Adrian Mateos Leads Final 6 in PCA Main Event

Nível 27 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Adrian Mateos had just 11 big blinds starting the last level of the night. Thirteen hands later, the day was done and the Spanish 3-time bracelet winner lead the remaining 6 players. Besides Mateos, avid poker players Koray Aldemir, Shawn Buchanon, and Maria Lampropulos will return to the center stage on the final day of the event, as do short stacks Daniel Coupal and Christian Rudolph.

The penultimate day of the 2018 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure started with 16 players remaining and David Peters in the lead.

Short stack Phillip Corion ran jacks into aces early on and would not find what he so desperately needed; the board stayed clear of jacks. Florian Maurer (sixes into ace-queen) and first-time live player Jean Ateba (sevens into trip kings) left shortly after.

Meanwhile, high stakes regular Koray Aldemir doubled through Shawn Buchanan with set over set to grab the chip lead. As Bartosz Stasiewicz (king-queen into nines) exited, Aldemir got even richer. He flopped a flush against Jonathan West's flopped two-pair. They both got all their chips in, and West failed to improve to a full house, getting Aldemir up to 5.5 million in chips.

Besides Aldemir, two more high rollers were going deep. Spanish sensation Adrian Mateos and American David Peters often faced off in tournament buy-ins of $50,000 and more, and now battled deep in the main event. Peters started the day as the man in charge, but on Day 5 nothing worked for him. He lost some smaller pots and doubled Mateos with nines against ace-three, with Mateos hitting an ace on the flop to stay alive. A failed hero-call with ace-queen high set Peters back even further, only for him to fall the next hand with ace-jack to ace-king.

Michael Farrow hit the rail next, losing a blind battle with fives to ace-ten.

With just nine players remaining, the final redraw of the tournament was in order. Combined to a single table, Koray Aldemir was still the heavy favorite with almost 6 million in chips while his nearest competitor, Maria Lampropulos, had "just" 3 million.

In hand 11 of the final table of 9, Patryk Poterek lost the last of his chips. The Polish player lost with queens to Lampropulos' ace-king after she flopped trips. With Poterek eliminated, the final table of 8 was officially set. Still, play continued as the goal was to get down to 6 players.

Aldemir went on a little bit of a cold streak as he lost pot after pot. Oleg Titov was the most significant beneficiary as Aldemir check-raised all in with ace-seven against him on a five-seven-eight board. Titov wasn't afraid calling with queens, and as no ace or seven appeared on the turn or river, he was right back in it. Meanwhile, Lampropulos didn't seem able to lose a hand and took over the lead, getting her stack up to 5 million while Aldemir dropped down to 3.7.

Lampropulos and Aldemir tangled for a bit, before Shawn Buchanan overtook the lead.

At the start of Level 28, Mateos had 11 big blinds, making him one of the shortest stacks in the tournament. Ten hands later, he was the chipleader. He first doubled with ace-queen to Adalfer Morales Gamarra's king-queen and busted his Colombian neighbor the next hand winning with top-pair against a gutshot. A hand with kings where he got two streets of value of Aldemir, including a pot bet on the river, saw him surge to the top of the ranking.

Oleg Titov didn't see a picture card for just about 3 hours. With no real hands to do anything with, he was blinded down to just two big blinds. In the end, the Russian highlight of the table got it in with king-deuce to Daniel Coupal's ace-jack. Titov would not overcome the ace on the flop and exited in 7th place.

After a long day in the Bahamas, six players remain in the 2018 PCA Main Event with 51 minutes left in the 40,000/80,000 level. Mateos leads with Christian Rudolph as the shortest stack. Can Mateos grab his second PokerStars Main Event title? Check back in on Sunday at 3:30 local time to see the conclusion of the PCA Main Event.

Hand 103: Daniel Coupal held the {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades} on the button and moved all in for 890,000. Russia's Oleg Titov called off for 245,000 from the small blind with the {k-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and needed some help to stay alive.

The {2-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop paired both players, but Titov was still trailing. The {3-Hearts} turn was no help to him, and neither was the {8-Spades} river.

Adalfer Gamarra - 8th Place

Hand 94: Adalfer Morales Gamarra raised to 180,000 with the {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} on the button and Adrian Mateos three-bet to 500,000 from the small blind with the {k-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Daniel Coupal folded from the big blind and Gamarra called to see a {j-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop.

Gamarra checked and then snap-called off for 1,080,000 when Mateos moved all in. Gamarra was the statistical favorite with two overs and an open-ender, but the {A-Diamonds} turn made Mateos a 2-1 favorite. The {A-Clubs} river was yet another blank, making Mateos' pair of eights, with the pair of aces on the board the best hand and he took down the big pot, while Gamarra was eliminated from the tournament in 8th place.

For his run Gamarra will collect $116,860.

Hands #82-87: Buchanan Takes Over the Chip Lead

Nível 27 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Shawn Buchanan
Shawn Buchanan

Hand #82: From early position, Adrian Mateos looks down at {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and he moved all in for 995,000. Action folds around to the small blind where Koray Aldemir took a look at {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} and he decided to fold, avoiding the coin flip. In the big blind Maria Lampropulos folded her {5-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Mateos scooped the pot.

