Lane Leads Final 239 to Start Day 5

Jon Lane
Jon Lane

Welcome to Day 5 of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event, a day which promises to bring even more intensity and excitement as the marathon march toward this year's final table continues.

It was a drama-filled Day 4 yesterday that began with the cash bubble bursting during the first level and Farzad Bonyadi becoming the unfortunate 649th-place finisher, with hundreds of players then following him to the rail as the field whittled down to just 239 by night's end. The elimination of Doyle Brunson in 409th earned the most notice, with players applauding the two-time Main Event champion and 10-time WSOP bracelet winner as he cashed in the ME for the fifth straight decade.

Jon Lane returns as the start-of-day chip leader with 2,839,000, one of a small group bagging more than 2 million last night that included Sami Rustom, Grayson Ramage, Victor Cianelli, Seaver Kyaw, Yann Dion, and Kevin Williams. Meanwhile Brett Richey, David Benefield, Mark Newhouse, Jackie Glazier, Ashley Mason, Yevgiviy Timoshenko, and Rep Porter are among the many strong players who did well on Day 4 to end with healthy stacks around twice the current average of just under 800,000.

Two former WSOP Main Event winners remain in the hunt, with last year's champion Greg Merson returning to a stack of 635,000 and 2001 WSOP ME winner Carlos Mortensen coming back to about half that. 2007 WSOP Europe Main Event winner Annette Obrestad will be returning as well to a big stack of 1,186,000 as she furthers her effort to become the only player besides Phil Hellmuth to win both the WSOP and WSOPE Main Events.

In addition to Merson, other "Octo-Niners" from the 2012 WSOP ME final table made runs into the money this time around, with both Russell Thomas (306th) and Robert Salaburu (355th) cashing yesterday, and last year's ninth-place finisher Steve Gee coming back today to a stack of 466,000. Meanwhile two players found their way into the money for a record-tying fourth straight year, with Christian Harder going out in 608th and Ronnie Bardah returning today to above average chips.

Last year Day 5 saw the field shrink to less than 100 players as the end-of-day chip leader (Kyle Keranen) neared the 7 million-chip mark. Today should follow a similar path as the field gets smaller, the stacks get bigger, and players' dreams of making it to the final table edge closer to reality.

Play resumes at 12 p.m. Pacific time, and we'll be here once again at PokerNews to bring you start-to-finish coverage from the WSOP Main Event. While waiting for cards to go back in the air, take a look as Kristy Arnett brings a recap of yesterday's action and a preview of what's to come:

Steinberg Gets Quads in First Hand

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Max Steinberg
Max Steinberg

Nikolai Sears opened to 35,000 from under the gun, as the action folded around to Max Steinberg on the small blind. He called, as did Bob Bright on the big blind.

The flop came down {9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and the option fell on Sears. He threw out a continuation bet of 56,000 and was called by both opponents. The {9-Diamonds} brought checks all round, before the {7-Spades} completed the board.

Steinberg paused for a moment, before sliding out a bet of 165,000. Bright thought about his decision, before making the call. Sears mucked his hand.

Steinberg then rolled over his {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for quad sevens, much to the surprise of Bright and the rest of the table.

“How does it feel to start off with quads?” said Danard Petit from the one seat.

“Pretty good,” joked Sears, answering for Steinberg.

Sichelstiel Flats Nines Full

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Noah Schwartz
Noah Schwartz

Noah Schwartz raised to 35,000 from the cutoff, and Robert Sichelstiel called from the big blind. The flop came {9-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{8-Spades}, and Sichelstiel check-called 29,000. The turn paired the board with the {8-Hearts}, and Sichelstiel again check-called, this time for 52,000. A {9-Hearts} river double-paired the board, and Sichelstiel checked a final time. Schwartz came out with 129,000 this time, and Sichelstiel quickly called.

Schwartz showed {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for the second nut full.

"I knew something was up," Sichelstiel said, flashing the {9-Spades} for nines full of eights. "I should have known."

"You had nines full," Schwartz said simply. "I would have raised with your hand."

Gee Knocks Out Sheikhan

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Shawn Sheikhan (from Day 4)
Shawn Sheikhan (from Day 4)

Shawn Sheikhan — who finished 11th in the WSOP Main Event in 2005 — just open-raised all in from late position for his last 340,000 or so, and the action folded to 2012 WSOP Main Event ninth-place finisher Steve Gee in the small blind.

Gee checked his cards, then pushed all in himself with a stack that appeared roughly similar to Sheikhan's, and the big blind stepped aside.

Gee: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Sheikhan: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

The flop came {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{4-Diamonds} to swing the advantage Gee's way, and after the {10-Diamonds} turn and {3-Clubs} river, his pair of aces earned him the pot. The stacks were counted to make sure, and indeed Gee had Sheikhan covered and the latter quickly departed.

The Prettiest Card in the Deck - For Jason Cohen

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jason Cohen (Day 4) makes a straight flush
Jason Cohen (Day 4) makes a straight flush

Jason Cohen and Somar Al-Darwich were heads up on a flop of {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, and after a series of bets, Cohen was all in for 634,000. Al-Darwich called.

Cohen: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Al-Darwich: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}

Al-Darwich flopped a set of eights, but Cohen held a straight flush draw.

"Anyone fold a diamond?" Al-Darwich asked his tablemates, who remained silent. "Prettiest card in the deck. Ace of spades."

The turn card was one of the prettiest cards in the deck for Cohen, because the {j-Diamonds} gave him an unbeatable straight flush. Stunned, Al-Darwich threw his hands on his head and walked away from the table as the meaningless {4-Clubs} completed the board. Cohen doubled to 1.46 million chips, while Al-Darwich fell to 1.278 million.

