John Smith Eliminated After Massive Bluff

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
John Smith
John Smith

A player raised from early position and John Smith called. Quoc Vu three-bet to his direct left, the original raiser folded, and Smith called again. Both players checked the {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop. The {10-Hearts} on the turn prompted a 15,000 bet from Smith, which was a sizable portion of the pot. Vu raised to 35,000 and Smith called.

The {9-Hearts} on the river brought four cards to a straight and Smith moved all in for 62,000. Vu was unsure how to respond to the shove and spent more than three minutes in the tank, all while Smith sat there motionless. Vu had the calling chips in hand and eventually put the chips in with a loud bang.

Smith showed {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for a pair of sevens and a missed flush draw. Vu, visibly relieved, slammed open {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a set of sevens. The Purple Heart recipient's massive bluff didn't get through, and Vu skyrocketed to 375,000.

Esfandiari Kisses His Chips Goodbye ... Literally

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

After a limp from early position, Shawn Buchanan raised, making it 3,800 to play. Antonio Esfandiari called from the small blind, and the early-position limper called too.

The flop came down {J-Hearts}{5-Spades}{7-Spades} and Esfandiari led out with a bet of 5,700. The limper called but Buchanan folded.

On the {Q-Hearts} turn, Esfandiari led again for 9,100. The limper called.

"You never give up, Cyclops?" Antonio asked his glasses-clad opponent. "You're one of those never-give-up types, aren't you? I don't like that type."

The river was the {10-Clubs} and Esfandiari slowed down and checked. "Cyclops" bet 21,000 and Esfandiari dropped into the tank.

"Jack-ten would hurt me emotionally, not just financially," Esfandiari said. "What do you have, Cyclops?"

Esfandiari then cut out enough to call and held it in his hand. He kissed the chips.

"You want a gift?" Esfandiari asked. Then he turned to the dealer, and with chips in hand began to talk. "Will you take this and put it on his stack?"

The dealer shook his head.

"Just give it to him," Esfandiari said. The dealer refused again so Esfandiari himself reached over the table and put the call in front of his opponent's chips.

The player didn't reveal his hand until the dealer made sure to specify that it was, in fact, a call, then the player showed {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a rivered straight, and it was good. Esfandiari shook his head and sent over the chips.

Bryce Yockey Breaking Through

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Bryce Yockey
Bryce Yockey

Bryce Yockey recorded his first WSOP cash in 2009 with a fourth-place finish in $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed. This summer he finally won his first WSOP gold bracelet in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Eight or Better tournament.

Yockey followed that up with a fifth-place finish in Event #67: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller and a sixth-place finish in Event #72: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship. Adding in his 39th-place finish in Event #64: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em/Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Mix and Yockey has earned more than $800,000 of his $1.6-million in WSOP earnings within the last three weeks.

Today, Yockey entered with just under 200,000 and has added about 50,000 to his stack. Given the run he has been on, it would not be a surprise to see Yockey make a deep run in the Main Event and put a nice finishing touch to an already strong summer.

Max Steinberg Eliminated After a Series of Unfortunate Events

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Max Steinberg earlier this summer
Max Steinberg earlier this summer

We headed to Max Steinberg's former table to find out what happened to the November Niner, after previously having seen him with a healthy chipstack.

Jarod Einsohn told us that seven players saw a flop of {10-}{9-}{8-}. It checked to Steinberg who bet 10,000 and Einsohn was the only caller. The pair checked the {6-} on the turn and on the river, which was a {9-}, Steinberg moved all in, putting Einsohn's stack of around 55,000 to the test.

Unfortunately for Steinberg, Einsohn turned over {8-}{9-} for a rivered full house, beating the {q-}{5-} of Steinberg.

Then, a little while later, a player in early position raised and Justin Gwinn called in middle position. Steinberg called on the button and the flop came {9-}{8-}{6-} with two clubs. It checked to Gwinn who bet 4,000. Steinberg moved all in for 28,000. The initial raiser folded and Gwinn called.

Gwinn showed {7-}{7-} and Steinberg {6-}{6-}. The turn was a {k-} but the {10-} river gave Gwinn a straight and eliminated Steinberg.

888poker Ambassadors Lovgren and Hof Double

Nível 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Sofia Lovgren
Sofia Lovgren

Both Sofia Lovgren and Natalie Hof had been nursing short stacks for quite some time today and scored double-ups just before being moved out of the Pavilion and into the Amazon room. Fellow 888poker ambassador Nicolau Villa-Lobos also bumped up his stack and will be on the move soon, as just nine tables remain.