Hand #83: Daniel Coupal looked down at {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} in early position and he moved all in for 610,000. Everyone folded and Coupal took down the pot.

Hand #84: On the button Maria Lampropulos opened with a raise to 135,000 holding {10-Spades}{6-Hearts}. Adalfer Morales Gamarra called from the big blind holding {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}.

The flop comes down {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Gamarra checked. Lampropulos puts out a continuation bet of 130,000 and Gamarra let go of his hand.

Hand #85: Koray Aldemir opened with {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} from the hijack seat to 130,000. Adrian Mateos called from the big blind holding {K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

The flop came down {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and Mateos checked. Aldemir bet 110,000 and Mateos promptly folded.

Hand #86: Shawn Buchanan limped in from the cutoff holding {9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Adrian Mateos followed suit with {J-Spades}{9-Diamonds} from the small blind. Daniel Coupal moved all in from the big blind holding {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and both players promptly folded.

Hand #87: From early position, Maria Lampropulos opened with a raise to 135,000 with {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}. Shawn Buchanan was in the hijack seat and he just called with {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}.

The flop came down {K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and Lampropulos was first to act. She checked to Buchanan who fired a bet of 100,000. Lampropulos called.

The turn was the {A-Diamonds} and Lampropulos checked again. Buchanan fired 325,000. Lampropulos called again.

On the {6-Hearts} river, Lampropulos checked for a third time. Buchanan fired off a bet of 850,000. Lampropulos thought for a while, but eventually settled on folding and Buchanan took down the pot and with that, assumed the chip lead as well.

Hand 11: Maria Lampropulos looked down at the {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} under the gun and she raised to 90,000. Two spots over, Poterek picked up the {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and three-bet to 265,000. Action folded back to Lampropulos and she thought for nearly three minutes before someone called the clock.

Eventually, she moved all in and Poterek called off for 1.62 million. It was a classic flip, and Poterek was looking to hold to double big. The {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop was gin for Lampropulos, who hit trips. Poterek was looking for a lady, but he didn't get it on the {2-Spades} turn.

He had the river to go, but it was brick city as the {5-Clubs} peeled off. With that, Lampropulos becomes the first female to make the PCA final table since Xuan Liu did it back in 2012.

It folded to Michael Farrow in the small blind and he shoved for 535,000. Adalfer Morales Gamarra in the big blind tanked for a bit before he announced the call.

Michael Farrow: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Adalfer Morales Gamarra: {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The flop came {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} was still good for Farrow, but the {A-Spades} on the turn paired his opponent and left him trailing. The {10-Hearts} completed the board and Farrow exited in 10th place.

Down to nine players now and the unofficial final table. The remaining players are guaranteed $92,020.

From early postion, David Peters moved all in for 505,000. Action folded around where Daniel Coupal called from the blinds.

Peters: {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}
Coupal: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{K-Spades}{J-Hearts} which left Peters drawing dead on the turn. With that, the one-time chip leader was sent to the rail in 11th place. Peters will collect $75,640 for his finish.

Action folded to Jonathan West in the small blind and he limped in. Koray Aldemir raised to 100,000 from the big blind and West called.

West tapped the table on {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and Aldemir bet 90,000. West announced a raise, making it a massive 600,000 with about 800,000 behind.

Aldemir took his time and eventually shoved all in. West called.

Jonathan West: {7-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Koray Aldemir: {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

The {K-Hearts} on the turn was a blank and while the {8-Diamonds} on the river paired the board, it wasn't the card West was looking for.

The rich just got richer, while West had to settle for 12th place, netting him $63,220. The remaining 11 players are now guaranteed $75,640.

In the first hand back from the break, Action folded to the short-stacked Bartosz Stasiewicz on the button and he moved all in for right around 285,000. Shawn Buchanan, the second-shortest stack among the remaining players, then three-bet all in over the top from the small blind. That got Michael Farrow to fold from the big and the hands were turned up.

Stasiewicz: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Buchanan: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

It was a flip, but Stasiewicz needed to improve to stay alive. Unfortunately for him, that proved easier said than done as the board ran out a dry {5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{a-Spades}.

Set Over Set Propels Aldemir Into the Lead

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Koray Aldemir from Day 3 of the Main Event
Koray Aldemir from Day 3 of the Main Event

Christian Rudolph opened with a raise to 52,000 from the hijack seat. Koray Aldemir called from the cutoff, Bartosz Stasiewicz called from the button, Shawn Buchanan called from the small blind, and Michael Farrow also called from the big, creating a five-way pot heading to a flop.

The dealer rolled out the {K-Hearts}{8-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop and action checked all the way around. On the {3-Clubs} turn, action checked to Aldemir who put out a bet of 180,000. His only caller is Shawn Buchanan.

The river was the {4-Hearts} and Buchanan checks over to Aldemir. Aldemir fires again, betting a massive 480,000. Buchanan drops into the tank and thinks for several minutes before finally calling. Aldemir shows his {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} which is good as Buchanan turns over his {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for a lesser set. Fortunately for Buchanan, he was able to escape with his life, while Aldemir propelled to nearly 4 million chips.
