Patel on Top After Day 1a

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Dhru Patel
Dhru Patel

For 10 years, the European Poker Tour has come to the city of London. It is one of only two places to hold an EPT every single year since the tour's inception (the other being Barcelona). This year saw a brand new location for the event which has previously been held at both the Grosvenor Victora on Edgeware Road and also the Hilton Hotel nearby.

With Day 1a set on a Sunday, a smaller field than usual was expected due to many players' love of the Sunday online grind. There are benefits to playing the first of the two starting days, though, as anyone involved today was guaranteed to sit at a nine-handed table (the same guarantee does not apply to Day 1b due to space requirements).

There were 209 runners in total, but at the end of eight levels, it was Dhru Patel who led the 105 survivors with 241,000 in chips. Along with [Removed:17] (who finished with 128,000), he was one of the first players to break through the 100,000 mark with the highlight of his day no doubt being the elimination of poker legend Erik Seidel. Patel played the £50,000 Super High Roller a couple of days ago, busting in 19 minutes. Here in the Main Event, he took the chip lead at the end of the night after knocking out Ben Martin with pocket queens against ace-queen.

Elsewhere, Viktor Blom had a slow start but looked to be picking things up until a huge hand sent him to the rail courtesy of Dan Smith, who finished with 103,800.

Team PokerStars Pros had a mixed day. Joao Nunes was unfortunate enough to last just two hands before he was eliminated, Leo Margets and Johnny Lodden joined him soon after, while Matthias De Meulder, Eugene Katchalov and Jonathan Duhamel were knocked out later on.

Henrique Pinho fared much better and made it through with a solid 79,400, and he will be joined on Day 2 by Jake Cody (65,000), Theo Jorgensen (73,000), Christian de Leon (33,300) and Marcin Horecki (23,600).

Jorgensen in particular had a very tough opening few hours. It was only when he was all in and won a 23,000-chip pot with the {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} against Alexander Schilt's {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} on a {3-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{9-Spades}{Q-Hearts} board that the Dane arrested his decline. He will be joined in Day 2 by a triumvirate of Scandinavian former EPT winners in Ramzi Jelassi (36,800), Michael Tureniec (81,000) and Frederik Jensen (45,900).

Of course, there were still numerous casualties during the day including many who did well at the last London festival, Talal Shakerchi (winner of the EPT9 London High Roller), Sergio Aido (UKIPT London champion), Dan Shak, Sorel Mizzi and former EPT champion Kevin Stani.

Monday's Day 1b is expected to be huge and will feature the winner of the £50,000 Super High Roller, Martin Finger, UKIPT High Roller champion and Team PokerStars Pro, Vanessa Selbst, as well as hundreds of other players all hoping to supplant Ruben Vissen as the new king or queen of London.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be here from 12 p.m. local time to follow all the action right to the very end, and we hope to have you following along with us.

We're unsure of the action, but Dan Shak was just eliminated holding {a-}{k-} against the {a-}{a-} of Mario Chiang Guanilo. Shak will have a few days to relax in London before the high roller, while Guanilo has 90,000 chips.

On an adjacent table, Dan Smith knocked out Viktor Blom. The chips went in the middle on the turn, where Smith had flush and straight draws against a single pair from Blom. Smith made a club flush on the river, and Blom hit the rail.

Smith now has around 100,000 chips.

Seidel Eliminated

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Poker legend Erik Seidel has been eliminated in the last level of the day. The multiple bracelet winner had raised preflop to 1,600 with Dhru Patel calling behind him to see a {J-}{3-}{2-} flop. Seidel checked and then jammed for 14,000 over Patel's 3,000 bet.

Patel called with {K-}{J-}, ahead of Seidel's {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and the board ran out with a {7-} turn and {J-} river.

Patel is the chip with almost 150,000.

Season 1 (2004) – John Shipley

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Winner of the EPT1 London John Shipley.
Winner of the EPT1 London John Shipley.

The UK’s John Shipley has been a staple in the poker world for nearly two decades, with his first cash coming back in April of 1994 when he finished ninth in a £500 No Limit Hold’em event at the Irish Poker Open for £500 – that’s right, he broke even. Over the next decade, Shipley notched numerous four and five-figure scores, including a seventh-place finish in the 2002 World Series of Poker Main Event for $125,000.

Shipley, who was a part of the groundbreaking Late Night Poker, then made history as the first-ever EPT London winner in October 2004. That year 175 runners paid the £4,000 buy-in and created a prize pool of £763,379. Notables Marcel Luske and Noah Boeken both made the final table, but finished in seventh and sixth respectively for £14,800 and £16,800. As you know, Shipley prevailed and captured the £200,000 first-place prize.

Since then Shipley has continued to play poker and rack up cashes, most coming at the WSOP in Las Vegas. For instance, in 2008 Shipley finished ninth in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event for $56,782, and three years later he placed third in the 2011 WSOP $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha Championship for $369,575 – his biggest career score. Most recently, Shipley finished 472nd in the 2012 WSOP Main Event for $24,808.

Just before the level change, Erik Seidel opened to 700 from the cutoff. Ben Martin three-bet to 2,225 from the small blind, Seidel called, and the flop came {q-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. Martin led out for 2,050, Seidel quickly called, and the turn was the {3-Clubs}.

Martin slowed down, checking to Seidel who tossed out a single blue T5,000 chip. Martin matched the bet with a blue chip of his own.

Both players knuckled when the {3-Spades} completed the board, and Martin took the pot down with {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} for jacks and threes.

She is Impressed

When we arrived at Table 20, Dan Smith was all in for effectively 30,000 or so on a flop of {3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. Haitao Wu was in the tank, and by the looks of it, Smith had bet 6,600 and Wu raised to 13,500. Smith responded with an all-in wager, and Wu dipped into the tank.

Finally the Brit folded his hand, and Smith dragged in the pot.

"I just wanted to impress her," Smith said with a grin as he motioned towards his masseuse.

"I'm impressed," she responded.

Leo Margets - Eliminated
Leo Margets - Eliminated

After a raise and a call from Dhru Patel, Leo Margets three-bet to 3,000 from out of the small blind. The original raiser folded, and Patel called on the button.

The dealer fanned {j-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, Margets checked, and Patel fired out 7,050. Margets check-raised all in for what looked like 20,000 or so, and Patel snap-called.

Margets: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Patel: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

The turn and river came {j-Hearts}, {2-Diamonds} respectively, and the Team PokerStars Pro hit the rail.

Don't Call it a Comeback

Mario Chiang Guanilo and Aris Petropoulos checked to Theo Jorgensen on a flop of {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{9-Spades}. The Dane fired out 2,000, and only Guanilo called.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds}, Guanilo checked again, and Jorgensen tossed out another 6,000. Guanilo tanked for no more than 10 seconds before folding.

Jorgensen, who struggled out of the gate today, is back up near the starting stack of 30,000.
