Gathy's Running Quads!

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante
Michael Gathy
Michael Gathy

We were just called over to Table 19 by a gentleman, who let us know how recent bracelet winner, Michael Gathy, had taken out a player, quads over quads. Gathy held {q-}{q-} and his opponent had {8-}{8-}, with the two betting hard on every street, as the board ran out {8-}{8-}{10-}{q-}{q-}.

That’s right, Gathy hit running queens, to defeat his opponent, as he races up to 9,700 in chips.

Calcagno Rivers A Straight

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante

We caught a hand with California-based tournament player Joel Calcagno, who already has two cashes at the WSOP this year. Calcagno, who is celebrating a birthday today, said he would like nothing more than to beat the 2,500+ field for the gold bracelet.

Calcagno limped-in preflop while in early position, and was called by the small blind and big blind. The flop came {2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. The opponent in the small blind bet 125, the big blind folded and Calcagno called. On the turn came the {7-Spades}, and the small blind lead out again for 300. Calcagno called.

On the {4-Diamonds} river, both players checked, and Calcagno announced, "Straight," as he tabled {a-Spades}{3-Spades}. He had a nut flush draw going into the river, and ended up hitting a wheel instead. His opponent quietly mucked as the action continued.

Smith Runs Into Quads!

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante
Gavin Smith (earlier in the series)
Gavin Smith (earlier in the series)

Gavin Smith opened to 125 from under the gun, before his opponent to his left, bumped it up to 275. The action folded back around to Smith, who made the call, as both players saw the flop come {j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Both checked, as the {6-Diamonds} fell on the turn. Smith checked, as his opponent led out for 425, which was called.

The river brought the {10-Diamonds}, before Smith slid out a bet of over 5,000 in chips, which had his opponent covered, who snap called the bet.

Smith tabled his {q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for a rivered flush, but had lost the hand against his opponent, who quickly tabled his {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} for quad threes.

“Four threes?” said Smith, looking over at his opponent’s hand. “Very nice,” he added.

“Great flop, great run out,” replied his opponent, who welcomed the double up.

Sick Beat for Buchanan

Nível 2 : 25/50, 0 ante

We caught the action on a jack-high flop when an unknown player got his stack of around 1,700 in and received a call from WSOP Circuit regular Austin Buchanan, who had the bigger stack by just 50 in chip. The unknown player turned over {a-}{j-} for top pair and top kicker, but it was no good as Buchanan held the {q-}{q-} overpair.

Unfortunately for Buchanan, who is donning a bright orange Miami Dolphins hoodie, the dealer burned and turned a {J-} to give his opponent trips. Buchanan remained silent but was far from content with the sudden turn of events. The river was a blank and Buchanan was crippled before being eliminated a short time later.
