Malka Leads Day 1a of the 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
David Malka
David Malka

The 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event kicked off on Sunday as 175 players turned out for the first of three starting flights. After a long day of play – one that lasted seven 90-minute levels – the field was whittled down to 86 players with David Malka and his stack of 205,400 leading the way.

Most of poker’s biggest names are in Melbourne for the Aussie Millions, but many of them opted to play the $25,000 Challenge on Sunday. Even so, a few notables took their shot on Day 1a and it didn’t take long for action to heat up.

In Level 4 (150/300/25), Jordan "JWPRODIGY" Westmorland, an American who relocated to Thailand to play online and grind live tournaments in the Asia-Pacific region, was eliminated from the tournament. It happened when action folded to Westmorland in the hijack and he shoved his last 3,750. Naoya Kihara of PokerStars Team Online made the call from the cutoff and the rest of the field folded.

Westmorland: {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Kihara: {a-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

It was a bad spot for Westmorland, and according to the PokerNews Odds Calculator he had just an 11.68% chance of winning the hand while Kihara would score the knockout 85.57% of the time. The {7-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop made things interesting as Westmorland's open-ended straight draw saw his chances of survival jump to 42.42%.

The {3-Spades} turn was a blank, and that meant Kihara was a 3-1 favorite headed to the river. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {2-Hearts}. "Good luck," Westmorland said before making a hasty exit from the tournament floor.

Westmorland made an early exit from the tournament, but he had company on the rail in the form of 2013 World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players' Champion Matthew Ashton and 2012 Aussie Millions Main Event winner Oliver Speidel.

Ashton was eliminated after Liv Boeree opened for a raise, a player on her left called, and Ashton put in a three-bet. Boeree folded, the other player put in a large four-bet, and Ashton moved all in. The player then tanked for a bit before calling with {a-}{a-}, which clearly crushed Ashton's {a-}{k-}. The slowroll was a bitter pill to swallow on what would be Ashton’s last hand.

As for Speidel, who talked to PokerNews earlier in the day, his end came in Level 4 courtesy of Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Tom Grigg.

His final hand came when Grigg opened under the gun and another player flatted. Speidel opted to jam for 2,800, Grigg isolated with a four-bet, and the flatter folded. Speidel tabled {a-}{j-} and found himself in dire straits against Grigg's {a-}{q-}. The board ran out clean and that was all she wrote for Speidel.

While many players failed to survive Day 1a, a bunch of notables managed to punch their ticket to Day 2 including Antonio Fazzolari (190,500), Edison Nguyen (133,900), Guillaume Rivet (125,000), Jake Balsiger (110,400), Tom Grigg (110,000), Casey Kastle (93,000), and last year’s runner-up Joseph Cabret (75,900).

Day 1b is set to kick off at 12:30 local time. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the action and eliminations from the floor of the Crown Poker Room, so be sure to join us then. Until then, good night from Melbourne!

Glazier Doubles; Rivet Records a KO

Aussie Jackie Glazier was all in and at risk preflop holding {a-}{q-} against an opponent with {5-}{5-}. The {j-}{j-}{10-} flop gave Glazier four extra outs to make broadway and three extra outs to counterfeit the small pair. The turn was a brick, leaving Glazier one card away from elimination, but fortunately for her a {q-} completed the board.

The very next hand the player with {5-}{5-} was eliminated by Guillaume Rivet. Rivet's {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} dominated the player's {k-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, and the board came {7-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

Motown Kurganov

Igor Kurganov open-shoved for 8,400 - a little more than a pot-sized bet - on a flop of {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. His opponent went into the tank, and about 90 seconds later he made the call.

Kurganov showed the {5-Clubs} for a pair of fives, and his opponent slowly revealed {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} for top-pair top-kicker. The German revealed his second card, the {j-Clubs}, and it was a very important one as the {j-Spades} turned to give him jacks and fives.

The {4-Clubs} bricked off on the river, and Kurganov doubled to 22,000 chips.

Boeree Flops a Set

Liv Boeree

Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree and Amir Minagar took a flop of {10-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Spades} at the start of Level 7. Boeree led out for 2,200, Minagar called, and the turn was the {7-Clubs}.

Boeree slowed down, rapping the felt, and Minagar took the opportunity to flip forward a yellow T5,000 chip. Boeree made the call.

The Brit checked again once the {j-Hearts} completed the board, and Minagar surrendered, tabling {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} for ace-high. Boeree showed {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} for a flopped set of eights, and raked it the pot.

2012 Aussie Millions Champ Eliminated

Nível 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Oliver Speidel
Oliver Speidel

Back in 2012, Oliver Speidel topped a field of 659 players to win this very event for AUD$1.6 million. Speidel was in action here on Day 1a, but his hopes of a second Aussie Millions title recently came to an end courtesy of Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Tom Grigg.

Speidel got off to a rough start, and for the last couple of levels he's been nursing a short stack of around 3,000. An Orbit w/ 2013 Aussie Millions Runner-Up Joseph Cabret

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Joseph Cabret
Joseph Cabret

Poker is a game of patience, and that's something Joseph Cabret knows all too well. In last year's Aussie Millions Main Event, Cabret navigated the 629-player field to make it down to the final table. It was there that he squared off against some stiff competition that included Jay Tan, [Removed:17], Dan Shak, and Patrik Antonius.

Cabret began that final table fifth in chips, but he played a patient game and eventually found himself heads up against Mervin Chan. Cabret was unable to seal the deal, but he still took home AU$1,000,000 for his runner-up finish.

Cabret is in today's field, and we decided to spend an orbit with last year's runner-up.

Hand #1 (Button): Cabret began the orbit with 25,000. The player in the cutoff opened for 625 and Cabret quickly folded the button.

Hand #2 (Cutoff): The under-the-gun player opened for 450, the hijack called, and Cabret released from the cutoff.

Hand #3 (Hijack): Action folded to Cabret and he does the same.

Hand #4 (UTG+1): The under-the-gun player folded and Cabret followed suit.

Hand #5 (Under the Gun): Cabret was first to act and folded.

Hand #6 (Big Blind): One by one the players folded to Cabret and he received a rare walk.

Hand #7 (Small Blind): The hijack opened for 500 and Cabret folded when action reached him.

It was a lackluster orbit to say the least, but remember, poker is all about patience. Clearly Cabret has some.

Today marks the start of three starting flights, and players have a full day of action in store. The plan is to play seven 90-minute levels with a 15-minute break after each. There will also be a 75-minute dinner break.

We're headed out to the field to see who is taking their shot at poker glory here on Day 1a.

It's Time for the 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event!

Welcome to PokerNews' coverage of the 2014 Aussie Millions!

Starting at 2:15 p.m. local time, our team will be live from Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia for updates straight from the tournament floor to your screens. Today, things begin with the Main Event, and are then followed by the $25,000 Challenge beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Last year, Mervin Chan bested the field to claim the title. This year, thanks for a joint partnership with the PokerStars Asia-Pacific Poker Tour, the Main Event is highly expected to attract even more runners. Some even expect this to be the largest Aussie Millions Main Event ever held.

With three starting days, things will be spread out nicely to begin, but then on Wednesday is when all survivors will come together under one roof. Over the course of those starting days, you'll see players such as Phil Ivey, Jason Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Dan Shak, Justin Bonomo, Dan Smith, Liv Boeree, and Barry Greenstein all get involved, but only time will tell if one of those stars will be named the eventual winner or not.

Start time will be here before you know it, so be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for when the cards get underway! We'll see you in a bit.
