Raiden Kan Leads Final 30 Players; Ivey and Barer Still in Contention

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Raiden Kan
Raiden Kan

The 2015 Aussie Millions Poker Championship AU$10,600 Main Event began with 668 players, but after Day 3 concluded just 30 remained. Raiden Kan leads the field with 1,775,000 in chips, but two other names dominate the headlines.

Ami Barer is looking to do the improbable and defend his title, while the legendary Phil Ivey, who has won the AU$250,000 Challenge two out of the last three years, looks to add an Aussie Millions Main Event title to his résumé. Barer and Ivey bagged 443,000 and 439,000 respectively.

Others still in contention for the AU$1,600,000 first-place prize are European Poker Tour regular Andrew Chen (1,165,000); two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Brian Rast (1,156,000); online star Richard "nutsinho" Lyndaker (943,000); Australian poker pro Grant Levy (471,000); World Poker Tour champ Jonathan Roy (467,000); and the brother of Joe, Tony Hachem (409,000).

Day 3 began with 135 players looking to claim a portion of the AU$6,480,000 prize pool by cracking the top 72. Among those to leave empty handed were Liam O'Rourke, Angel Guillen, Day 1b chip leader Ian Wassell, Stephen Chidwick, Jarred Graham, Ismael Bojang, Tony Bloom, Jay Kinkade, Gary Benson, Simon Deadman, Philipp Gruissem, and last year's third-place finisher Jake Balsiger.

The money bubble took a while to burst, but eventually it did in the first hand back from the dinner break. It happened in Level 16 (2,500/5,000500) when James Kennedy, who was extremely short, called all in from the small blind after Victor Teng had raised from under the gun. Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang and one other player called as well but folded after Teng continued for 22,000 on an {a-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop.

Teng: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Kennedy: {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

The hand was over by time the {6-Clubs} came on the turn and applause rang out around the room as the remaining players guaranteed themselves AU$15,000.

From there the in-the-money eliminations began to mount and included Spindler (70th – AU$15,000), Kane Kalas (62nd – AU$15,000), Eoghan O'Dea (60th – AU$15,000), Dylan Honeyman (56th – AU$20,000), Billy "The Croc" Argyros (53rd – AU$20,000), Terrence Chan (49th – AU$20,000), Huang (48th – AU$20,000), and 2014 WSOP Main Even runner-up Felix Stephensen (43rd – AU$20,000).

Stephensen fell in Level 18 (4,000/8,000/1,000) when his{J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} couldn't overcome the {J-Spades}{J-Hearts} of Ivey on the final board of {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Just like that the Norwegian was gone from the 2015 Aussie Millions Main Event.

The remaining players will return for Day 4 action at 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday and play down to the final table of seven. Will Ivey navigate his way to the final table? Will Barer's title defense continue? Join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team then as we bring your all the action and eliminations straight from the tournament floor.

While you wait, check out this video of Sarah Herring chatting with Phil Ivey on Day 3:

Double Elimination Sends Trevallion and Day to the Rail

Nível 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Alex Trevallion
Alex Trevallion

Action folded around to Alex Trevallion on the button and he shoved all in for roughly 145,000. Manny Stavropoulos then moved all in over the top, and Gregory Day called off from the big blind for 78,000.

Trevallion: {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Stavropoulos: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Day: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}

All three players held an ace, which meant it came down to the kicker. Stavropoulos was best in that department, and he paired it on the {4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop to strengthen his position. Neither the {4-Hearts} turn nor {K-Diamonds} river changed a thing, and Day became the 34th-place finisher while Trevallion bowed out in 33rd.

It's been a good week for Trevallion, who won the AU$25,000 Challenge for AU$645,150 and final tabled the AU$100,000, which will conclude on Saturday.

Ivey Sends Stephensen Home

Felix Stephsnen

"That damn Ivey, huh?"

Those were the words from last year's World Series of Poker Main Event runner-up Felix Stephensen after he made his way to the payout desk following an elimination at the hands of Phil Ivey.

Stephensen's {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} couldn't overcome the {J-Spades}{J-Hearts} of Ivey on the final board of {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{10-Spades}, and the Norwegian was gone from the 2015 Aussie Millions Main Event.

Ivey increased to 410,000 in chips.

Rast Leaps into Chip Lead

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

Brian Rast has just won one of, if not the biggest, pot of the tournament to leap into the chip lead with 1,120,000.

