Moreno Bags Massive Chip Leading Heading Into the Final Day

Nível 21 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Sebastian Moreno
Sebastian Moreno

The money has been reached late on Day 2 of the €1,100 888poker Live Madrid 20th Anniversary Edition and the remaining 39 players will return to the felt tomorrow for Day 3 of the tournament. After late registration was closed, a total of 374 entries were recorded and the remaining players will be battling for the €349,241 prizepool.

The players were finally able to bag up their chips at 3 a.m. thanks to eventual chip leader Sebastian Moreno who finished the day with a healthy 2,950,000 chips. In the last hand of the night, Moreno put his opponent to the test for his entire stack and ran out a flush to eliminate Paulo Ponciano on the money bubble.

Moreno ran up a stack earlier in the day and then started to coast until the last few hands of the night. Keeping with his aggressive play style, Moreno was able to bag a massive chip lead over the rest of the field. Some of the other big stacks heading into Day 3 include Francisco Fernandez (2,080,000), Oleksii Koiev (1,850,000), Jimmy Castano (1,690,000), Vitor Pimieuto (1,400,000), and Paulo Castelo (1,315,000).

There is only one 888poker ambassador left in the field and that accomplishment goes to Ian Simpson who finished Day 2 with 415,000 chips. Simpson spent some time on the feature table when he started to run up a stack and put it in cruise control to end the night. Other 888poker team members that were not as successful throughout the day included Chris Eubank Jr, Vivian Saliba, Josh Manley, and Alexandre Mantovani who was eliminated just short of the money.

It will be a quick turnaround for the remaining players as they are due back on the felt in less than nine hours. The action is scheduled to resume at 12:00 noon local time with 18 minutes remaining in Level 21. The blinds will be 10,000/25,000 with a 25,000 big blind ante when the cards go back in the air. The current plan is to play down to a winner but there have been some talks of extending the tournament an extra day if it is prolonged.

The PokerNews staff will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the live updates en route to crowning a champion in the coming days.

Mantovani Bows Out Short of the Money

Nível 20 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Alexandre Mantovani
Alexandre Mantovani

Alexandre Mantovani raised it up from the hijack and Soraya Estrada called on the button. The flop came {k-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and Mantovani continued with a bet of 26,000. Estrada called and the {3-Diamonds} landed on the turn.

Mantovani fired out another bet of 65,000 and Estrada still called as the {k-Hearts} paired the board on the river. Mantovani checked this time and Estrada moved all in. Mantovani quickly called off his stack of around 140,000 and table {k-Spades}{6-Spades}. However, his kicker was lacking as Estrada showed {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} to eliminate Mantovani.

With Josh Manley also being recently eliminated, Ian Simpson is now the lone 888poker team member still in the field as the money bubble quickly approaches.

Perez Runs Into a Big One

Nível 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Jose Luis Puente
Jose Luis Puente

Sergio Perez raised to 32,000 from the cutoff and Jose Luis Puente defended from the big blind. The flop came {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds} which stirred on a lot of action. Luis Puente checked to Perez who continued with a bet of 35,000. Luis Puente check-raised to 95,000 and Perez instantly jammed all in for just over 400,000. Luis Puente instantly called and the cards were on their backs.

Sergio Perez: {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Jose Luis Puente: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

Perez flopped top pair was up against a monster with Luis Puente flopping a set of sevens. The {q-Diamonds} on the turn gave Perez some outs with a flush draw but the {10-Hearts} on the river was not enough to keep his tournament hopes alive.

Sousa Instigates a Heated Argument, Kettunen Scoops the Pot

Nível 17 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Mario Sousa
Mario Sousa

A huge commotion broke out at Table 75 amidst a massive three-way all in pot. Mario Sousa was the loudest player at the table, rambling off in Spanish which was later translated. As relayed, there were already two players all in and Sousa had a decision to make but began speaking Portuguese with another player at the table which is not allowed. Sousa ended up folding ace-king face up with action pending which brought on the heated argument.

Eventually, the dust settle and the hand played out. Julius Kettunen was one of the players at risk for 114,000 with {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} and was up against the big stack who had {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} and the short stack who held {9-Spades}{8-Spades}.

The flop came {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{5-Spades} and the short stack flopped a flush to take a big lead. However, the {10-Diamonds} and {a-Diamonds} runout gave Kettunen a full house and he more than tripled his stack.

Moura Turns His Rough Start Around

Nível 13 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Caue Moura
Caue Moura

It was a rough start to Day 2 for Caue Moura who spent the first couple of hours on the feature table being live-streamed at the 888poker channel on Twitch. However, after moving to an outer table, Moura spent little time jumping into the action with a raise to 10,000 in middle position. The big blind called and they went heads-up to a flop of {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}{4-Clubs}.

Both players checked through to the {q-Diamonds} on the turn and the {5-Diamonds} on the river. Moura finally flicked in a bet of 10,000 and his opponent check-raised to 40,000. Moura quickly called and his opponent tabled {10-Spades}{6-Spades} for complete air. Moura flipped over {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} for a flopped full house and dragged in the pot.

After two starting flights of the €1,100 888poker Live Madrid 20th Anniversary Edition, 169 players will be returning to the felt for the start of Day 2. There was a large contingent of 888poker team members at this event and Caue Moura will be paving the way for them with a stack of 216,500 chips.

A total of 264 entries have been recorded thus far and that number will continue to grow with late registration open for an additional four levels on Day 2. Many of the 888poker ambassadors jumped in the field on Day 1b and it was Moura who came out on top. He will be joined by the likes of Chris Eubank Jr (158,000), Alexandre Mantovani (80,500), and Ian Simpson (66,500). As for the women on the team, Kara Scott, Vivian Saliba, and newest member Lucia Navarro Martinez will have to use a second bullet today if they want to keep their chances alive.

They will all be looking to chase down overall chip leader Mikel Gurrea who finished Day 1b with a whopping 420,000 chips. Gurrea is a local Spanish poker circuit regular and has plenty of experience when it comes to fighting for the chip lead. Some other notables to keep an eye on as the day unfolds include Alex Romero (288,000), and David Lappin (182,500).

The action is slated to get underway at 4 p.m. local time with the blinds resuming on level 10 at 1,000/2,000 and a 2,000 big blind ante. The levels will continue to be 45 minutes in length throughout the day with a 20-minute break after every three levels. There will also be a 60-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day. Late registration will remain open until the end of level 13, giving plenty of opportunity for those looking to re-enter.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the live updates as the action unfolds and the tournament works its way to the final table tomorrow.
