Shurane Vijayaram - $10,000 Main Event Aussie Millions Winner 2017

What a final hand to end a fantastic event, and with that Shurane Vijayaram has become the 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event champion!

Vijayaram’s AU$1.6 million-victory came after a relatively short heads-up battle with an amazing river call to end the event. Unfortunately for Ben Heath, his all in jam on the river didn’t get past Vijayaram, who took his time evaluating the entire hand before making one of the best hero calls you will ever see!

For Vijayaram, the win marked one of the most amazing poker stories you will hear. Only a week ago Vijayaram entered a Sunday night $130-rebuy tournament here at Crown Casino and won himself a seat into the Main Event. One week later and that $130 has turned into a seven-figure score. And that is Vijayaram's first ever recorded cash after never before making the money, in any event, he's played.

At the start of Sunday's final table, seven players remained from a starting field of 725 — the third-largest Aussie Millions Main Event in its 20-year history. First to go was Australia's own Luke Roberts, and he was followed by the only American at the table, WSOP bracelet winner David Olson. Roberts took home AU$215,000, and Olson scored AU$270,000.

The next two places on the payout sheet were filled in by the two most experienced and decorated players at the final table. First, it was Germany's Fedor Holz falling in fifth place for AU$335,000, and then Australia's Jeff Rossiter took fourth for AU$445,000. For Holz, it marked an incredible couple of days after finishing 3rd in the ANTON Jewellery $100,000 Challenge just a night earlier for AU$352,800. Rossiter also made some history, making another deep run here in Melbourne, after finishing in 3rd place back in 2011 for AU$700,000.

Along with the aforementioned Holz, Tobias Hausen was the other German pro at the final table, and he advanced into the tournament’s last trio of players. While he held his own throughout the day and even made an additional pay jump courtesy of the Rossiter's elimination, the big stacks of Vijayaram and Heath proved too much to overcome. In the end, he moved all in with ace-jack and was up against Vijayaram jack-ten. Hausen flopped ace to extend his lead but Vijayaram spiked a queen on the turn to make a straight and that left us with two.

Vijayaram entered the heads-up duel with the lead, a lead he held for the most part of the 120-hands leading up to this point, and an entertaining duel it was. Heath tried to pick away at Vijayaram for the entirety of their 29 heads-up hands but could never find that much needed double up to get him back in the game. Eventually, it all had to end and Vijayaram capped off a memorable day with a fantastic call to win it all.

Pokernews spoke to Vijayaram right after his career defining score for his take on his first official live tournament cash.

“Absolutely amazing, it's like a dream!” Gushed a clearly elated Vijayaram.

“I qualified last Sunday night in a AUD$130 rebuy tournament. First Aussie Millions satellite I ever played, this is the fourth-ever tournament I played at Crown. I've played poker for a long time but I'm more a cash game player than a tournament player. I'm just getting back into tournaments now.”

Vijayaram will definitely have a story to tell down his local pub the next time he pops in for a few hands of poker.

“Honestly, I was just getting back into pub poker about four months ago. One of the guys at pub poker, and he's here tonight, asked me if had played any Aussie Millions satellites. I was like 'no, I don't really play that often'. But then I thought about it and thought ‘maybe I will play.’ I went down last Sunday, played it, won it and now I'm here.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Melburnian native’s Aussie Millions adventure was the fact he did not seem fazed by the bright lights and world-class competition.

“I was a little bit intimidated on my Day 2, sitting… on Mustapha Kanit's right. He's a really dangerous player and when I first sat down at the table I was really nervous. But after I had taken on some of those players – I played with Tony Dunst on my Day 1 – I got the confidence to trust my read. That's something that this tournament has really strengthened, trusting my read. Before that, I didn't have as much confidence in my read but having that trust and instinct, the unconscious feeling... it's hard to explain.” Said Vijayaram, who went on to state that he didn’t want the seasoned pros at the final table and the pressure of the chip lead affect him.

“I already played some really good players during this tournament, better players than I've played in my whole life before…. Having that confidence, and confidence in my game I suppose gave me the belief that I could take these guys on.”

Vijayaram’s confidence in his reads and his game definitely counted for a lot when it came to heads-up play against seasoned circuit pro Ben Heath.

