Once Around With Table #369

Johnny Chan Seated at a Stacked Table
Johnny Chan Seated at a Stacked Table

Ever wonder what happens in between the many giant confrontational hands that we post? It's a grind for most of the players out there and consistently being able to win small pots is crucial for tournament success. We found a table stacked with notable names and decided to follow this table for one orbit around the table. Here are our findings:

SeatPlayerChips To Start Orbit
Seat 4Dag Martin Mikkelsen120,000
Seat 5Shannon Shorr52,000
Seat 6Andy Frankenberger41,300
Seat 8Johnny Chan28,500
Seat 9Randy Lew107,000

Hand 1 - Randy Lew had the button. Dag Martin Mikkelsen raised to 1,800 from early position and received calls from Shannon Shorr, an unknown opponent, and Johnny Chan from the cutoff. The blinds folded and the flop came down {10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}.

Mikkelsen put out a continuation bet of 4,700 and just like that three hands were sent sailing into the muck.

Hand 2 - Andy Frankenberger raised to 2,200 from under the gun plus one. It folded around to the player on the button who three-bet to 5,000. Action was back on Frankenberger and he folded his hand.

Hand 3 - Johnny Chan opened to 1,800 and received a call from the button. The two were heads up to see a flop of {10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. Both checked and the {8-Clubs} came on fourth street. Chan bet out 2,800 and his opponent called.

The board completed with the {J-Clubs} and Chan tossed out a 5,000 bet. His opponent folded and Chan took down the pot.

Hand 4 - Randy Lew opened to 1,800 and received one call from Dag Martin Mikkelsen on in the small blind. The flop was {10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} and Lew continued for 2,400. Mikkelsen folded and Lew took down the pot.

Hand 5 - Action folded to Dag Martin Mikkelsen's button and he raised it up to 1,800. Shannon Shorr folded his small blind and Frankenberger followed suit from the big.

Hand 6 - Randy Lew raised to 1,800 only to have Dag Martin Mikkelsen three-bet to 4,500 from the cutoff. Action was back on Lew and he thought for about thirty seconds before letting go of his cards.

Hand 7 - Action folded around to the small blind who completed. Johnny Chan checked his option from the big blind and the flop came {9-Spades}{A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. They both checked and did so once again on the {Q-Clubs} turn. Fifth street was the {6-Spades} and both checked for a third time. Chan's opponent showed {K-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for a rivered pair of sixes and Chan mucked.

Hand 8 - Shannon Shorr made it 1,800 from the hijack and Andy Frankenberger called from the cutoff. Johnny Chan and Randy Lew folded from their blinds and the flop came {4-Spades}{5-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Shorr continued for 2,900 and Frankenberger shook his head and mucked his hand.

Hand 9 - Johnny Chan had the button. Shannon Shorr raised to 1,800 and action folded around, awarding him the pot.

So there you have it. Nothing too substantial and a lot of raise and takes. This is fairly standard for long winded and deep stacked tournament play. Mikkelsen was the victor from this orbit, however, increasing his stack by a solid 18,000 in chips.

Allen Gains Chips, Seeks Calm

There was 11,300 in the middle, four players in the hand, and the board showed {J-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Jeremy Allen checked from the small blind as did his neighbor in the big blind. A player in middle position then bet 5,800, prompting the player in late position to push all in for 22,300 total. Allen called the all-in bet, then watched as the big blind reraised all in himself for significantly more.

The middle position player quickly folded, but Allen was considering calling. A count of the latest all-in shove was being conducted — it turned out to be 84,000 — but before it was completed Allen said it didn't matter and made the call.

Allen tabled {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a flush draw, but was in not-so-good shape versus the big blind's {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts} (a better flush draw) and the short-stacked player's {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} (a set of sevens). But the turn brought the {Q-Clubs} and river the {9-Spades} — Allen had lost the smaller main pot, but had won the bigger side pot (and knocked out a player) with his pair of queens.

A standing Allen readjusted his cowboy hat and exhaled after the hand. "I need to calm down after that one, know what I mean?" he said.

Moreno Loses To Rivera's Flush

On the final board of {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}, former World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Anthony Rivera bet 9,000 into Andrew Moreno. Moreno took some time to think it over and then called.

Rivera turned over the {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} as he was saying, "I have a flush." Moreno saw the five diamonds and mucked his hand.

Kelly Killing It

JP Kelly on Day 1c of the Main Event
JP Kelly on Day 1c of the Main Event

When we arrived at JP Kelly's the table, the Brit, from the big blind position, and one opponent were already involved in a hand on a {j-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop. Kelly checked here and then called the bet of 800 from his opponent. A {7-Clubs} was then slapped on the turn and Kelly opted to check. His opponent again fired out a bet, this time of 1,300. Kelly check-raised here, making it 3,800. A call and the dealer would turn over the final card on the board.

River: {k-Clubs}

Kelly quickly bet 6,600 and his opponent made the call even quicker. When Kelly turned over {7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, his opponent's cards flew into the muck and Kelly scooped up the pot.

Trip Kings For Hellman

Action folded around to the cutoff who limped for 800. The button folded and the small blind completed. Erik Hellman made it 2,400 to go from the big blind and the limper called. The small blind folded and we were heads up to the flop.

The dealer produced a flop of {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Hellman continued out for 2,400. Hellman's opponent raised to 5,000 and Hellman quickly called. The {Q-Spades} turned and both players checked. The {k-Diamonds} came on fifth street and once again they both checked.

Hellman showed {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} for flopped top pair that became trips on the river. His opponent mucked and Hellman took down the pot.

Chan Chips Up Against Mikkelsen

Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan

Dag Martin Mikkelsen opened for 1,800 from early position and found one caller in Johnny Chan from the cutoff seat.

The flop came {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Mikkelsen c-bet for 2,700. Chan quickly called.

Both players checked the {J-Spades} turn, however, when Mikkelsen checked again on the {3-Diamonds} river, Chan flung two orange chips into the middle for a 10,000 bet. Mikkelsen snap-folded and Chan scooped the pot.

Blombarded

Viktor Blom opened with a raise to 1,800 from early position, then a player in the cutoff reraised to 6,500. It folded to the big blind who called the reraise rather quickly, and after taking a look at both of his opponents, Blom called as well.

The flop came {K-Spades}{8-Hearts}{8-Spades}. It checked to the cutoff who fired 10,000, the big blind called instantly, and Blom didn't take too much time before calling as well. The turn brought the {5-Diamonds}, and checks all around.

The river was the {7-Diamonds}. This time the big blind — again, without much pause before acting — bet 20,000, and Blom waited about five seconds before calling. The player in the cutoff only had a little more than that behind, and after thinking for a while let his hand go.

The big blind showed {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs} for kings and eights, but Blom had {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for trips to take the pot.

"You had queens?" Blom asked the cutoff, who responded by insisting he had aces. "No way," said Blom. "You don't raise that much with aces," he added with a grin.

Blom has further reason to smile, having bounced back up over 180,000.
