John Juanda Eliminated in 23rd Place (AU$40,000)

Nível 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
John Juanda - 23rd Place
John Juanda - 23rd Place

After a very interesting three-way all in, John Juanda has been eliminated in 23rd place of the Aussie Millions Main Event.

It started when Andrew Phaedonos opened to 38,000 from under the gun. John Juanda three-bet to 101,000 in the cutoff, Jim Mourafas cold-called on the button, and Phaedonos called as well.

The dealer fanned {2-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, Phaedonos and Juanda both checked, and Mourafas fired out 206,000. Phaedonos called, Juanda moved all in for 407,000, and Mourafas called, leaving just 130,000 behind. Phaedonos called once again, and thinking Mourafas was also all in, Juanda tabled {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} for a pair of aces.

Quickly realizing his mistake Juanda turned his cards back face down, and the turn was dealt - {k-Diamonds}. Phaedonos moved all in for effectively 130,000 into a pot of over 1.5 million chips, and Mourafas tanked for a considerable amount of time before folding.

Phaedonos revealed {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a set of tens, Juanda re-opened his pocket aces, and the {k-Hearts} bricked off on the river.

As Juanda was collecting his things to leave he asked Mourafas what he had, but the Aussie shrugged it off, saying he didn't remember.

Análise de Mãos

This is a curious hand in which Jim Mourafas was presented with a unique set of circumstances that warranted his folding after having committed 80% of his chips. Seidel Soars Over a Million Chips

Nível 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Erik Seidel doubles

As the break began, Patrick Crivell and Erik Seidel were heads up on a flop of {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. Seidel led out for 250,000 into a pot of around 400,000, and Crivell tanked for nearly five minutes before calling.

The {3-Spades} completed the board, and Seidel sat silently for 30 seconds or so before announcing that he was all in. Crivell took much less time to make the call, committing 429,000 chips, and Seidel showed {q-Spades}{7-Spades} for queens and sevens.

Crivell flashed {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for a pair of kings and a bricked flush draw, and immediately left the table, forcing the dealer to pay off Seidel.

Jason Mercier Eliminated in 18th Place (AU$55,000)

Nível 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

The last Team PokerStars Pro in the field has been eliminated from the 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event.

It happened when Ami Barer opened for 40,000 under the gun and action folded around to Jason Mercier in the big blind. The Team Pro opted to move all in for 520,000 and Barer made the call.

Mercier: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Barer: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

Mercier was behind but had run well in similar situations throughout the tournament. Unfortunately for him, his luck ran out when the {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop delivered Barer a full house. Mercier needed running sevens to stay alive, but the {Q-Diamonds} turn took away any chance of that happening. The {2-Hearts} was run out on the river for good measure and then Mercier jetted across the room to register for the $100,000 Challenge.

O'Dea Spikes

Eoghan O'Dea
Eoghan O'Dea

Erik Seidel opened for a raise in the cutoff, Eoghan O'Dea moved all in for 518,000 on the button and both blinds released. Seidel made a quick call, showing {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, and O'Dea tabled {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}.

The Irishman was well behind but flopped backdoor straight and flush draws when the dealer fanned {5-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. The {2-Hearts} on the turn kept his backdoor wheel draw alive, giving him seven outs to survive, and the {a-Spades} on the river was one of them.

O'Dea doubled to over a million chips, while Seidel fell to a similar stack size.

Salvatore Fazzino Eliminated in 14th Place (AU$70,000)

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Salvatore Fazzino
Salvatore Fazzino

Salvatore Fazzino no doubt had high hopes at the start of the day (after all he was the chip leader), but those hopes were recently dashed courtesy of Sorel Mizzi.

In what would be Fazzino's final hand, Mizzi opened for 48,000 under the gun and received a call from Darren Rabinowitz in the cutoff. Denny Lewis then came along from the button and Fazzino, who had dwindled to a short stack, moved all in for 344,000 from the small blind. Mizzi made the call, the other two players folded, and the cards were turned up.

Mizzi: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Fazzino: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}

Mizzi was ahead with the big pocket pair, and that meant Fazzino's best shot at survival was to catch either an ace or spades. Unfortunately for the Perth contingent on the rail, their man was left drawing to running aces when the {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop gave Mizzi a set. The {5-Hearts} turn was the final nail in the coffin, and after the {7-Hearts} was run out on the river for good measure Fazzino took his leave in 14th place for AU$70,000.