Lovgren got into a heads-up pot against Yehuda Cohen and checked the river of a board {J-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} from middle position. There was 24,000 in the pot and Yehuda Cohen bet 6,300 before facing the check-raise all in by Lovgren. Cohen asked for a count and the shove was for 33,400 in total.

"Sofia, Sofia. Do you have a full house?" Cohen asked and took another 20 seconds before calling. Lovgren replied, "No, quads," and rolled over {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. There were some players on the table joking, "Oh, just quads," while Lovgren raked in the pot with a smile on her face.

One table over, Hof was also at risk. After a raise to 2,300 and a three-bet to 6,000 by the cutoff, Hof shoved from the button for her last 21,700. The initial raiser folded and the cutoff snap-called with {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}. Hof was in desperate shape with {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}, but got there with trips kings thanks to a board of {K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{K-Spades}.

"Teach me how to do it," Greg Mueller joked to her in German and Hof grinned back and said, "Just get it in with the worse hand."

Ferguson Eliminated

One of poker's most famous and most infamous has hit the rail from Table 712. Chris Ferguson's old seat was occupied by another player when we passed his table most recently, and his old tablemates filled us in on what happened.

Apparently, Ferguson and Jerome Evans saw a {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{2-} flop. Ferguson bet 5,000, Jerome Evans made it 17,000, and Ferguson put his stack of about 40,000 in with {a-}{k-}. Unfortunately for the 2000 WSOP Main Event champ, Evans had flopped a set of twos and had him way behind, with Ferguson unable to pull off the subsequent miracle to survive.

Remz Shows Koon the Big Bluff

Sean Remz, pictured in a different event.
Sean Remz, pictured in a different event.

Facing an open and a three-bet from Sean Remz, who put in 6,500 in the cutoff, Jason Koon made it 18,500 in the small blind. The opener folded, but Remz moved all in. Koon got a count of 92,500.

"Why does this always have to happen?" he wondered aloud, muttering something about flipping for all of it. "You snap-shoved, so you probably don't have aces. I know you think I'm just f***ing around, too."

Koon thought for a couple of minutes and revealed the {k-Diamonds}.

"This is my lowest card," he said, folding the {a-Clubs} behind it.

Remz showed {k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and dragged the pot, admitting he didn't think Koon had it.

"I thought I was playing like a huge nit all day," Koon said.

Esfandiari Runs Into Aces and Hits the Rail

Nível 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Farah Galfond opened with a raise to 3,000 from early position, and Antonio Esfandiari called. Action folded around to the cutoff, where Kevin Schulz re-raised to 12,000. Galfond called, and Esfandiari called, as well.

On the {Q-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop, Galfond and Esfandiari checked over to Schulz, who bet 15,000. Galfond folded, but Esfandiari called. The turn was the {2-Diamonds}, and Esfandiari checked again. Schulz bet 35,000. Esfandiari thought for a bit, then moved all in for around 100,000. Schulz called instantly.

Esfandiari: {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}
Schulz: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

Esfandiari was way behind and needed a queen or a jack to stay alive, but the river was the {K-Clubs}, and that did it for him. He hit the rail, while Schulz brought in his stack, bringing him to just under 400,000 chips.

"This is The F***ing Main Event, Bro"

"He called me with ace-high, and now he's getting it in for 150 blinds. What the f*** is going on here?" asked Phil Hellmuth to his table.

The flop read {9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, and Hellmuth had 30,000 committed post-flop from the button. Alan Cutler was all in with a covering stack from the big blind, and Hellmuth was in the tank for his remaining 67,000 or so. After a little while, he folded.

"Want to see what I have?" asked Cutler.

"Sure," replied Hellmuth.

Cutler showed {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, and Hellmuth jumped out of his chair.

"Oh my f***ing god! Are you f***ing kidding me? This is the f***ing Main Event, bro," said an enraged Hellmuth, pounding his fist against a nearby wall.

"Its a win-win for me," said Cutler. "Either you bust me and I have a great story, or I bust you and have a great story."

Mike Leah Gets Value on the River

Nível 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Mike Leah
Mike Leah

A player in middle position raised to 2,800, and Mike Leah called in the cutoff. The remaining players folded, and they were heads-up.

The flop came {Q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, and the first player checked. Leah bet 3,000, and his opponent called. The turn was the {10-Clubs}, and both players checked. On the {5-Hearts} river, the first player checked again, and Leah tossed out a bet of 10,000. His opponent thought for over a minute and then called.

Leah tabled {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} for top pair, top kicker, and that was good enough to win him the pot.
