Schemion Leads As 114 Players Advance to Day 3; €1,082,000 Up Top

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

After Day 2 of the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final €10,600 Main Event there are 114 players left. A total of 310 players started today, including those from both Days 1a and 1b and the nine players who registered before the start of play on Day 2 such as Daniel Negreanu, Dzmitry Urbanovich, Max Altergott and Igor Kurganov. Phil Ivey was rumored to play on Day 2, but failed to materialize.

The total number of 564 players in the Main Event this year is down 650 from last year when Antonio Buonanno took home the title, but there's still a nice prize pool of €5,640,000 to be had. A total of 79 players will be paid, with a min-cash worth €19,175 whilst first place is a shade over a million Euros at €1,082,000.

The chip leader is German High Roller and GPI Player of the Year Ole Schemion with 477,700, narrowly beating his compatriot Christopher Frank who is in second place with 465,200. Schemion bust his good friend Igor Kurganov late on Day 2 as his {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} beat Kurganov's {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} on a board reading {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}.

He also sniffed out a bluff from Artem Metalidi earlier in the day. On a flop of {A-Hearts}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, Metalidi bet 4,000 and Schemion called. Check-check on the {5-Spades} turn, and the {K-Clubs} completed the board on the river. Metalidi shoved all in for 13,300, and Schemion called fairly fast. Metalidi flipped over {j-}{2-} for bottom pair, and Schemion showed {K-Spades}{q-Hearts} to take the pot.

Several big names fell early including Pokerstars Team Pros Joao Nunes, Liv Boeree, Fatima Moreira De Melo, Jake Cody, and the aforementioned Daniel Negreanu.

After registering late at the start of Day 2, "Kid Poker" ended up busting to Belarusian high roller Anton Astapau. On a {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop, Negreanu bet out 3,700 and Astapau called. Negreanu bet another 7,200 on the {J-Spades} turn and again Astapau called. The {A-Clubs} completed the board and Negreanu checked with about 26,500 behind. Astapau announced all in verbally, and slid a stack of 5,000 chips forward.

"Oh no! Anything but that card!" Negreanu exclaimed. "Or maybe you're bluffing; missed flush draw, missed straight draw." Negreanu wasn't so sure of what to do just yet; "I'm gonna need a minute on this guys."

Negreanu leaned over and asked, "You bluff right? Russians bluff right? Good spot to. Or you might have ace eight of diamonds. You wouldn't go all in with that right? Or maybe you would!"

Astapau didn't reply at all, and just sat there motionless while Negreanu tried to make up his mind. All of a sudden Negreanu tossed in some chips to indicate the call. Astapau quickly showed his {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} for a turned set.

"Oh! Nice, you win," Negreanu said with a smile, "I had kings."

Negreanu showed his {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and made his way to the exit. Joining him over the next few levels were Martin Jacobson, Jean-Noel Thorel, and Patrick Bruel, just to name a few.

Despite several big names busting, a whole host of notables made it through to Day 3 including Pokerstars Team Pros Vanessa Selbst (285,000), Isaac Haxton (221,300), Jason Mercier (296,400), Andre Akkari (146,900), Johnny Lodden (109,000), and Eugene Katchalov (71,200). Joining them are players like Dario Sammartino (255,300), who finished fourth in the €100,000 Super High Roller; Mustapha Kanit (146,500), who is fresh off winning the €50,000 Super High Roller last night; and 2014 World Series of Poker runner-up Felix Stephensen (90,000).

These players are part of the remaining 121 who will return tomorrow at Noon local time to play five 90-minute levels. The money bubble is scheduled to burst so be sure to check back tomorrow as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team tracks every bust out and double up.

In the meantime, check out this video featuring the EPT Season 12 announcement:

Selbst Eliminates Price

Vanessa Selbst raised from the small blind, and rival Oliver Price made it 22,000 in the big blind. Selbst responded by shoving all in, putting Price at risk for about 80,000. The British player went deep into the tank, thinking for around four minutes before the clock was called. More than halfway through the countdown, he called.

Selbst: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Price: {a-Spades}{6-Spades}

A community of {j-Hearts}{3-Spades}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts} left Price penniless and Selbst with one of the bigger stacks in the tournament.

Popov Eliminates McDonald

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Mike McDonald opened to 3,200 and saw Thomas Popov repop it to about 10,000 on his left. McDonald stared Popov down and then told the dealer he was all in, which was a wager of around 50,000. Popov was very eager to call and turned over {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. He was way ahead of McDonald's {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, and the tournament legend found himself dead on the turn as the board rolled out {j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts}.

Reigning World Series of Poker Main Event Champ Falls

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

Martin Jacobson is no stranger to the EPT, but last year he made himself known to the entire poker world by winning the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event for $10 million. Jacobson is still in his reign as champ, and he was in action here on Day 2 hoping to add an EPT title to his résumé. Unfortunately for him, those hopes just came crashing down.

Jacobson had been nursing a short stack most of the afternoon and was recently relocated to Table 18. In what was either his first or second hand, Jacobson open-shoved for 22,000 from the hijack and Nikolay Komcharokov called from the small blind.

Jacobson: {a-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Komcharokov: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}

Jacobson got it in good, but he fell behind when the flop came down {10-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{4-Spades}. Neither the {4-Diamonds} turn nor {J-Clubs} river helped the Swede, and just like that the field lost one of its most accomplished players.

Season 12 of the European Poker Tour Announced

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Season 11 of the European Poker Tour is coming to an end this week, but the excitement is already building for Season 12, which was announced on Monday at the 2015 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final.

