Peters Takes One With River Bet

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

David Peters opened to 525 in middle position and got a call from an opponent in the hijack. The small blind made it 1,625 to go, and Peters called, as did the third player. The small blind bet approximately 3,000 on the {2-Hearts}{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and only Peters continued. The small blind check-called 5,300 on the {j-Hearts} turn, and he checked the {q-Diamonds} river. Peters bet 7,700, about a third of the pot, but that was enough to convince his opponent to fold.

Another Set for Barer

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Ami Barer and Ismael Bojang checked from the blinds on a board of {j-Spades}{3-Spades}{k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}, and a player under the gun bet 3,750. Barer called, and Bojang tanked a couple of minutes before releasing his hand. Check-check on the {a-Spades} river, and Barer showed {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for another set to take the pot

"I win, of course," Bojang said with a smile.

"Of course," Barer replied, grinning back.

Big Double for Selbst; Enter Boeree

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

We picked up the action with approximately 15,000 already in the pot and a board reading {3-Spades}{a-Spades}{q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst had moved all in for roughly 17,500 from the small blind, and action was on Italian pro Giacomo Fundaro in the cutoff.

As Fundaro debated what to do, a new player took a seat to Selbst's direct right. That player was none other than her fellow Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree, who had opted to late register the tournament.

Eventually Fundaro made the call, but mucked just as soon as Selbst rolled over the {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} for bottom set.

Rapid Reaction: Is Erik Seidel the G.O.A.T.?

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Before the 2015 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final began, one of the things we hyped was that the €100,000 Super High Roller field could be the largest ever. With 71 entries, our prediction was spot on.

One thing we didn't focus on, though, was the chance at a big, superstar winner. The thing is, there was probably somewhere around a 95-percent chance that this event was going to be won by one of poker's biggest names. That, or a talented, new young gun was going to walk away with the title. When the final river card fell, we had the former with Erik Seidel hoisting the trophy, but his win is much more than we hoped for.

In poker, when the term "G.O.A.T." is thrown around (meaning greatest of all time), the list of names is short, often containing the select bunch of Phil Ivey, Chip Reese, and Daniel Negreanu. But, Seidel has shown us time and time again that he deserves to be in the argument as the greatest. Now, with this premier €2 million win, the case has never been stronger.

It's really no secret that this writer considers Ivey the greatest poker player of all time, but I'm starting to have a bit of a change of heart because what Seidel continues to do is nothing short of amazing. He even leapfrogged Ivey (and Daniel Colman) on poker's all-time money list with his latest victory and now ranks third all time.

For argument's sake, if you throw out the World Series of Poker Big One for One Drop, Seidel is poker's top all-time money earner, and Ivey is second. Both have well over $20 million in live tournament earnings, but failed to score a results-inflating payday from the One Drop event.

Side by side, let's see how these two stack up across several important categories:

PlayerTotal $ WonAll-TIme RankTotal CashesOpen WinsBraceletsWSOP CashesWPT Titles$1M+ Scores$1M+ Years
Ivey$22,482,6915th140241056168
Seidel$24,065,9413rd22426890136

As you can see, the two have their fair share of wins in a particular category. While Ivey is widely considered the game's greatest, Seidel has certainly done his part to close the gap.

Looking deeper at those numbers, Ivey has the edge in average earnings per cash result, win percentage when cashing, and WSOP gold bracelets. Seidel has won more all time, both money and open events, has more cashes all time, and he's been doing it for longer. His tournament cashes date back to 1988 versus Ivey's first that came 10 years later in 1998. Over the last 30 years, it is without a doubt that no player has stood the test of time in a more impressive fashion.

Seidel is also a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2010 alongside Dan Harrington. In the years since his induction, Seidel has earned over $13.7 million, or nearly 57 percent of his total live tournament earnings. Ivey has yet to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, but that will likely come in 2016 when he will turn 40 on Feb. 1 to meet the minimum age requirement.

Talking to many players around the tournament circuit, especially those in the game's younger generation, Seidel's no-limit hold'em tournament game ranks better than Ivey's, and that's the format all of the biggest events are played these days.

With this victory, Seidel gave us, the poker media and audience, another piece of evidence that he should be right up there when talking about who is poker's G.O.A.T. At 55 years old, he is poker's elder statesman, and no matter how many new young guns storm onto the scene, he continues to showcase timeless talent and enthusiasm.

Ausmus Pushed Off the Hand

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

With 1,800 in the pot and a board reading {j-Hearts}{9-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, Jeremy Ausmus checked from the small blind and Luxemborg's Mike Neuens bet 1,700 from the hijack. Ausmus then sprung to life with a check-raise to 5,600, Neuens called, and the {2-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

Ausmus bet 8,000, which was about a third of his remaining stack, and Neuens announced that he was all in. Ausmus immediately flicked his cards to the muck.

Up to 268, Closing in on 500

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Registration is open throughout the day and up to the start of play on Day 2 tomorrow, which means the field will continue to grow. As of right now, Day 1b has attracted 276 runners, which means with Day 1a's 219 players the total field currently stands at 495. That should be over 500 before too long.

Soika vs. Thomas

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Ihar Soika opened for 500 under the gun and was met by a three-bet to 1,600 by Russell Thomas in middle position. Action folded back to Soika, and he called to see a flop of {8-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Soika check-called a bet of 1,900, and then checked when the {5-Hearts} appeared on the turn.

Thomas bet again, this time 4,100, and it did the trick as Soika released his hand after about 30 seconds of thought.

A Barer of a Raise

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Ami Barer checked a final board of {4-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{7-Hearts} from the big blind, and his opponent on the button bet 3,300. Barer studied the player for a bit and then dropped in a big raise to 15,000. His opponent reached for chips and called immediately with {a-Spades}{7-Spades}, but trips were no good against Barer's {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, good for a boat.

Be Careful What You Say at the Poker Table

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Just before the break, and interesting hand took place that evidenced just why it's so important to be clear when you speak.

The hand began when France's Franck Kalfon opened for 525 under the gun and Ami Barer called from early position. The player on the button made the call, and then Germany's Alexander Stadler three-bet to 2,100 from the small blind. Kalfon called, as did Barer, and then the button folded to make it three-way action to the {2-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} flop.

All three players checked, and the dealer promptly burned and turned the {Q-Clubs}.

"Four," Stadler said as he gently placed a single blue T5,000 chip on the felt. It was clear that the German intended to bet 4,000, but per the rules — which dictate such an announcement made with a single chip be rounded down to the lowest denomination — the dealer verbally declared it 400. Stadler either did not hear the dealer or opted not to correct him.

At that point, Kalfon tossed in four red T1,000 chips for what he thought was a call of 4,000. When the dealer announced it was a raise to 4,000, Kalfon and a few others at the table were taken aback and quite unhappy. Meanwhile, the other half of the table stated it was the correct decision and that the dealer had indeed said "400."

The floor was eventually called over, and much to Kalfon's dismay, backed up the dealer's declaration. The raise stood, and Barer quickly folded. Stadler, who had intended to make it 4,000 in the first place, just called and then both players checked the {6-Spades} river. Kalfon tabled the {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for a pair of aces, but his kicker was no good as Stadler held the {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}.

The Frenchman bemoaned the situation a bit more, but eventually everyone made their way to the exit for the break with a lesson firmly in mind — be careful what you say at the poker table.

Meanwhile, Philip Andrew Patrick was the last elimination of Level 2.
