Big Names in Contention on Day 3 of Event #47: $1,000 Seniors Championship

Carol Fuchs
Carol Fuchs

After two exciting first-day flights that saw a record-setting 7,188 total entries and an action-packed Day 2, we are down to just 198 players that will play Day 3 of Event #47: $1,000 Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship.

The cards are scheduled to be back in the air at 10 a.m. local time at the 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas.

The lion's share of the $6,397,320 prize pool is still very much up for grabs, with each player already having secured themselves a fantastic prize of $4,703. However, everyone left in the field will be eyeing the $694,909 top prize and the prestigious WSOP gold bracelet.

Of the 198 remaining, there are a handful who have already done their best to break away from the pack. Ben Sarnoff is our Day 2 chip leader after bagging 3,155,000, with most of that being collected in the final hours of Day 1. Valerii Lubenets is not far behind with 2,810,000 with Jan Pettersson also lingering around the leaders with 2,600,000. Mike Landers (1,995,000) and Patricia Devine (1,935,000) complete the top five.

Plenty of illustrious players remain in the field looking to add a piece of jewelry to their collection of poker highlights. 2012 Seniors Championship winner Allyn Shulman is still very much in the mix, sitting on a stack of 1,130,000.

The 2009 WSOP Player of the Year Jeffrey Lisandro could do some damage despite his below-average chip stack of 580,000. Bracelet winner Ken Aldridge (965,000), 2015 WSOP Main Event third-place finisher Neil Blumenfield (650,000), WSOP bracelet winner Carol Fuchs (640,000), and Women's Poker Hall of Famer Kathy Liebert (635,000) all have some work to do but will be present for Day 3.

The players will play ten 60-minute levels with 15-minute breaks taking place after every two levels. They will take their 60-minute dinner break at the end of Level 29.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for full live coverage of this and all other bracelet-awarding events at the 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas.

Devine Stunned by Brunner

Nível 23 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Brian Brunner
Brian Brunner

Patricia "Patty" Devine opened to 80,000 from the hijack and Brian Brunner shoved from the button for 460,000. The big blind contemplated his decision for about 90 seconds before folding. Devine then asked for a count, complained that the previous player in Brunner's seat had already got her today, and eventually made the call.

Brian Brunner: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}
Patricia Devine: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Devine shouted for low cards but the flop came {k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades} to have Devine drawing to just one out.

Devine did not get her help as the {j-Spades} and {7-Spades} completed the board to give Brunner a flush and double him up.

Hoffman Makes a Set for Knockout

Nível 23 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Wilbern Hoffman
Wilbern Hoffman

Randy Marker opened from the hijack to 75,000. The cutoff, Wilbern Hoffman, reraised to 275,000. The small blind made the call moving all in to do so. Marker got out of the way, and it was time for showdown. "I hope you have jacks," the small blind said as the pair tabled their hands.

Small blind: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Wilbern Hoffman: {4-Clubs}{4-Clubs}

"Oh, even worse," the small blind said upon seeing Hoffman's pocket fours. The small blind was behind, but seemed to catch a break on the flop, as the {a-Hearts} appeared in the window, but those hopes were quickly dashed as the full {j-Hearts}{4-Spades}{a-Hearts} flop was spread out, giving Hoffman a set.

Kennedy Doubles Up Through Masters

Nível 23 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
James Kennedy
James Kennedy

Carl Masters opened from the hijack for 70,000, before Day 1A chip leader James Kennedy jammed in the cutoff with 1,205,000 behind.

"You might want to stick around, might have a huge pot," Masters told PokerNews while action was moving back around to Kennedy.

"It is going to be a huge pot," Kennedy added, while already having his hand on his stack, prepared to push them in the middle and simply waiting for the action to get to him. Eventually it did, and he snap-called with the effective stack of 385,000.

James Kennedy: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Carl Masters: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The flip quickly tilted in Kennedy's favor as the {q-Hearts} appeared in the window on the {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} flop. The {6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} turn and river completed the board and ensured the double up for Kennedy.

