Kroon On Top as Day 2c Set To Begin

Day 1c Chip Leader Mark Kroon
Day 1c Chip Leader Mark Kroon

Welcome to PokerNews' Day 2c coverage of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event. Today marks the second of the Day 2 flights as the 2,306 Day 1c survivors return to the felt to continue their respective journeys toward poker's biggest prize. A total of 1,880 players took part in Tuesday's Day 2a and 2b flights, and 800 of those survived to see Day 3.

Mark Kroon commands the biggest stack of today's bunch, having bagged up a whopping 246,300 in chips to hold the overall chip lead. In the waning moments of Day 1c, Kroon eliminated 2008 November Niner Ylon Schwartz to add to his already impressive stack. Imari Love is the only other player returning on Day 1c above the 200,000 mark. Love eliminated 1996 Main Event champion Huck Seed en route to his finishing Day 1c with 214,300.

Countless notables will also be returning on Day 2c, two in particular who will be taking their seats for the first time. Gus Hansen, who happens to be at the same table as Kroon, never took his seat on Day 1c and as a result, only has 17,975 in chips. Tom Dwan also failed to physically take part in Day 1 action and will begin Day 2c with 17,825. Others that will look to build on a subpar Day 1 include Daniel Negreanu (15,600), Antonio Esfandiari (14,500), Eric Baldwin (12,750), 2013 bracelet winner Steve Gross (12,200) and David "Doc" Sands (3,325).

Conversely, plenty of poker's biggest names fared quite well on their opening Main Event flight. 2010 November Niner Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi was near the top of the chip counts throughout Day 1 and ended with 176,100. Isaac Haxton (134,250), Calvin Anderson (123,275), Phil Ivey (119,650), Marvin Rettenmaier (117,825), Vanessa Selbst (115,225), Matt Waxman (103,625) and Phil Hellmuth (92,850) are also off to fast starts and will no doubt be hoping to do more of the same during today's five levels.

Be sure to keep it locked in at PokerNews for live updates on all of the exciting action throughout the day. Also, be sure to check out Sarah Grant's July 10th update below.

Bruce Buffer with a very spirited "Shuffle Up and Deal!"
Bruce Buffer with a very spirited "Shuffle Up and Deal!"

Jack Effel has given the standard World Series of Poker instructions before handing over the microphone to UFC announcer Bruce Buffer.

"Ladies and gentleman... We are live! This is the moment you've been waiting for... It's time! Let's shuffle up and deal!" bellowed Buffer to put the cards in the air for Day 2c.

As was the case on Day 2a/b (and all the Day 1s), players will play five 120-minute levels with a 20-minute break after each level apart from a 90-minute dinner break after the third level of play.

Gold and Lee Re-Unite

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Jamie Gold (from Day 1c)
Jamie Gold (from Day 1c)

Table 441 in Amazon Purple is located directly in front of the PokerNews blogging desk, and when we looked at the seating draw we were happy to see 2006 World Champion Jamie Gold located in Seat 8 with 41,400.

However, just three seats to Gold's right is someone that isn't as well known, but still has his place in WSOP history as Richard Lee sits with 56,800. Back in 2006 when Jamie Gold collected $12,000,000 for besting 8,773 entrants, Lee finished in 6th place for $2,803,851.

Since then Lee has added a further six WSOP cashes and pushed his career earnings to being just shy of $3 million. Gold on the other hand hasn't had as much success with only an additional four cashes and roughly a further $180,000 in career lifetime earnings.

However with both players re-uniting today, maybe they can emulate the runs they both had back in 2006 and join the elusive club of players making two WSOP Main Event final tables.

The Most Analytical Table in the Room

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Nathaniel Silver from earlier in the World Series
Nathaniel Silver from earlier in the World Series

At one inconspicuous table in the corner of the Brasilia Room sit two players renowned for their analytical skills away from the poker tables. Nate Silver is a statistician and political blogger, most famous for his website FiveThirtyEight.com. Silver’s mathematical approach to politics helped him to correctly predict the winner of all 51 states in last fall’s Presidential election, as well as 31 out of 33 senate races. This success has made his blog one of the country’s most sought-after sources for political prognostication.

Across from Silver sits Jennifer Shahade, a noted chess expert. Shahade has twice won the US Women’s Chess Championship, and has earned the title of Woman Grand Master in 2005. She is also the author of a few books on chess, including Chess Bitch: Women in the Ultimate Intellectual Sport.

Silver started the day low in chips with only 20,000, but we recently saw him increase his stack size by over 25%. Action folded to Silver in the small blind, and he raised to 1,200, and Duane Blanchard called from the big blind. Silver continued for 1,550 on the flop after the dealer spread {5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. Blanchard called, and the dealer turned the {7-Clubs}. Both players checked. The river was the {k-Diamonds}, and Silver bet 4,000. Blanchard thought for a minute, then tossed forward a call. Silver showed {k-Spades}{6-Hearts} for top pair. Blanchard folded, and Silver took the pot. His stack was up to 26,000 after the hand.

We'll keep an eye on Silver and Shahade as these two analytical minds try to navigate this massive field. Veteran poker pros Julien Brecard and Tony Ma are at the table as well, so this should be a fascinating table to watch.

Aces vs. Kings vs. Queens

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante

Action folded to Kristijonas Andrulis in middle position, and he kicked off the action by raising to 1,100. Behind him, Todd Rodenborn made the call, then play folded over to Steven Piper in the cutoff seat. Piper reraised to 3,700. On the button was David Hertzog, and he moved all in for 18,025. Adrulis quickly folded, and then it was up to Rodenborn.