“It was tough. Ben has probably played a lot more heads up than I have. I've played heads up but I'm not a heads-up specialist by any means. He made it really tough for me. That call on the river in the last hand, that was a tough call and I had to really analyze the hand and think about what he was representing. He was a really tough opponent and he did really well.” Stated Vijayaram, who went on to tell Pokernews his plans for his poker windfall.

“I'm going to put it in the bank and not look at it for like a month. Maybe I'll go on a holiday for a couple of weeks and relax. I'll probably pay off my credit card.”

The tournament bug will have certainly bitten the Melbournian player and while he said he does not play that many tournaments we’re pretty sure that will change going forwards.

“I think it might actually,” confirmed Vijayaram, “I've been cashing in some other pub poker tournaments in the last four months. That's part of the reason it gave me the confidence to play this. I think I'll play a bit more tournaments, I really like it now - I really enjoy it.”

For Heath, a cool seven-figure payday will definitely be something he can talk about for years to come, but the spotlight tonight is all about Vijayaram.

Ben Heath Eliminated in 2nd Place (AUD$1,000,000)

Nível 31 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Ben Heath - 2nd Place
Ben Heath - 2nd Place

Hand #169: The action started with Shurane Vijayaram raising to 350,000 from the button and finding a call from Ben Heath in the big blind.

The flop fell {6-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Heath checked. Vijayaram fired out 400,000. Heath called.

The turn brought the {3-Hearts} and Heath checked. Vijayaram bet out 500,000 before Heath came over the top with a raise to 1,390,000. Vijayaram thought for a minute then cut out the chips to call and slid them out.

The {q-Spades} completed the board and Heath moved all in for 3,200,000. Vijayaram went into the tank for five minutes as he deliberated over his decision. In the final stages, he ran through the hand convinced himself that Heath had missed a draw and called the all in.

Heath reluctantly flipped over his {k-Spades}{8-Clubs} for king-high and Vijayaram nodded his head before tabling his {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} for a pair and the winning hand.

Heath takes home AUD$1,000,000 for his efforts after finishing in second place. The figure instantly doubles his career earnings after a solid week at the tables.

Hand #139: Shurane Vijarayam raised to 380,000 from the button before Tobias Hausen moved all in for 1,265,000 from the small blind. Ben Heath folded his big blind as the decision fell back on Vijarayam. He thought for a minute then called.

Vijarayam: {j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Hausen: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}

Hausen was in great shape to double up and extended his lead when the flop fell {2-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} giving him a pair of aces. However, the dealer spiked a {q-Clubs} on the turn to give Vijarayam a straight leaving Hausen to chop the pot if a ten was to find its way on the river.

The {8-Spades} would complete the board and Hausen would be eliminated in 3rd place capturing AUD$620,000 for his efforts.

Jeff Rossiter Eliminated in 4th place (AUD$440,000)

Hand #137: Jeff Rossiter raised to 240,000 under the gun with {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} before Shurane Vijayaram moved all in from the big blind with {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for enough to cover Rossiter’s 3 million in chips.

Rossiter went deep into the tank, deliberating for several minutes, before finally finding a call to flip for his tournament life. The board ran out {10-Clubs}{k-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{j-Hearts} to see Vijayaram spike a king and his supporters on the rail erupt with cheers and applause.

Rossiter finishes in 4th place for AUD$440,000.

Fedor Holz Eliminated in 5th Place (AUD$335,000)

Fedor Holz - 5th Place
Fedor Holz - 5th Place

Hand #52: Jeff Rossiter raised to 180,000 from the cutoff and was called by Fedor Holz in the big blind.

The flop came {6-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Spades} and Holz checked. Rossiter then slid out 140,000 only to see Holz move all in for 730,000 a moment later. Rossiter snap-called and the cards were tabled.

Rossiter: {a-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Holz: {a-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Holz found himself behind to a higher pair and wouldn't improve as the board ran out the {k-Hearts} and {4-Clubs} to see him fall in fifth place and collect AUD$335,000.

Another nice collect for Holz who only yesterday collected AUD$352,800 for his 3rd-place finish in the ANTON Jewellery $100,000 Challenge to see him cap off a very profitable week at the tables.

