Day 2 Action About to Kick Off

Eugene Katchalov (Day 1) Starts the Day 4th in Chips
Eugene Katchalov (Day 1) Starts the Day 4th in Chips

Welcome back to our ongoing coverage of the 2013 World Series of Poker. It's Day 2 for Event #19: $5,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em here in the Amazon room and just 77 of the original 195 entrants are returning for second day play. After eight levels on Day 1, it's 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event champion Dimitar Danchev who leads the field.

This $5,000 buy-in event drew a field of poker's elite to the felt. While many came with the hopes of attaining WSOP fame and glory, a vast majority of them disappeared on the first day of play. Players like Daniel Negreanu, Scott Seiver, Mickey Petersen, Christian Harder, Phil Hellmuth, Brock Parker, John Juanda, Scott Clements, Phil Ivey, and Brian Rast were all felted before the first eight levels came to a close.

With that being said, most of the field is still stacked with notable names in the poker world. Joining Danchev toward the top of the counts are Ted Lawson (91,000), Eugene Katchalov (87,000), Kristijonas Andrulis (72,300), Dan Kelly (67,200), Jason Somerville (66,200), Jason Mercier (59,500), Nick Jivkov (59,300), and 2005 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Hachem (54,600).

We expect an action packed day here in the tan section of the Amazon room, so be sure to stay tuned here for all of the latest updates from the felt!

Volpe Wasn't Feeling Good About It...Until the River

Nível 9 : 400/800, 0 ante
Noah Schwartz
Noah Schwartz

When we arrived at Table 365 in the Tan Section of the Amazon Room to see that Noah Schwartz was all in and at risk for around 40,000 holding {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}, and he was in great shape to double through Paul Volpe, who was dominated with {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}.

Schwartz remained ahead on the flop ({q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}) and on the turn ({5-Spades}), but the {a-Spades} spiked on the river to give Volpe a winning pair of aces. Schwartz threw his hands in the air in disgust, bid his former tablemates adieu, and exited the tournament area.

"You Barry Greenstein'ed him," Bryan Piccioli told Volpe, referring to The Bear's iconic book Ace on the River.

"I wasn't feeling good about it," Volpe admitted. "Until the river."

Hennigan Doubles Through Vitkind

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
John Hennigan
John Hennigan

Dmitry Vitkind raised to 4,000 from middle position before the flop and action trickled around the table to John Hennigan who tossed out a call from the big blind.

The flop came {5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades} and Hennigan checked. Vitkind continued out for 4,500 and Hennigan flat called to see a turn. The dealer dropped down the {5-Clubs}, pairing the board on fourth street, and Hennigan checked once again. Vitkind fired what looked like 8,800 and Hennigan moved all in over the top. Vitkind instantly called.

Vitkind: {A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}
Hennigan: {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Hennigan was behind with his trip fives to Vitkind's flopped wheel, but Hennigan was able to fill up as the {3-Spades} hit the river, allowing him to scoop up the pot. He now has about 76,000 while Vitkind has fallen to 54,000.

Volpe Triple Barrel Bluffs

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Paul Volpe - Doesn't have it
Paul Volpe - Doesn't have it

Mike Linster checked to Paul Volpe on a flop of {9-Spades}{k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}, and Volpe tossed out 4,200. Linster called.

The turn was the {3-Clubs}, Linster checked again, and Volpe tossed out another 11,300. Linster tank-called.

The river was the {5-Diamonds}, Linster checked a third and final time, and Volpe announced, "All in."

The all-in bet was for 29,400, and Linster mulled the decision over for quite some time before folding the suicide king ({k-Hearts}) face up.

"You have it, Toft?" Mark Herm asked Volpe, who shook his head no.

Volpe showed {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for ace-high, and raked in the pot.

Kitai KOs Hachem

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Joe Hachem - Eliminated
Joe Hachem - Eliminated

The 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champion has fallen. Davidi Kitai opened with a raise under the gun to an unknown amount and it folded around to Joe Hachem who bumped it up to 12,000 from the button. Action came back to Kitai and he announced a four-bet to 41,000. Hachem announced an all in and Kitai called, though it was actually Hachem who was at risk.