He and Don Mishra had made it to the river with around about 400,000 in the middle and the board read {7-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{a-Hearts}{8-Spades}{q-Spades}. Rast was first to act and bet 300,000, enough to send Mishra into the tank for several minutes. Eventually he nodded and said, "Okay, I call."

Rast opened {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} for top set, beating out Mishra's {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}. The man from Singapore will have to rebuild from 92,000 now.

James Kennedy Bubbles Aussie Millions Main Event

Nível 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
James Kennedy eliminated as the 2015 Aussie Millions bubble boy.
James Kennedy eliminated as the 2015 Aussie Millions bubble boy.

It took just one hand post dinner to burst the bubble and the unfortunate soul who'll walk away with nothing is James Kennedy.

He was down to fumes and called all in from the small blind after Victor Teng raised from under the gun. Bryan Huang and one other player called as well but folded after Teng continued for 22,000 on an {a-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop.

Teng: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Kennedy: {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

The hand was over by time the {6-Clubs} came on the turn and applause rang out around the room, mainly from players congratulating themselves. All those remaining are guaranteed AU$15,000.

Gruissem Soft Bubbles

Nível 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

The Main Event has entered hand for hand phase after Phillip Gruissem busted in 74th spot.

He opened from the hijack and Brian Rast peeled from the big blind to see a {7-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop roll out. Gruissem continued for 15,500 and called after Rast check-raised to 51,500. The turn was the {q-Diamonds} and Rast led for 35,000. Call. On the {10-Spades} river, Rast led for 115,000 and Gruissem called all in with {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} for a flush. It was no good though as Rast had the nuts with {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

Gruissem winced when he saw the hands but still shook Rast's hand before he left.

The Man In Charge

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Jan Suchanek
Jan Suchanek

With just a few more eliminations to go until the money is reached, Jan Suchanek leads the way with a massive stack of 1.1 million in chips. Suchanek is no stranger to the top spot of the counts or tournament poker, as the current leader entered Day 3 in pole position and boasts over $630,000 in live tournament earnings.

Suchanek has several big results on his record, but his best finish in the Aussie Millions Main Event came back in 2007 when he took 22nd for AU$60,000.

Originally hailing from Canada, Suchanek now resides in New Zealand, which is a quick hop over from Melbourne. As the only player into seven figures right now, Suchanek is in a prime position to make an extremely deep run in this event. Last year, with a similar field size in the event, Day 3 finished with 36 players remaining and seven of them over a million in chips. The day is far from done here, and Suchanek already has more than four of them finished with on Day 3 last year.

The Philanthropist's Run Comes to an End

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Julius Colman
Julius Colman

Julius Colman is a well-respected lawyer and business man who is also an accomplished poker player with nearly AU$1,000,000 in winnings. On top of it all, he is a noted philanthropist.

After making the final table of the 2007 Aussie Millions — where he ultimately finished in fourth place for AU$500,000 — he donated the entire prize to a school for significantly underprivileged children with a high migrant and refugee population.

His work with the disadvantaged children and communities was recently recognized in a unique way when the Government of Australia when he made the Australia Day Honors list. He was awarded an Order of Australia, called an A.M., and subsequently Crown Melbourne had him kick off the Day 1b festivities. Colman made it all the way to Day 3, but his run came up short of the money.

It happened when Colman got his short stack all in on a {8-Spades}{10-Spades}{j-Clubs} flop holding the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for middle pair with an open-ended straight draw. It was no good though as his opponent, Isaac Lau, had flopped the nuts with the {q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. The {4-Clubs} turn gave Colman some life with a flush draw, but the {2-Diamonds} river proved useless.

Last Year's Third-Place Finisher Eliminated

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Jake Balsiger
Jake Balsiger

Jake Balsiger, who finished third in this very event last year, began the day on a short stack of 35,400. The former World Series of Poker October Niner managed to run that up to a formidable stack, but his comeback came crashing down courtesy of Singapore's Don Mishra.

There was around 90,000 already in the pot and a board reading {4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} when a back-and-forth raising war resulted in Balsiger getting his last 100,000 or so all in and being called by Mishra.

Mishra: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Balsiger: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Balsiger held top pair top kicker, but he was drawing dead as Mishra had flopped a set. The meaningless {A-Clubs} was put out on the river for good measure, and Balsiger wished the table luck before taking his leave. There will be no back-to-back cashes for Jakey.

Meanwhile, Quoc Nguyen was also eliminated from the tournament.
