Day Leads After Day 1A of the PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Chris Day

This week the European Poker Tour has returned to French shores for the PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville event. The tournament, which was won last year by Frenchman Remi Castaignon, saw 234 players try their luck on Day 1A with eight levels of action being the order of the day.

Chris Day was the chip leader at the end of the day after finishing with 154,100 – precisely a single chip more than Jorma Nuutinen who is in second place with 154,000. Day had tweeted during the early parts of the tournament that he was on a crazy table which seemed to feature six-bet pots and players winning big hands with things like third pair. The British player nearly reached the 200,000 mark having won a 100,000 chip race with queens against ace-king. Although he lost some chips towards the end, so did some of the other big stacks, ensuring Day would be in pole position for Day 2.

With many players arriving during Day 1A, choosing to play online or still in the French Poker Series Main Event or High Roller, the names involved were slightly rarer than those expected for Day 1B. Team PokerStars Pro was represented by Eugene Katchalov and Marcin Horecki, both of whom successfully navigated the stormy, qualifier-filled waters of the first starting day. Team Online was also involved but the French pair of Ronan Monfort and Gabriel Nassif were both knocked out fairly early on in the day.

Fairing slightly better was former EPT winner Anton Wigg, the Swede finished the day with 105,000 after winning some crucial pots including a set over set hand at one point. Wigg was one of the ever-growing community of former EPT winners, all still striving to be the first two-time champion. Those who joined Wigg on Day 2 included EPT Loutraki champion Zimnan Ziyard (88,800) – who found that life was pretty easy when you raise with {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and the flop comes {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}...

Jannick Wrang (74,200), the winner of the sole EPT Campione event, was an early chip leader before dropping back into the pack. He still managed to make Day 2 however. He will be joined by EPT Barcelona winner Kent Lundmark (37,300) Dominik Nitsche, Barny Boatman, Friend of PokerStars Pierre Neuville and finalist here last year Jeffrey Hakim.

Lots of former EPT champions failed to even make this first hurdle, the first French winner of EPT Deauville, Lucien Cohen was one of the earliest players to be eliminated this year. He was met on the rail by David Vamplew, Arnaud Mattern as well as the latest EPT Champion, Dominik Panka who won the PokerStars Carribean Adventure for over $1.4 million less than two weeks ago.

Other players who were eliminated and sent home with a spanked bottom included Fabrice Soulier, Michel Abecassis, John Eames, Niall Farrell, WSOPE Main Event winner Adrian Mateos Diaz and Vitaly Lunkin.

Tomorrow, the field is expected to be much bigger with nearly 200 seats already sold. Numerous Team PokerStars Pros are involved including the home hope Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and the winner here from EPT Season 6, Jake Cody.

The Pokernews Live Reporting Team will be back here once again at 12pm local time for another for the second exciting start day to Season 10's EPT Deauville!

We're now into the last level of the day and Chris Day is the current chip leader. The Brit has 195,000 after winning a 100k pot against an unknown opponent. "There was an open to 1,000, I made it 2,600 to go with queens, the guy to my left (points to empty seat) made it 7,100, I raised to 17,700 and he moved in for 48,000 with ace-king, I called and queens held," he told PokerNews.

Eric Sfez Gets One-Round Penalty

Nível 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
EPT Deauville Tournament Room
EPT Deauville Tournament Room

The flop was reading {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} and Hugo Felix had fired out a bet of 6,000 before Eric Sfez made it 18,200 behind him. Felix made the call to see the {K-Hearts} on the turn.

The Portuguese player now checked and Sfez fired out 18,200 a second time, Felix tanked and then made the call once more with only around 25,000 remaining.

The river was the {2-Clubs} - a seemingly blank card. Felix checked a final time and Sfez thought for a moment and counted out a sizeable clump of 1k and 5k chips that seemingly would be enough to cover Felix. Sfez lifted the stack of the chips and held them in midair and was about to put them on the felt when Felix shouted "Call!"

Instantly, Sfez moved his arm back and the dealer quickly called the floor for a ruling. The tournament director came over, and, having been informed of what occurred, announced to the table that Sfez would still have all his options since he did not put the bet on the table.

Sfez then opted to check behind and Felix quickly left the table, quite distraught at the ruling. The floor staff turned over the latter's hand - it was {K-Spades}{10-Spades} for a turned full house. Sfez held onto his cards while continuing to talk in French to the floor. A second tournament director came across and repeatedly reminded Sfez to either table or muck his hand, as he was now wasting time but Sfez continued to talk. The Frenchman was given a one-round penalty and told if he didn't stop arguing and give up his cards then it would be increased to a two-round penalty.