"I hope you have ace-king," remarked Hachem before the cards were turned up.

Kitai did not have ace-king, but rather {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} which was crushing Hachem's {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}.

The flop came down {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and Hachem picked up outs to make a diamond flush to take control of the hand. Unfortunately for the Main Event champion, it was not meant to be as the {8-Spades} hit the turn and the {J-Hearts} the river, ensuring that he would be eliminated from play. Kitai scooped up the pot and is now sitting on about 98,000.

On the other side of the room, Matt O'Donnell was eliminated from play in unknown action.

Kevin Vandersmissen (Day 1) doubles
Kevin Vandersmissen (Day 1) doubles

Kevin Vandersmissen raised to 4,800 from early position, Benjamin Volpe flatted on his direct left, and the rest of the players folded. The dealer fanned {9-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, Vandersmissen checked, and Volpe fired out 6,500. Vandersmissen check-raised to 15,000, Volpe bet the pot, Vandersmissen moved all in for 59,700, and Volpe called for a few extra thousand more.

Vandersmissen: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Volpe: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Volpe held a monster draw, but the turn and river bricked off {j-Clubs}, {k-Hearts} respectively. Vandersmissen doubled to 123,000 chips, while Volpe only has 9,600.

Dan Kelly (Day 1)
Dan Kelly (Day 1)

Dan Kelly was all in and at risk preflop holding {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}, and Jesse Martin had him covered with {a-Spades}{k-Spades}.

Kelly was free rolling after the flop fell {5-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, and the {a-Diamonds} on the turn gave both players the same pair. The {j-Hearts} spiked on the river, giving Kelly his flush, and he doubled to 73,000 chips.

Martin fell to 170,000.

Somerville and Rabstov Bust

Jason Somerville
Jason Somerville

When we reached the table, Dario Minieri checked to Jason Somerville on a board of {6-Clubs}{j-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. Somerville tossed out 6,000, Minieri check-raised to 16,000, and Somerville made the call.

The {10-Spades} completed the board, Minieri led out for 37,500, and Somerville went deep into the tank.

"I don't think I can fold," Somerville finally said after a few minutes of silence, calling.

"Flush," Minieri announced, showing {a-Spades}{7-Spades}.

"That'll do," Somerville told him, sending his cards spiraling into the muck.

Minieri chipped up to to 280,000 chips, while Somerville slipped to 38,000 and busted soon after when he ran {9-}{9-} into Minieri's {J-}{j-}. On an adjacent table, Kirill Rabtsov was also eliminated by Matt Marafioti.

Danchev and Herm Butt Heads

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Dimitar Danchev
Dimitar Danchev

After being crippled by Eugene Katchalov, Takashi Ogura hit the rail in 29th place. That means we are now on the stone bubble, but before hand-for-hand play officially began, Dimitar Danchev and Mark Herm got involved in a massive pot.

We reached the table on the river of a {3-Spades}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} board. Danchev checked, Herm fired out 27,500, and Danchev potted it, moving all in for 113,000. Herm tanked for well over five minutes, standing up, sitting down, standing up, sitting down, standing up, and then finally sitting down once more. He sipped on his Red Bull and stared at the 2013 PCA Main Event winner, who sat silently with one hand on his cheek.

Herm eventually folded, and Danchev pulled in the pot.

Kelly Doubles as Bubble Drags On

Nível 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Dan Kelly
Dan Kelly

Dan Kelly raised to 6,000 in middle position, Jesse Martin three-bet to 16,000 out of the small blind, and Kelly thought for a very long time before moving all in for 43,000. Martin called.

Kelly: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Martin: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}

The tens held as the board came {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, and Kelly doubled.

The level was scheduled to change moments ago, but since we are on the bubble the limits will remain the same and the clock will continue to run. Once we burst the bubble, the limits will increase.