"Right from the stunning EPT100 celebrations in Barcelona last August to the 11th EPT Grand Final here in Monaco, this has truly been a spectacular season, so we are understandably very excited about the forthcoming Season 12," EPT President Edgar Stuchly said. "In Europe-based events alone we will have awarded more than €100 million in prize money for the first time in the EPT's history, with more than 60,000 tournament entries."

Six stops have been announced for Season 12, with a seventh in March to be determined. The schedule will include Barcelona, Malta, Prague, PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, Dublin, and Monte Carlo. For those looking to mark their calendars of the dates of these stops, check out the following table.

Since Season 1, Barcelona has been a staple on the tour and always provides a festival of massive proportions. With consistent record-breaking performances and a joint venture with the Estrellas Poker Tour, the "City of Counts" will be highly anticipated once again.

The biggest buzz surrounding the schedule announcement seems to be the tour's return to Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. This destination was a stop on Season 4 of the tour and falls into the time period of when EPT Deauville was previously held — shortly following after the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. According to the press release from the EPT, "Dublin will be held jointly with the UK & Ireland Poker Tour at the historic Royal Dublin Society venue, just minutes away from the heart of Dublin City."

The other four stops — Malta, Prague, PCA, and Monte Carlo (for the Grand Final) — were all featured in Season 11. That's when Malta made its debut on the tour, and the location proved to be a big success with nearly 900 players in the €5,300 Main Event.

"We will continue to take EPT to new locations and new audiences, and are constantly reviewing our events to ensure the tour stays fresh and exciting," Stuchly added. "Our festivals are held in the very best destinations in Europe, and we're really looking forward to continuing to provide the best live poker experience worldwide in Season 12."

Mercier Picks Off Bluff and Busts Dodelande

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Before the last break, Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier raised to 2,000 from early position. Kevin Dodelande made the call from the big blind, and the flop produced the {8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}. Dodelande led out for 2,000, and Mercier raised to 5,600. Dodelande called.

After the {7-Clubs} hit the board on fourth street, Dodelande opted to check. Mercier tossed out a bet of 8,600, and Dodelande called to see the river.

The {A-Clubs} completed the board, and with the pot at 33,800, Dodelande moved all in for 19,700. Mercier wasn't thrilled with his opponent's play and went into the tank. Following some hemming and hawing for a minute, Mercier made the call.

Dodelande shook his head and tabled the {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for a filed bluff, now playing the board. Mercier showed the winner with the {K-Hearts}{K-Spades} and that was good enough to give him the pot. Dodelande was eliminated, and Mercier moved to over 100,000 in chips.

Daniel Negreanu Felted

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Daniel Negreanu - €100,000 Super High Roller
Daniel Negreanu - €100,000 Super High Roller

Daniel Negreanu opened the action with a raise to 1,800 from middle position and the player in the hijack made the call. Belarusian high roller Anton Astapau on the button made the call as well, and the small blind came along to see a flop also.

With {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} on the flop, the small blind checked and Negreanu bet 3,700. Just Astapau called, both other players folded.

"Or maybe you're bluffing; missed flush draw, missed straight draw." Negreanu wasn't so sure of what to do just yet; "I'm gonna need a minute on this guys." Negreanu leaned over and asked "You bluff right? Russians bluff right? Good spot to. Or you might have ace eight of diamonds" Negreanu said, "You wouldn't go all in with that right? Or maybe you would!"

Astapau didn't reply at all, and just sat there motionless while Negreanu tried to make up his mind. Then, earlier than we expected, Negreanu all of the sudden tossed in some chips to indicate the call.

Astapau quickly showed his {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} for a turned set.

"Oh! Nice, you win" Negreanu said with a smile, "I had kings."

Negreanu showed his {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and made his way to the exit, "And that's that" Negreanu said with a smile while walking past Isaac Haxton. Astapau has about 140,000.

Welcome to Day 2 of EPT 11 Grand Final Main Event

Jose Carlos Garcia remains in the lead heading into Day 2.
Jose Carlos Garcia remains in the lead heading into Day 2.

After two starting days, things are just getting going at European Poker Tour Grand Final Main Event here in Monte Carlo. The early maneuverings have seen 299 of the 556 registered players advance from the two flights, all of whom will be in action on Day 2.

A few players have ran their 30,000 starting stacks up significantly through eight levels of play. Jose Carlos Garcia has made the biggest surge, ending Day 1a with 182,800. Those closely trailing him near the top of the counts include Joao Simao (179,100), Nicolas Chouity (168,200), Day 1b leader Romain Paon (161,900), and Steven Zhou (158,000). Other notables toting sizable stacks include last year's November Niner Felix Stephensen (143,000), Mustapha Kanit (138,800), German superstar Ole Schemion (121,600), Andre Akkari (114,900), Steve O'Dwyer (109,000), Eugene Katchalov (95,600), Faraz Jaka (90,400), and David Peters (90,200).

Kanit bagged up on Day 1a and put his day off on Sunday to good use: the Italian took down the €50,000 one-day Super High Roller for €936,500, topping a field of 66 entrants and a final table that included stars such as Scott Seiver, Fabian Quoss, Fedor Holz, Martin Finger, and Mike "SirWatts" Watson, whom Kanit defeated heads up.

Cards are scheduled to begin flying again noon local time, and registration will remain open until the first card leaves a dealer's hand, so be on the lookout for some last-minute entries from players who have been focusing on high roller tournaments and cash games. Those players will get almost 40 big blinds as Level 9 (400/800/100) begins. The plan for Day 2 is to play six levels, each lasting 75 minutes. Twenty-minute breaks will be given every two levels, with things scheduled to wrap up around 8 p.m. Stay tuned to see who grabs pole position in this stretch of the race for the EPT Grand Final Main Event championship.
