16 Remain But Only Eight Spots Available at the Final Table on Day 5

Michael Pinto
Michael Pinto

The 16 players who return on Day 5 of the €5,300 2022 PokerStars and Barcelona©Casino European Poker Tour Main Event at noon local time will all have one goal in common: make it to the final table.

The player with the best chance to do so is Michael Pinto. The Dutch native was on the fortunate end of a number of big hands on Day 4, including a one-outer on the river to crack aces, busting a player set over set, picking up aces over jacks in a nearly 8,000,000 chip pot, and kings over queens. He’ll take the chip lead into the final two tables with 11,090,000, having already far surpassed his career earnings of $18,295.

Kayhan Mokri of Norway has been on a fairytale journey through this record-shattering field of 2,294. He was the chip leader after Day 2, third after Day 3, and is now in second with 10,620,000. Patrik Jaros is in third place with 10,350,000. The three of them control nearly half the chips in play, with no player within 3,000,000 of them.

Further down the leaderboard are a number of accomplished pros seeking to track them down and set themselves up for a run at the final table. Scott Margereson scored a double knockout near the end of Day 4 to rocket up the counts and bring 7,185,000 into the day.

His fellow British pro Jack Salter is the most accomplished player remaining in the field, with more than $8.5 million in career live earnings. It’s been eight years since Salter finished runner-up to Antonio Buonanno at EPT Monte Carlo after one of the longest and most grueling heads-up duels in EPT history. He hasn’t been back at an EPT final table since but could change that today as he’ll unbag 1,660,000 when play resumes.

Italy’s Giuliano Bendinelli (5,885,000), Fabiano Kovalski of Brazil (4,540,000), and Frenchman Jimmy Guerrero (1,160,000), who finished third in Monte Carlo in 2016, are also still in the hunt.

Play will resume with 80:24 left on the clock in Level 28, with blinds at 40,000/80,000 and an 80,000 big blind ante. The remaining players are already guaranteed €67,790, with everyone at the final table earning at least €198,000 before one lucky player walks away with the €1,714,000 top prize and title of EPT Barcelona Main Event champion.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand providing updates as what was once the largest EPT field in history gets whittled down to the final table.

Guerrero Flops Straight to Double

Nível 28 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Jimmy Guerrero
Jimmy Guerrero

Jimmy Guerrero moved all in for 1,160,000 from early position and Michael Pinto called in the big blind.

Jimmy Guerrero: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Michael Pinto: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Guerrero was behind with live cards, but the dealer fanned out the {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} flop to instantly give Guerrero a straight as he jumped out of his seat at the sight of the fortunate flop. The {4-Hearts} turn locked up the pot for him, and the meaningless {q-Diamonds} river confirmed the Frenchman's double.

Tigran Harutyunyan
Tigran Harutyunyan

Scott Margereson opened to 175,000 from the cutoff and Tigran Harutyunyan moved all in for 1,245,000 on the button. Jimmy Guerrero then moved in his chips in from the small blind, and Margereson folded.

Tigran Harutyunyan: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Jimmy Guerrero: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

The {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop brought some chop outs, but the {6-Spades} turn and {4-Hearts} river kept Guerrero ahead with his superior kicker, and Harutyunyan was eliminated in 16th place for €67,790.

Jack Salter Eliminated in 15th Place (€81,450)

Nível 28 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Jack Salter
Jack Salter

Patrik Jaros raised to 160,000 from the button. Jack Salter, in the small blind, sat motionless for a few seconds before announcing he was all in for around 1,300,000. Jaros snap-called when action folded back around to him.

Jack Salter: {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Patrik Jaros: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

"I think I can do it," Salter said when he saw the amount of trouble he was in. The flop came {5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}, no help to Salter.

"King, then jack of clubs," Salter pleaded, but the turn instead came the {9-Hearts} and he was already drawing dead. The meaningless river came the {10-Spades} and Salter headed to the rail in 15th place.

Lucas Silva Rocha
Lucas Silva Rocha

Lucas Silva Rocha raised to 425,000 in the hijack, leaving only 220,000 behind, and Jimmy Guerrero raised in the big blind to put Rocha all in. Rocha called for his remaining chips.

Lucas Silva Rocha: {a-Spades}{5-Spades}
Jimmy Guerrero: {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}

The two were off to the races, and the {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop gave Rocha additional counterfeit outs. The {2-Diamonds} turn changed absolutely nothing, however, and the {8-Clubs} river confirmed the Brazilian's elimination as he shook hands with his opponents before embracing his rail while he made his exit in 14th place for €81,450.

Peterson Machado

Paul Fischill and Peterson Machado saw the {5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop in a limped pot from the blinds. Fischill checked the small blind and Machado shoved all in for 700,000.

Fischill snap-called and showed {5-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for a pair of fives and a flush draw. Machado had {9-Spades}{7-Spades} for a straight draw and needed to improve to keep his tournament hopes alive.

The board ran out {j-Hearts}{10-Spades} and Fischill's fives stayed ahead to send the Day 3 chip leader to the rail in 13th place.

Bruno Pega Eliminated in 12th Place (€97,650)

Bruno Pega
Bruno Pega

A hand after doubling up Maher Nouira, Bruno Pega shoved for his last 130,000 from under the gun and both Fabiano Kovalski and Paul Fischill called in the blinds.

Kovalski and Fischill checked down the {j-Spades}{q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Spades} board and Pega showed {a-Spades}{9-Clubs} for two pair, ace high. His opponents were both playing the board, Kovalski with {7-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Fischill with {8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, and Pega tripled up.

The next hand, Patrik Jaros raised to 200,000 from early position, then called when Pega moved all in again for 400,000 from the big blind.

Bruno Pega: {k-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Patrik Jaros: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

Jaros paired his seven on the {3-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop, and Pega got no help from the {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} turn and river and headed to the rail in 12th place.

Maher Nouira
Maher Nouira

Action folded to Maher Nouira who limped from the small blind and Fabiano Kovalski checked from the big blind.

The flop came {k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and Nouira check-called a bet of 150,000 from Kovalski.

The turn was the {j-Spades} and Nouira check-called another bet of 375,000 from Kovalski.

The {q-Clubs} completed the board and Nouira checked once more. Kovalski fired 700,000 and Nouira gave it some thought, using one of his time bank cards, then check-raised all in for 1,785,000.

Kovalski went deep into the tank, using multiple of his time bank cards, then tossed in chips signifying a call. Nouira turned over {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and Kovalski revealed {k-Hearts}{10-Spades} to win the pot with a pair of kings, eliminating Nouira in 11th place for €117,140.

Patrik Jaros raised to 240,000 from under the gun as action folded around to Valentin Cristea in the big blind. He tanked for a moment before shoving all in for 470,000 and Jaros quickly called.

Valentin Cristea: {k-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Patrik Jaros: {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

The {4-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop gave Cristea a pair of kings and the lead. "Bad news guys," Jaros told his tablemates with the final table within their grasp.

The {a-Spades} fell on the turn, improving Jaros to a pair, and Cristea suddenly found himself in need of help heading to the river to stay alive.

He instead got the {2-Diamonds} and shook the hand of each of his tablemates before making his exit in 10th place.

The remaining nine players are now drawing for seats at the final table.

Action folded to Kayhan Mokri in the small blind who shoved all in for 1,540,000 with {k-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Jimmy Guerrero in the big blind asked for a count before calling with {a-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}.

Mokri needed to improve and did on the {q-Spades}{2-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} flop, hitting a pair of kings. Now it was Guerrero who was looking for help but didn't find any on the {j-Hearts} turn or {q-Diamonds} river as Mokri stayed alive.
