Straight Over Straight Allows Merson to Double Big

Greg Merson
Greg Merson

Greg Merson raised to 400,000 from middle position only to have Wilfried Harig three-bet to 960,000 from the button. The blinds both got out of the way and Merson made the call.

Both players proceeded to check the {8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop, bringing about the {J-Spades} turn. Merson led out for 1.05 million, Harig called, and the {5-Hearts} peeled off on the river. Merson took a moment before announcing that he was all in for 8.385 million, and Harig snap-called.

Merson slapped down {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for the nuts, and his cheering section erupted; meanwhile, a shell-shocked Harig revealed {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for the inferior nine-high straight.

Percy Mahatan Eliminated in 16th Place ($369,026)

Percy Mahatan - 16th Place
Percy Mahatan - 16th Place

Percy Mahatan opened with a raise to 430,000 from the hijack seat and got a single caller in Robert Salaburu in the big blind. The flop came {K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Salaburu checked, and when Mahatan fired a continuation bet, Salaburu stuck around. The turn then brought the {7-Hearts} and an all-in push from Salaburu, which Mahatan called.

Salaburu: {9-Spades}{7-Spades}
Mahatan: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Salaburu's turned two pair were best, and after the {4-Clubs} river they remained so. Mahatan is out in 16th, having earned $369,026 for his Main Event run.

Robert Buckenmayer Eliminated in 17th Place ($369,026)

Robert Buckenmayer
Robert Buckenmayer

Wilfried Harig raised to 400,000 from early position only to have Robert Buckenmayer move all in from the small blind. The big blind got out of the way and Harig made the call.

Showdown
Buckenmayer: {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}
Harig: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Buckenmayer was in bad shape and in need of some help, but he would find none as the board ran out {4-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Spades}{9-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. With that, Buckenmayer was eliminated in 17th place. That means just two players remaining in the field are over the age of 40 in Steven Gee and Michael Esposito.

David Balkin Eliminated in 18th Place ($369,026)

David Balkin - 18th Place
David Balkin - 18th Place

In the first hand after the two-table redraw, David Balkin raised to 425,000 from middle position and was called by Michael Esposito. The {8-Spades}{K-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop saw Balkin bet 625,000, Esposito call, and the {Q-Clubs} appear on the turn.

This time Balkin checked, and Esposito fired out 925,000. Balkin responded by moving all in and Esposito snap-called.

Showdown
Esposito: {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Balkin: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

Balkin no doubt thought he had the best hand, but Esposito had nailed the flop and was a huge favorite; in fact, Balkin needed the case ace to stay alive. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {Q-Spades}, putting an end to the Australian's deep run in 18th place.

Jamie Robbins Eliminated in 19th Place ($294,601)

Jamie Robbins - 19th Place
Jamie Robbins - 19th Place

From under the gun, Jamie Robbins raised to 500,000 on the outer table. Action folded over to Jacob Balsiger on the button and he reraised to 1.2 million. Play folded through the blinds and back to Robbins. He called to take a flop.

The dealer rolled out the {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and Robbins checked. Balsiger checked behind to see the {10-Diamonds} come on the turn. Robbins moved all in for approximately 2.9 million and Balsiger made the call.

Robbins turned up the {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for a flush draw and straight draw. Balsiger held the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} for a set of nines.

Needing a queen or a diamond that didn't pair the board, Robbins' tournament life hung in the balance. After the dealer dealt the {3-Spades} on the river, Balsiger's hand held up and he sent Robbins out the door.

Robbins — who finished in 11th place in the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event for $896,730 — took home $294,601 for his 19th-place result here in 2012.

And with that, the field is down to just 18 players and a redraw will be made. PokerNews will have that for you shortly. The remaining competitors are now earning at least $369,026.

Paul Volpe Eliminated in 20th Place ($294,601)

Paul Volpe - 20th Place
Paul Volpe - 20th Place

On the first hand of the level, Steven Gee open-raised all in from the cutoff for around 4 million, Danny Wong reraised all in from the button for a little less than 8 million, and Paul Volpe called from the small blind with his last 3.5 million or so. Robert Salaburu folded, and the three players tabled their hands:

Paul Volpe: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Steven Gee: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Danny Wong: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

The flop came {5-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, giving Gee an open-ended straight draw. The turn was the {J-Clubs}, and Wong still was in the lead. The river then brought the {4-Clubs}, giving Gee his straight and a big boost to his stack. Meanwhile, Volpe is out in 20th.

One more elimination and they will redraw to the final two tables.

Robert Corcione Eliminated in 21st Place ($294,601)

Robert Corcione - 21st Place
Robert Corcione - 21st Place

After Scott Abrams raised to 340,000 from early position, Robert Corcione reraised all in for around 4.3 million from the button. Action folded back to Abrams and he called with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Corcione was at risk with the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}.

The flop put Abrams in front when the {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{3-Clubs} fell. The turn {8-Hearts} gave Corcione some more hope with a straight draw, but the {8-Spades} on the river wasn't what he needed. Corcione was eliminated in 21st place and took home $294,601.

Cylus Watson Eliminated in 22nd Place ($294,601)

Cylus Watson - 22nd Place
Cylus Watson - 22nd Place

A short-stacked Cylus Watson moved all in preflop for 920,000 and received a call from Greg Merson.

Showdown
Watson: {A-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}
Merson: {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Watson got it all in with the best hand, but oftentimes that's not enough. Unfortunately for Watson, that'd be the case in this hand as the {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop delivered Merson a pair of tens and the lead. Neither the {Q-Hearts} turn nor {2-Diamonds} river would help Watson, and he shook hands with the table before taking his leave in 22nd place.

Yuval Bronshtein Eliminated in 23rd Place ($294,601)

Yuval Bronshtein - 23rd Place

Yuval Bronshtein opened from under the gun for 365,000 and the table quickly folded around to Jeremy Ausmus in the small blind who spent some time studying Bronshtein's remaining stack of chips.

Ausmus then reraised all in, and Gaelle Baumann quickly folded from the big blind. Bronshtein took off his sunglasses to look over at Ausmus and his chips. Ausmus had him slightly covered, and so Bronshtein took his time to consider his decision. As the minutes passed, all of the other players walked away from the table.

Bronshtein put his head down for a short while, covering his face as he thought. Finally he looked up and said he was calling. The players tabled their cards…

Ausmus: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Bronshtein: {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}

Ausmus stood and Bronshtein sat as the flop brought three hearts — {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts} — thus removing a couple of Bronshtein's outs. The turn then brought the {6-Hearts}, giving Ausmus a flush and making the river ace no matter.

Daniel Strelitz Eliminated in 24th Place ($294,601)

Daniel Strelitz - 24th Place
Daniel Strelitz - 24th Place

Scott Abrams opened to 340,000 on the button, Daniel Strelitz three-bet to 720,000 from the small blind, and Abrams four-bet to 1.25 million. Strelitz five-bet jammed for 6.5 million, and Abrams snapped it off.

Abrams: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Strelitz: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}

"King!" Abrams' railbirds shouted.

There was a king in the window as the flop fell {5-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}, giving Abrams a commanding lead in the hand. Strelitz was drawing dead when the {9-Spades} turned, and the {9-Hearts} completed the board.

Strelitz, who started the day second in chips, was eliminated in 24th place, while Abrams is up above 16 million chips.