Capobianco Suffers Bad Beat to End Tournament Run

Nível 24 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Charlie Capobianco
Charlie Capobianco

Charles Capobianco, who started the day with a hair under a million chips, shoved for 370,000 in early position after Mike Landers opened under the gun for 100,000. Landers called.

Mike Landers: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}
Charles Capobianco: {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Capobianco was safe on the {4-Spades}{2-Clubs}{q-Clubs} flop but was heartbroken by the {10-Diamonds} turn.

The {8-Spades} river meant his bracelet dream had come to an end.

Hoffman's Failed Trap Nets Sarnoff Almost Eight Million

Nível 25 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Ben Sarnoff
Ben Sarnoff

Ben Sarnoff opened from under the gun to 85,000 and was called by Luca Dal Cerro in early position, Wilbern Hoffman in the hijack, and Miguel Capriles in the cutoff.

The flop came {j-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Sarnoff continued for 200,000. Dal Cerro folded but Hoffman raised to 600,000. Capriles folded and Sarnoff over-bet jammed. Hoffman called off for over two million more.

Wilbern Hoffman: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Ben Sarnoff: {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Hoffman let out an audible "fuck!" after Sarnoff tabled his two pair, with his planned trap with pocket queens having massively backfired.

The {10-Spades} turn was no help and neither was the {8-Diamonds} river, which meant Hoffman's massive stack was now in the hands of the Day 2 chip leader.

Pett Rivers a Boat for Knockout

Mark Pett
Mark Pett

Mark Pett opened from the cutoff for 110,000. Joseph O'Grady, on the button, moved all in with the effective stack of 650,000. Pett tanked for a minute before making the call.

Joseph O'Grady: {a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Mark Pett: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Pett was behind, but that changed quickly when the {q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{10-Spades} flop paired his ten. The {10-Clubs} turn improved him to trips before the {k-Clubs} river gave him a full boat, more than enough to best O'Grady's ace high and send him out of the tournament.

Liebert Wakes Up to Aces

Nível 26 : 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Kathy Liebert
Kathy Liebert

Action was picked up with around 700,000 in the pot and a flop of {q-Spades}{6-Spades}{3-Spades} on the board.

Valerii Lubenets, in early position, checked to Kathy Liebert in late position. She fired for 300,000 and got a call from Lubenets.

The {2-Hearts} turn was checked through before Lubenets fired for 500,000 and Kathy Liebert made the call. Lubenets turned over {10-Spades}{q-Clubs} for top pair before Liebert showed {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}, good enough to take the pot.

Svenson Crushed After Running Ace-King into Kings Twice

Nível 26 : 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Cheryl Svenson
Cheryl Svenson

Cheryl Svenson found herself in an pre-flop all in hand with Charles Mitchell, who put in his remaining 880,000.

Charles Mitchell: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Cheryl Svenson: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

After recently being one of the chip leaders with nearly four million, Svenson found herself with ace-king against kings for the second time in the last hour.

The {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} flop gave her a straight draw and a backdoor flush draw that vanished on the {2-Clubs} turn.

The {3-Spades} river meant Svenson's once-enormous stack had dwindled down to just 625,000 in record time.

Aces Love Liebert

Nível 27 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Kathy Liebert
Kathy Liebert

Mike Landers opened from early position for 200. Valerii Lubenets made the call from the small blind before Kathy Liebert reraised to 680,000 in the big blind. Landers moved all in with about 2,000,000 behind. Lubenets folded before Liebert made the call with Landers covered.

Mike Landers: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Kathy Liebert: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}

Liebert was out in front, and the {3-Clubs}{7-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} runout did nothing to change that. While the dealer counted each players stack to make sure that Landers was indeed covered, Liebert told PokerNews that this was her fourth time getting pocket aces today.

"I was running bad before. I know it's a bad time to say that," Liebert shared.

"It's a very bad time to say that, as your stacking millions of chips," Carol Fuchs chimed in from across the table.

"I was running bad," Liebert reiterated, "Last night, I lost with top set, with middle set, it's true!"

Liebert's fortunes seem to have changed so far in Day 3, as she continues the pursuit of her second bracelet.
