martin Pastor: {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}
Christopher Frank: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Adrian Mateos: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}

It was a massive pot, and the players weren't hiding how excited and nervous they were. Christopher Frank walked around, Pastor nervously got up from the table, only to sit down again for a bit, and Mateos knew he had slim chances of winning, but also knew he was committed and meekly saw what was going to happen.

Hady El Asmar, in the meantime, repeatedly told he had folded jacks, though Frank wasn't really interested in the hand of his neighbor.

The flop came {4-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}, about as full of blanks as they could come. The turn was anything but a blank though, helping Mateos in front to scoop it all: {Q-Hearts}.

Frank needed a king, Pastor needed an ace, and they were almost losing it at this point, while Mateos was holding his breath.

The {7-Diamonds} completed the board and Frank just walked to the pay-out desk. Juan Martin Pastor wasn't ready for that part yet though, he was just about to break down it seemed. The biggest bad beat of his poker career just happened, and he wasn't prepared for it. He did recover not much later, and thanked all the players that supported him via twitter:

Juan Martín PastorNo me resta mas que decirles GRACIAS a todos por el apoyo que recibí, son lo mejor.

El Asmar was still happy about his fold, but it was Mateos who was the happiest of them all. He started stacking and built a castle worth 2,712,000 in chips.

Lyndon Basha

After Hady El Asmar had made it 55,000 from the button, Lyndon Basha re-raised to 193,000 from the small blind. El Asmar thought about it for a short while before making the call.

On the flop of {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} Lyndon Basha checked, and Asmar slid out a roughly pot-sized bet. Basha then announced he was all-in and El Asmar made the insta-call, flicking a single chip into the middle.

Basha: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
El Asmar: {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}

"Nice hand," said Basha, "Picked the wrong time."

The {5-Spades} on the turn did gave him outs to a straight. "Two," he said to his fiancee on the rail, "Four outs."

But the river wasn't one of them, as the {5-Hearts} gave El Asmar a full house to eliminate Lyndon Basha in 10th. The remaining nine players are guaranteed €95,300.

Dmitry Ivanov

Dmitry Ivanov moved all-in under the gun for 335,000. Action was folded around to Adrian Mateos who asked for a count before calling from mid-position. Hady El Asmar thought about calling from the small blind before electing to fold. Schemion got out of the way and left the two players up against eachother.

Ivanov: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Mateos: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}

Ivanov was behind and at risk, and needed a five to remain in the competition. The flop was {7-Spades}{9-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}, and it looked like Ivanov was set to bubble the official final table. The {J-Clubs} was no good for Ivanov, and the {8-Diamonds} on the river sealed his fate.

The remaining eight players have made the official final table, and are guaranteed a 6-figure pay day. Eight place pays €120,700.

Hand #8: Koichi Nozaki open-shoved for 19 big blinds under the gun. Action folded round to Schemion in the big blind who called.

Ole Schemion: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Nozaki: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Schemion took a while deliberating his decision but was ahead, putting Nozaki at risk. The flop was {5-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Clubs}. On the turn, the {8-Spades} changed nothing, with Nozaki needing an ace to stay alive. But it was the {9-Clubs} on the river and Nozaki was eliminated in 8th place (€120,700).

Markus Ross Eliminated in 7th Place (€174,300)

Nível 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Markus Ross
Markus Ross

Hand #69: Mateos opened the cutoff with a raise to 100,000 and would soon find a whole lot of action behind him.

Small blind Markus Ross had big plans for this hand, as he shoved his stack worth 1,380,000 (27 big blinds) to the middle. Big blind Muhyedine Fares glanced over, didn't even ask how much it was, and called. Mateos knew enough and quickly folded.

Markus Ross: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Muhyedine Fares: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

Ross was in trouble, and he knew it. The {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} flop was one which brought some reason for hope. "Heart or queen. Running hearts." Ross said, "Jack of hearts would be good" he added.

The {8-Spades} on the turn wasn't anything Ross needed, and he was down to just the two remaining queens in the deck to stay alive.

It wasn't happening. The river was the {J-Hearts} Ross had asked the Poker Gods for on the turn. Now it was too late, and it meant four things;

  • Markus Ross was eliminated in 7th place (€174,300);
  • Muhyedine Fares was now the chip leader with 5,235,000 in chips;
  • The remaining six players were guaranteed €233,500;
  • The day was done and the bagging and tagging started for the remaining six players.