Gazes Hits the Rail

Kristy Gazes, seen here playing an event earlier this summer.

Kristy Gazes jammed 163,000 after action folded to her on the button. Cary Marshall announced a call in the small blind, and the big blind folded immediately.

"I like your hand," Gazes said before the players showed.

Marshall: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Gazes: {k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}

Gazes was behind, but she had two live cards. The flop came down {10-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} though, pairing Marshall and leaving Gazes with three outs. The turn and river were {9-Hearts} and {7-Hearts}, and Gazes was done.

Schwarmann Busts Rajkumar in Huge Pot

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Vivek Rajkumar
Vivek Rajkumar

We just had a pot of almost two million chips that has seen Vivek Rajkumar, who was having a good day so far, suddenly get eliminated by Nick Schwarmann.

Rajkumar raised it up to 35,000 under the gun +1, and Schwarmann reraised to 82,000 two spots over. Action folded back around to Rajkumar, who tanked for a minute or so before four betting to 202,000. Schwarmann made the call, and the flop came down {2-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}. Rajkumar checked to Schwarmann, who moved all in after 30 seconds of thought. Rajkumar snap called, and we had a huge pot on our hands as the cards were being tabled.

Rajkumar: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Schwarmann: {a-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

According to the PokerNews odds calculator, Rajkumar held a slight edge of 53% to Schwarmann's 47%, and Rajkumar's odds increased to 73% when the turn came the {K-Hearts}. Rajkumar was looking to fade an ace or a diamond, but unfortunately for him, the one-in-four shot came through, as the {5-Diamonds} hit the river.

The stacks were counted down, and it was determined that Schwarmann barely had Rajkumar outchipped. Rajkumar gave his patented "so sick," comment as the chips were being counted, then wished everyone luck while shaking hands with the players at the table before exiting the Mothership.

Liu Shoves with Nine-High; Ben Cherif Second in Chips

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Rachid Ben Cherif
Rachid Ben Cherif

Rachid Ben Cherif opened to 40,000 from under the gun and both Cheng Liu and Josh Prager called from the hi-jack and small blind respectively.

Ben Cherif continued for 78,000 on the {K-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} flop before Liu announced he was all in as Prager quickly mucked. Ben Cherif asked for a count, and when it was revealed to be 626,000, he went into the tank for close to two minutes before making the call.

Ben Cherif: {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Liu: {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

The dealer delivered the {5-Diamonds} on the turn and immediately Liu stood up, clapped his hand and cheered before realizing that his pair on the turn actually gave Ben Cherif the nut flush. The river landed the {10-Hearts} and Liu was headed out the door as Ben Cherif stacked his chips to roughly 2,750,000 in chips.

First Break of Day Five: Jon Lane Still Leads

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jonathan Lane
Jonathan Lane

The first level of Day 5 is in the books. Out of the 239 players who started the day, now only 187 remain. Jon Lane, who started the day at the top of the leaderboard, still leads with over three million in chips. After the flurry of eliminations in post-bubble play during yesterday’s first level, the bustouts came much more slowly today. One of the reasons for that is likely the increase in payouts. Today’s first bustout, Donald Swartz, received $37,019, nearly twice as much as the first player paid yesterday. More importantly, with over 6,000 players eliminated and only about 200 bustouts to go before the final table, players are starting to look ahead to a potential $ 8,359,531 payday.

Shawn Sheikhan was among the early eliminations today. He was knocked out by 2012 Main Event final tablist Steve Gee. Vivek Rajkumar, who had a tough table draw with Jonathan Jaffe, Tommy Chen, Brett Richey, and defending Main Event champion Greg Merson on his left, made a valiant effort to build his stack early in the day. It didn't last, however, as he busted out when Nick Schwarmann made a flush to beat Rajkumar's pocket queens.

Several well-known players are building impressive stacks. Max Steinberg, one of the chips leaders on Day 4, picked up right where he left off yesterday with the help of quads on the first hand of the day. Rachid Ben Cherif is climbing the leaderboard as well, as is Jason Cohen.

Young pro Amit Makhija also busted out today. He was eliminated by Beverly Lange, an amateur player from near Austin, Texas, who has over a million chips. Lange joins the list of women making deep runs in the Main Event this year alongside known pros like Jackie Glazier and Annette Obrestad.

Players return to their tables in 20 minutes. We'll have complete chip counts for you soon, and we'll be back with all the action when play resumes.

Richey Knocks Out Defending Champion Greg Merson

Nível 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Greg Merson is eliminated from the 2013 Main Event
Greg Merson is eliminated from the 2013 Main Event

Brett Richey raised to 40,000 from middle position, and Greg Merson moved all in next to act for 481,000. As soon as action got back to Richey he made the call, and the defending champ was in need of a lot of help.

Merson: {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Richey {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

The flop brought plenty of action, coming down {3-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{2-Spades}. Merson had managed to pair his deuce, but Richey also paired his kicker. The one diamond meant that Merson could catch runner-runner diamonds or also catch a runner-runner straight for a chop, but the {9-Spades} on the turn got rid of those possibilities. Merson would need a deuce and a deuce only to keep his shot at back-to-back titles alive, but it wasn't meant to be, as the {4-Spades} hit the river.

Merson shook hands with Richey before he grabed his bag, wished everyone luck, and headed out of the Mothership. Merson had the deepest run for a defending champion in the Main Event since 2009, where Peter Eastgate finished 78th in his title defense. His elimination means that we will have a new champion, and also means that Steve Gee is the last remaining member of last year's Octo-Nine.
