Brian Yoon Chases Sixth Bracelet; Phil Hellmuth Still in Contention For No. 17 After Day 2 of $10,000 H.O.R.S.E.

Nível 17 : Limits 15,000/30,000, 0 ante
Brian Yoon
Brian Yoon

Brian Yoon might not attract the same attention hoisted on some other players when he sits down at a poker table, but he put his name right among the game’s elite when he won his fifth World Series of Poker bracelet earlier in the 2023 Word Series Of Poker at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. Now Yoon’s in a prime position for more WSOP glory after topping the Day 2 chip counts of Event #54: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E.

Yoon, who won this year's $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship to become the 36th player in WSOP history with five bracelets, eclipsed the million-chip mark with a Razz pot against Alex Livingston and finished the night with 1,465,000, putting him atop the 17 remaining players heading into tomorrow’s Day 3.

Right behind him is another bracelet winner, Connor Drinan, who knocked out two players near the end of the night and then took a pot off Phil Hellmuth to end up with 1,200,000. Christopher Claassen (1,070,000), Scott Seiver (965,000), and Carol Fuchs — who survived an all in on the money bubble but built her stack up to 865,000 in the last level — round out the top five.

Hellmuth took full advantage of late registration, showing up right at the start of the day and amassing a stack of 700,000 after seven 90-minute levels. Mike Gorodinsky (635,000), David “Bakes” Baker (620,000), and four-time bracelet winner Brad Ruben (775,000) are also in a position to add more WSOP hardware to their collection. Meanwhile, Livingston (370,000), Esther Taylor (180,000), Nick Guagenti (155,000), and John Racener (130,000) are coming back tomorrow on short stacks.

Day 2 began with 91 surviving players from Day 1 being joined by 21 late entrants to create a field of 185 total entries and a $1,720,500 prize pool. Phil Ivey was one of those late arrivals as he took his seat right beside Daniel Negreanu. Ivey and Negreanu didn’t catch any momentum and busted early, while they were joined by the likes of Shaun Deeb and Benny Glaser. Play went hand-for-hand two eliminations away from the money, and it took nearly an hour before Paul Volpe was knocked out in 30th place. Another half-hour went by before Andrew Barber was sent to the rail as the unfortunate bubble boy.

Jerry Wong (28th), Brandon Shack-Harris (21st), and Phil Hui (18th) were then part of a flurry of post-bubble bust outs that brought the field down to the 17 who will return when action resumes for Day 3 on June 25 at 2:00 p.m. local time.

Yoon is chasing more WSOP history. Drinan and Seiver are looking to solidify their WSOP resumes. And then there’s Hellmuth and his ever-present quest for bracelet No. 17. That journey continues tomorrow, and PokerNews will be back to follow all the action and provide live updates.

After Connor Drinan completed, he got a call from Phil Hellmuth. Despite pairing his door card, Drinan called a bet from Hellmuth to see fifth street.

Hellmuth continued to improve, now showing three babies on fifth, but after another Hellmuth bet, Drinan said "for most people I'd fold, but you, I'm calling down."

Drinan then spiked in his call and sixth street was dealt. While Drinan did improve with an eight, Hellmuth now showed four to a six and bet again.

Drinan thought audibly about how Hellmuth could have a three and then called again.

Hellmuth then bet seventh street blind, which led Drinan to think some more then say, "I've never seen you blind bet with nothing, so I just fold."

Hellmuth quickly shoved his cards to the muck after Drinan's and dragged the healthy pot.

Omaha Hi-Lo

The second post-bubble bustout is Chino Rheem, who battled back from a single chip to sneak into the money and cash for $16,354.

Rheem raised the button and got a call from Alex Livingston in the big blind.

On the AJ2 flop, Livingston check-called a bet from Rheem. The turn brought the K and after another check from Livingston and bet from Rheem, Livingston check-raised. Rheem called, leaving himself 8,000 behind.

The 10 fell on the river, and after Livingston bet Rheem's last 8,000, Rheem called it off to see Livingston's KK42 for a set of kings. This was more than enough to send Rheem to the rail as he sent his cards back to the dealer and wished his now former tablemates luck.

Barber Bursts the Bubble

Andrew Barber

Limit Hold 'em

After Brian Yoon raised in the hijack and got three-bet by Alex Livingston in the cutoff, Andrew Barber went into the tank with 12,000 of his remaining 19,000 chips in on the big blind.

Barber waited a couple of minutes before making a decision to see if any other players were all in as well. Word got to him that Phil Hellmuth was all in during a pot in Stud Hi-Lo, but that the outcome would be a chop.

After receiving that news, Barber committed his final chips.

The flop came 4KQ and after a check from Yoon, Livingston bet and Yoon folded. Barber would need some help to survive.

Andrew Barber: 1010
Alex Livingston: AQ

Livingston had outflopped Barber's tens, and after the 77 runout, Barber became the bubble boy putting the final 28 players into the money with a min-cash of $16,354 in their pockets.

The first to collect that sum was Jerry Wong who was eliminated in the first hand after the bubble burst.

While short stacks fight to hang in as the bubble nears, Brian Yoon has just extended his chip lead via a big pot with Alex Livingston.

After Yoon completed, Livingston made it two bets and Yoon called. Livingston bet and got called by Yoon on fourth and fifth streets, but then paired on sixth to cede the betting lead to Yoon.

Yoon now bet and got a call from Livingston before the fireworks really began on seventh street.

Yoon bet again and got raised by Livingston. Yoon then came back with a re-raise, which after a bit of thought, Livingston begrudgingly called.

Yoon showed 6x4x3x2xAx for number two, while Livingston flashed his hole cards that made 6x5x3x2xAx for number three.

Shack-Harris Gets Lucky Against Funkhouser

Brandon Shack-Harris

Limit Hold 'em

After Scott Bohlman raised off his short stack in middle position, he got three callers in the form of Brandon Shack-Harris on the button, Paul Volpe in the small blind, and David Funkhouser in the big blind.

The flop came K85 and action checked to Shack-Harris who bet. Volpe called and Funkhouser then raised.

Bohlman folded his hand, and Shack-Harris then three-bet his hand which got a fold from Volpe but Funkhouser stuck around.

The turn brought the 5 and after a check from Funkhouser, Shack-Harris bet again. Funkhouser now came with the check-raise and Shack-Harris called.

The river was the K, double-pairing the board, and after another check from Funkhouser, Shack-Harris bet. Funkhouser rubbed his hands over his face, pained by the developments on the river.

Ultimately he tossed a call over to Shack-Harris who showed KQ and said "I got lucky, as the pot was pushed his way."

Ly kept betting and got another call from Seiver. On sixth street, Ly caught one of Seiver's threes and bet again.

Volpe showed an eight-seven, but Bohlman showed a winning seven-six, to add back a significant chunk to what had been a somewhat shrinking stack.