Olympians David Wise, Katie Uhlaender, and Nick Goepper Discuss Enthusiasm for Poker

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Nick Goepper
Nick Goepper

The Winter Olympics in Sochi kicked off today, and Team USA will be out in full force hoping to bring home more gold medals than there are gold bracelets in several years’ worth of World Series of Poker editions. Many athletes competing at the Winter Games have worked hard to position themselves for Olympic glory, but they also enjoy competition outside of their respective sports, including playing poker.

Three of the Team USA Olympians — David Wise, Katie Uhlaender, and Nick Goepper — are a few of America’s best hopes for bringing home gold medals, and they aren’t shy about sharing their enthusiasm the game of poker. To them, poker may not require much physical athleticism, but it does require the same mental toughness that has helped push them to the forefront of their individual Olympic sports.

In a recent feature article on PokerNews, author Michael Friedman talked with Wise, Uhlaender, and Goepper. You can read the article by clicking here.

Jeff Rossiter Eliminated in 13th Place (AU$70,000)

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Jeff Rossiter - 13th Place
Jeff Rossiter - 13th Place

Jeff Rossiter was first to act on the four-handed outer table, and opened to 48,000. The action folded to Ami Barer in the big blind, and the Canadian three-bet to 114,000. Rossiter four-bet ripped, moving all in for 891,000, and Barer went into the tank.

Like he did in a previous hand against Jason Mercier, Barer started laughing to no one in particular. After racking his brain for a little longer Barer called, and the two were off to the races.

Rossiter: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Barer: {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Spectators flocked to the table when the tournament director announced that there was an all in and a call, and the dealer paused before delivering a flop of {q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. Barer snatched the lead away from Rossiter, but either player flinched.

The {2-Hearts} on the turn was a brick, leaving Rossiter with just two outs to survive, and unfortunately for the Aussie the {8-Spades} on the river was not one of them.

Rossiter exited in 13th place, earning AU$70,000, while Barer chipped up to nearly two million chips.

Balsiger Makes the Call

Jake Balsiger
Jake Balsiger

Jake Balsiger checked to Tam Truong on a flop of {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, and Truong tossed out 190,000. Balsiger called.

The turn was the {8-Clubs}, Balsiger knuckled again, and Truong fired out another 150,000. Balsiger again called.

The 2012 Octo-Niner checked a third and final time when the {a-Clubs} completed the board, and Truong emptied the chamber. With his third bullet, he moved all in for effectively 500,000 or so, and Balsiger tanked for a considerable amount of time before calling.

Truong tabled {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for top two pair, but it was no good against Balsiger's {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a jack-high straight. Balsiger now has 1.75 million chips, while Truong tumbled to 1.14 million.

Patrick Crivell Eliminated in 12th Place (AU$100,000)

Patrick Crivell
Patrick Crivell

It seemed only a matter of time before short-stacked Patrick Crivell would have to make a stand, and he just made it.

Crivell shipped his last 375,000 from the cutoff, and after thinking about it for about a minute, Andrew Phaedonos called him from the small blind. Sorel Mizzi folded the big and the cards were turned up.

Crivell: {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}
Phaedonos: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

"Fade," Crivell's rail began to cry after the flop came down {q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}. The {4-Clubs} turn brought him one step closer to a double and even louder calls of, "Fade."

At that moment the dealer burned and put out the {K-Clubs}. Phaedonos rail erupted as their man spiked a king to send Crivell home in 12th place.

Tam Truong Eliminated in 11th Place (AU$100,000)

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Tam Truong
Tam Truong

After losing a big pot to Jake Balsiger where both players had a flush - Balsiger's was larger - Tam Truong three-bet shoved for 345,000 over an open to 60,000 from Scott Seiver. Seiver called.

Truong: {a-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Seiver: {k-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

The {j-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop gave Seiver a backdoor straight draw to go along with his live cards, and the {q-Hearts} on the turn changed that to an open-ended straight draw.

Any king, ten, nine, or ace would eliminate Truong, and the {a-Diamonds} spiked on the river to give Seiver Broadway. Truong exits in 11th place, earning AUD$100,000, while Seiver is up to 2.4 million chips.