"Can I get a count?" he asked the dealer.

The dealer counted out Hertzog's shove, informed Rodenborn of the amount, and then Rodenborn announced that he was all in. He was all in for 21,950.

"Well, there's only one hand that beats me," announced Piper as he slid his chips forward and stood from his chair at the same time. He had the {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

"And I got it!" exclaimed Rodenborn, emphatically tabling the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}.

Hertzog, the shortest player of the three, tabled the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}, which caused the table to erupt in a series of "ooohhss" and "aaahhss."

"Ace me! Ace me! yelled Rodenborn. "Let's just end it!"

Queen! Queen!" cheered Hertzog.

Piper simply stood with his hands on top of his head hoping.

The flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} to give Hertzog the lead.

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" he yelled.

The turn was the {8-Hearts}, and the river was the {3-Clubs}. Hertzog's queens went from worst to first, and he tripled up. Rodenborn was all in for 3,925 on the side pot versus Piper, and he won that to be left with about 8,000 in chips. Piper was left with right around 10,000.

Tom Dwan Dusted

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Tom Dwan
Tom Dwan

Tom Dwan....we hardly knew thee. At least as far as the Main Event is concerned. Dwan sat out all of Day 1 and came into the day with 17,825. Well he was getting involved early and often, and he just busted moments ago.

Action started with a raise to 1,200 by Nicholas Vannewkirk. Dwan was the lone caller, and the two went heads up to a flop of {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. Vannewkirk made it 1,500 to go, and Dwan moved all in for 8,000 total. Vannewkirk made the call, and Dwan saw that he would need to catch up.

Dwan: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Vannewkirk: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

Dwan was looking for an eight, seven, or running clubs to take the hand. The {k-Spades} on the turn made it just an eight or a seven for Dwan, and the {3-Hearts} came on the river, ending Dwan's WSOP.

Rough Start for Ivey

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Phil Ivey came into today with a very healthy stack of 119,650, but the first level hasn't gone well for him, as we just caught him losing a pot to drop him to 70,000.

Ivey started the action with a raise in middle position to 1,300, and Chad Winters defended his big blind as the lone caller. The flop came down {10-Hearts}{2-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, and Winters check called a bet of 1,600 from Ivey. Both players checked on the {j-Diamonds} turn, and the river pair the board, coming the {j-Spades}.

Winters only took a few moments before putting out a bet of 2,600, and Ivey immediately grabbed two orange T5,000 chips, tossed them into the pot, and announced "eight" as they were in the air. This meant a raise to 8,000, and Winters instantly called.

Ivey confidently turned over {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for trip jacks, but it was no good, as Winters held {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a straight. Ivey grimaced a bit before tossing his hand towards the dealer, then quickly counted his chips, and got ready for the next hand.

Break Time; Love Takes Lead, Kroon Snatches it Back, Many Notables Bust

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Mark Kroon
Mark Kroon

Level six is now complete and the players are heading on a 20-minute breka.

The final Day 2 of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event saw the surviving players from Day 1c - all 2,306 of them - take to the felt spread across the Amazon, Brasilia and Pavilion Rooms.

Everyone's eyes would be on the many notables throughout as well as those sitting high on the chip leader board as UFC Announcer Bruce Buffer kicked the day off with a bellowing shuffle up and deal. 2006 World Champion Jamie Gold would find himself seated alongside 6th place finisher Richard Lee, but it would unfortunately be Day 1c chip leader Mark "P0kerHo" Kroon relinquishing his lead to Imari Love who finished the level with roughly 228,000. However as the level came to a close, Kroon would river trip sixes with his {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs} to soar back up to 260,000 to end the level as top dog.

A hand in the Amazon Purple section would last roughly 15 minutes after Dutch player Pieter de Korver went into the tank for 12 minutes on the river before table mate Daniel Negreanu called time. Another hand from the Amazon Room would also cause a stir after a three-way six-bet hand between Jake Cody, Manuel Bevand and Vee Lee would see queens, queens and kings all get tabled!

Speaking of Negreanu, he would grind his short stack through to break, but the likes of David Sands, Brian Hastings, Barbara Enright, Maria Ho, Sam Trickett and Ben Yu would all be sent to the rail alongside Tom Dwan who lost {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} to Nicholas Vannewkirk's {J-Spades}{J-Hearts} to be eliminated.

As the remaining players enjoy some fresh air, refuel on coffee and snacks, you at home can watch a video Sarah Grant recorded with comedian Ray Romano yesterday.

Hellmuth Rakes in Three-Bet Pot

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Phil Hellmuth is slowly chipping up.
Phil Hellmuth is slowly chipping up.

Phil Hellmuth opened to 1,800 from middle position, and the cutoff called. The button three-bet to 3,700, and Hellmuth called, as did the cutoff.

Hellmuth decided to lead out on the {7-Spades}{q-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop, betting 5,000. The cutoff folded, while the button began thinking.

"I'll take this one, you take the next one," Hellmuth said.

His opponent finally folded {a-}{k-} face-up, and Hellmuth quickly mucked his cards.

Laura Green (left) and Scott Born (far right)

Laura Green and Scott Born are both located on Table 429 here in the Amazon Room.

So?

They're both from Woodstock, Georgia.

So?

Well they are actually here on their honeymoon and have somehow managed to be seated on the same table for Day 2.

Speaking to the Tournament Director, he indicated that since the tournament is underway there is no need to separate them, and so far it appears that they are enjoying seated on the same table as they are happily chatting away with each other and other players.
