Huge Double for Max Silver

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Brazil's Joao Simao, who finished fourth in chips on Day 1a, opened for 1,700 from the cutoff only to have Max Silver thee-bet to 4,400 from the button. The blinds folded, and Simao pushed back with a four-bet to 10,800. Silver made the call and the duo saw a flop of {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{5-Spades}.

Simao led out for 8,000, Silver called, and the dealer burned and turned the {6-Diamonds}. This time Simao checked, but he woke up with a check-raise to 18,700 after Silver bet 9,200. Silver called and then watched Simao drop in enough on the {9-Diamonds} river to put him at risk.

Silver had 35,200 remaining and hit the tank for a bit before calling off. He knew it was a wise decision immediately as Simao simply shook his head and showed the {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. Silver tabled the {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for jacks and sixes and a massive double.

With registration open all night up to the start of Day 2 some people got a bit over excited about the prospect of there being need of only two more players to take the final field size to more than 1,000. They came, as the over-exciting PokerStars Blog team report.

Huang No More

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Caicai Huang
Caicai Huang

There's still some female players out in the field but PokerStars qualifier Caicai Huang from the United Kingdom is no more. She just shoved her last 18,300 over the line from the cutoff. Things were looking good for her till the pending action was on Morten Klein from Norway. He thought for a little bit, asked for a count, and eventually made the call from the big blind.

Huang showed {A-Spades}{7-Clubs} but Klein had the better of it with his {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}. Things were looking particularly bad for Huang after the {Q-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop and she was already halfway out the room when the {A-Hearts} hit the turn. The {6-Clubs} was of no importance and Huang was officially eliminated.

Petersen Shoves

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

After a raise to 2,000 from Denis Kashirin it folded to Mickey Petersen on the button and he moved all-in for roughly 21,300. The red all in triangle was placed in front of his stack and it folded back to Kashirin.

For about five seconds he did nothing, he then picked up four blue 5k chips and began tossing them between his hands as he debated the merits of a call. He then slipped off his purple Beats headphones and peered around the dealer - he was the nine seat, Petersen was in the two seat - to get a better look at Petersen. Eventually he folded his hand and Petersen could breathe again.

The Defending Champ Busts

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Ramzi Jelassi
Ramzi Jelassi

Elfad Mammadov opened for 1,800 and was raised by the active Nikov Dobromir Georgiev to 5,200. Sitting in the small blind was former EPT Prague champion Ramzi Jelassi, who had folded to a river bet a few hands before to leave him with a stack of 14,100, and he now moved it all in.

Mammadov took about three minutes to make his decision. He had both stacks covered and perhaps thought Georgiev was at it, but he eventually folded. Georgiev made the call with his {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and was racing the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} of Jelassi. The flop was dealt {q-Clubs}{k-Spades}{j-Clubs} and it was all looking pretty rosy for Jelassi, but the turn {5-Diamonds} shot Georgiev into the lead. No salvation on the river as the {9-Hearts} sealed his fate and there was to be no repeat victory for the Swedish PokerStars player.

Mammadov, who had taken a long time to fold, was asked what he folded? {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} he responded, claiming he was getting the right price. A few other players at the table were not happy about the time he took, one pointing out that there were no TV cameras on him.

Praising the River Check Raise

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

There's something sexy about the river check-raise. Still today you have card rooms in Las Vegas that explicitly mention in the rules on the wall that check-raising is permitted, a relic to the times that check-raising was looked upon as unfriendly and unsportsmanlike. Today it is permitted but you still don't see the move all that often.

With a {6-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{A-Spades} board on the table, Dominik Nitsche had checked to his opponent. Martin Prager bet 3,300 and Nitsche raised it up to 10,500. There it was, the river check raise! Prager made the call but soon tossed his cards into the muck as Nitsche tabled {J-Spades}{8-Spades} for the flush.

There's only one thing more sexy than the river check-raise and that's the triple crown of check-raising; doing it on every street. Add a limp reraise preflop, do it all as a bluff and pull it off, well you might just make it into the PokerNews poker history books.

Volpe Folds to Double Barrell

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

It's been a great year so far for Paul Volpe but he just took a small hit in a pot against Rytis Praninskas. The Lithuanian, who won a live satellite to qualify to this event, raised to 1,600 from under-the-gun, two seats along Andrei Demidov called and Volpe put in the extra from the big blind.

The three of them saw a {5-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop, there then followed a continuation bet of 3,300 from Praninskas and Volpe was the only caller. The {Q-Diamonds} fell on the turn, Praninskas fired again, this time 6,400. Volpe looked him up and down and stared at him for at least 20 seconds, he either got no information or if he did he didn't like it as he pushed his cards over the line and Praninskas took the pot.