Finally, Sfez mucked his cards and Felix, who still hadn't returned to the table, was awarded the pot.

Marie Furstoss
Marie Furstoss

The only lady in the tournament today, French PokerStars qualifier Marie Furstoss, has just spilled her last chips.

We didn't witness the hand and thus asked former table mate [Removed:203] what had happened. Mueller told us that someone had raised in front of her and someone called before action was on Furstoss. With about thirty big blinds left she squeezed all in, a move we had seen her make before.

This time she wouldn't get away with it though. The initial raiser had jacks and wasn't about to forfeit those. He made the call and won the battle against Furstoss her ace nine off suit.

No more ladies in the tournament, we expect more ladies on Day 1B.

Nassif Clubbed to Death

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Gabriel Nassif
Gabriel Nassif

Gabriel Nassif was already all-in preflop in a three-way pot against Eric Theissen and John O'Shea when we joined the action on the river of an {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{7-Clubs} board.

O'Shea led out for 10,225 on the end and Theissen quickly made the call.

"Flush," said the Irishman, turning over {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. Theissen flipped {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} for a turned set while Nassif's {K-Spades}{2-Spades} was predictably no good either.

Panka Put Out of his Misery

Dominik Panka
Dominik Panka

EPT10 PCA champion Dominik Panka has just busted out of the PokerStars.fr EPT Main Event, but he was very philosophical about what happened. "Today just wasn't my day," he told PokerNews. "I had lost a couple of big pots and was down to 4,000, I opened with {a-}{q-} and the big blind called. The flop was {a-}{j-}{5-} rainbow, he checked, I c-bet, he raised and I called," he continued. "The turn was the {8-Spades} he set me all-in, I called and he had {j-}{2-}. River {2-}."

Panka told PokerNews that he'll be back tomorrow for a side event. "I maybe made a couple of mistakes earlier, but I'm happy with my play," he added before heading off into Deauville.

Set Over Set

Anton Wigg
Anton Wigg

Just a couple of minutes ago we saw Anton Wigg win a small pot with a mere pair of fives on a board full of broadway cards. Just now he had a hand a lot stronger than just a pair of fives, and luckily for him his opponent had a stronger hand as well.

With already quite some chips in the pot, Wigg bet out 9,800 on a {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{5-Hearts} board. His opponent, American player Sami Zakhary in the blinds, had checked and now called immediately. Wigg showed {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and that gave him all the rights to the pot. Zakhary threw his {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} open into the muck and continued with a much shorter stack.

The Rat is Splat

Nível 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Lucien Cohen
Lucien Cohen

Lucien Cohen finished 28th here last year for €19,000, and won the whole thing in 2011 for €880,000. He won't be going deep this year, he was just eliminated by Frenchman Joel Vanderschelden.

Jose Alastuey opened for 500 from middle position and Lucien Cohen pushed his last 3,400 to the middle. He received a call from Joel Vanderschelden on the button and Alastuey called as well. {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs} on the flop and Alastuey checked to Vanderschelden in the empty side pot. Vanderschelden bet out 6,000 and Alastuey folded.

Cohen had to table his hand and might have still have had a little bit of hope having hit with his {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. He was in a world of pain though as Vanderschelden tabled {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for a flopped set. Cohen needed runner runner something but it was all done after the {5-Spades} hit the turn. To rub some more salt into the wound the river came the {6-Spades} giving Vanderschelden quads.

Lucien Cohen, who we didn't see bringing his iconic plastic rat card protector this year, made his exit. Ian Simpson and Tark Abboud also left the tournament, their registration tickets were on the "busted" table.

Panka Crippled

Dominik Panka occupys himself during hands by reading.

The board was reading {5-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Joseph Carlino checked, Antonio Guerrero fired a bet of 2,600 and Dominik Panka, the newly crowned champion of the PCA, made the call from the button.

Carlino counted out his chips before opting to check-raise all in for 13,450. Guerrero got out of the way and Panka quickly flicked in the call.

Carlino: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Panka: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

Carlino put on his coat and was getting up to leave despite being over 95% favourite. The {10-Hearts} river doubled the Frenchman up to 40,000 while Panka was left with just 10,000. The Pole didn't look too despondent and simply went back to reading his book.
