Day 1 of Event #46: $500 No-Limit Hold’em Freezeout at the 2023 World Series of Poker hosted at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas battled down from 5,342 unique entries to 238 hopefuls. All returning competitors will be guaranteed a cash of $1,611, but it will be the coveted bracelet and the $262,526 first-place purse that everyone will be after.

Preston McEwen, the popular RunGood enthusiast, ended the night leading the field. PokerNews had a chance to speak with him back in March after a very successful WSOPC season. Plenty of big stacks battled to set themselves up for Day 2, including the likes of Yita Choon (1,840,000) from Australia and Filcioni Pollermann (1,690,000), representing Brazil.

Other notables to make it through Day 1 include popular poker personalities Robert Kuhn (830,000) and Jamie Kerstetter (495,000)

Three previous Main Event winners were seen in the field in the form of Chris Moneymaker, Jamie Gold, and Jerry Yang, all of whom failed to find a bag for Day 2.

Plenty of female players in the field made a strong showing including Ebony Kenney, Tiffany Michelle, Maria Ho, Marle Spragg, and Farah Galfond who were all eliminated before the day ended. Veronica Brill was going great until she took a tough beat to lose a 700,000 pot that often would have chopped.

Players will return at 10 a.m. local time on June 21 in Level 23, where blinds are 15,000/30,000 and a 30,000 big blind ante.

Persinger Hits a Triple

Nível 22 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
LoriAnn Persinger
LoriAnn Persinger

On a board of 3567 an late position player moved all in for 300,000, with a player in early position already in preflop. LoriAnn Persinger steeled her will, and made the call from the cutoff.

The early position player tables Q3, the middle position player KQ, and 99. The river rolled off an 6 and Persinger had executed the triple up, busting the early position player in the process.

"What a call!" a tablemate exclaimed.

"I didn't like it," said Persinger, "But I asked myself, 'How am I not good here?'"

Brill Gets Runnered; Here Come The Brazillions

Nível 21 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Veronica Brill
Veronica Brill

Veronica Brill and Luis Dornerles had a raising war on a flop that read 1093 and it appeared both players were tied when their hands were put in play.

Veronica Brill: A10
Luis Dornerles: A10

Brill had well over 300,000 as her effective stack and it appeared it was a lock for a chop, but when the K came on the turn Dorneles picked up the nut flush draw. When the the 8 peeled the river, Brill could be heard saying, "Oh my god...", as she was forced to accept her payout slip.

At an outer table, Alcioni Pollermann had a shorter stack at risk on a board that read J105.

Opponent: KQ
Alcioni Pollermann: Q10

The board was as nice as his opponent could hope for without making a pair, as they had the open-ended royal flush draw but the J and 10 left Pollermann with checkmark and he soared well over a million chips.

Bubble Burst After Two Hands; 796 Left

Nível 17 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
WSOP Sign
WSOP Sign

Once the dealers completed the hand they were on, three players had busted. Hand for hand started with three players still to eliminate. On the first hand, there were five all-ins called with two eliminations.

On the second hand, they were several all-ins and calls with seven eliminations.

One situation was Table 179.
Player at risk: K9
Opponent: 1010

The board ran out 6798J and we lost a contestant.

Another player busted in a huge pot with pocket kings against aces. So seven players are spliting the last payouts.

Hinkle Eliminated as the Bubble Bursts

Grant Hinkle

Radoslav Stoyanov moved all in from late position and Grant Hinkle called from the button, with his life on the line, as the tournament was being played in hand-for-hand until the bubble could be reached.

Grant Hinkle: AK
Radoslav Stoyanov: J5

The flop gave Stoyanov some outs for the upset, 1048. The turn looked like it might save Hinkle from elimination, but a gut-wrenching 6 hit the river, and after the other hands around the room were completed it was announced that the bubble had burst.

A player at Stoyanov's table said, partly with relief at making the money, partly in fear, "If you're going to have that kind of luck, I don't want to be at this table."

Persinger With Big Double as Bubble Looms

Nível 17 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
LoriAnn Persinger
LoriAnn Persinger

Only a dozen or so away from the money, LoriAnn Persinger was able to get all her chips in the middle holding aces on a paired board against an inferior pair of tens. When she made aces full on the turn, she locked up the hand.

Just a couple of tables over, a tournament director gave an entire table a warning for slow play, as the table joked about the nature of the bubble.

With less than fifty players to eliminate to reach the money, Jean-Michel Texier opened to 15,000 in early position and the blinds called.

On the flop 3Q9, Texier continuation-bet to 10,000 and it was enough to take the pot. With a 500,000 stack, he can put pressure on his opponents.