Hand #35: The action started with Ben Heath raising to 135,000 from under the gun and finding a call from Shurane Vijayaram in the cutoff. Jeff Rossiter was seated on the button and reached for his chips before sliding out a raise to 490,000. David Olson was in the big blind and went into the tank for several minutes before he pushed out a cold four-bet totalling 1,300,000. Heath and Vijayaram snap folded before Rossiter went into the tank. He opted to call.

The flop came {2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and Olson immediately moved all in for 1,300,000. Rossiter snap-called.

Rossiter: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Olson: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Olson was in trouble against Rossiter's pocket pair and would find no help from the {10-Clubs} turn or {5-Spades} river to see him fall in 6th place collecting AUD$270,000.

Vijayaram Leads Aussie Millions Main Event Final Table; Fedor Holz and Jeff Rossiter Still in Contention

After six days of scintillating action in the Crown Poker Room, the 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event final table is set. Play recommences at 12:30 pm local time Sunday 29 January.

Just seven of the 725-strong field remain to duke it out for the AUD$1.6 million (~$1.2 million USD) first prize and coveted AUD$30,000 9ct gold, diamond-studded ANTON Jewellery Main Event Champion bracelet.

Leading the way will be Shurane Vijayaram who steamrolled the Day 4 field and will begin play with an impressive 7,470,000 in chips, more than double that of next closest rival Ben Heath who has 3,270,000.

Vijayaram won a ticket into this Main Event through a $130 rebuy satellite and with no live cashes to his name, according to Hendon Mob, he has found himself in a fantastic position to make his first score a huge one.

Joining Vijayaram on the final table will be German superstar Fedor Holz. An instantly recognizable name to any poker fan, Holz has amassed over $20 million in live earnings and is coming in off the back of an AUD$352,800 (~$266,524 USD) score for his third place finish in the ANTON Jewellery $100,000 Challenge. Holz will begin the final table as the short stack with 1,165,000.

Also making an appearance on this final table will be prominent Australian pro Jeff Rossiter, who finished third in this event back in 2011 for AUD$700,000. Rossiter will be looking to go two places better this time around, starting this final table third in chips with 3,105,000.

Seat 1: Jeff Rossiter (Australia) 3,105,000

Jeff Rossiter

Returning as the third largest stack, this is the second time Jeff Rossiter has made the Aussie Millions Main Event final table. The first came back in 2011 when the Adelaide native finished in third for AUD$700,000 ($692,315 USD).

This marked the start of Rossiter’s entry into the big leagues with the young professional making close to $1 million for the year, final tabling the ANZPT Melbourne and winning the Joe Hachem Deep Stack before going on to finish 2011 with a third place finish in the APPT Macau Main Event.

Rossiter returned to Macau the following year where, in addition to cashing in the Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon Main Event in June, he took down the HKD$23,200 Asia Championship of Poker Warm-Up for HKD$1.7 million ($229,276 USD) and went on to crush the HKD$250,000 High Roller for HKD$2.2 million ($286,949 USD).

The Australian’s biggest career score also came in Macau at the 2013 HKD$1 million GuangDong Millions where he finished second for a cool HKD$24.5 million ($3.1 million USD).

Rossiter is Australia’s second highest earning tournament player with over $6.3 million in tournament winnings – only Joe Hachem has won more. Rossiter told Pokernews he’s now retired from professional poker so a win here where it all started six years ago would be a fitting end to a glittering career.

Seat 2: Tobias Hausen (Germany) 2,955,000

Tobias Hausen

One of the two German players remaining in the field (the other being high-stakes superstar Fedor Holz) Tobias Hausen returns as the fourth largest stack.

Hailing from Ockfen, in western Germany near the Luxembourg border, Hausen has been playing the live circuit since 2011 and has cashed in a wide range of events across the globe ranging from EPTs to WSOPs. With just over $460,000 in live tournament winnings, Hausen is a solid journeyman poker player with a variety of mixed game cashes on his resume.

Prior to making the Aussie Millions Main Event Hausen’s best result came in the 2015 WSOP $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Spilt-8 or Better where he finished eighth for a $45,661 payday.

The 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event marks the pinnacle of Hausen’s poker playing career to date, and with the seven remaining players all guaranteed at least AUD$210,000 ($158,645 USD), this will be the German player’s best result so far regardless of where he finishes.
