Phil Ivey Bags Chip Lead After Day 1 of Event #8: €25,500 Platinum High Roller

Nível 12 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

It was a delayed start to the day in Event #8: €25,500 Platinum High Roller but once the cards got in the air, the players quickly got down to business. In an abbreviated Day 1 of the tournament, none other than Phil Ivey bagged up the chip lead with 3,895,000 chips after just 12 levels, leading the remaining 30 players.

Ivey himself only played three levels after entering the field after the last break of the night. In the largest pot of the tournament thus far, Ivey busted Abdelhakim Zoufri in a cooler spot. Ivey flopped a straight with a flush draw and completed his flush on the turn while Zoufri made the nut straight. Ivey bet all three streets and shoved all in on the river that Zoufri paid off.

Earlier in the day, Ivey was heads-up with King's Resort owner Leon Tsoukernik in the €100,000 Short Deck High Roller. Tsoukernik came out on top of that battle but Ivey still earned a payday of over €826,000. After taking a break for a couple of hours, Ivey made his way back down to the casino and carried that momentum through the last two hours of the night.

The second-largest stack of the day belonged to high-roller regular Timothy Adams with 3,650,000. Adams gained the majority of his chips after flopping a set of eights against Yusuf Kurt who flopped top pair with an open-ended straight draw. Adams filled up on the river and eliminated Kurt in a pot of over 2,500,000 chips. James Chen (3,500,000) and Kahle Burns (3,090,000) were the other two players to bag over the 3 million mark.

In what was nearly a 90-minute delay before the tournament got underway, eventually, enough players were registered to get the cards in the air. Even with a 500 big blind starting stack to kick things off, there was no shortage of action in the early going. In fact, there were two eliminations before the first break with Sam Grafton and Alex Foxen both having to hit up the registration desk again.

The number of entries steadily grew throughout the course of the day and a total of 54 were registered by the end of Day 1. Late registration will remain open for another two levels on Day 2 and the tournament has been extended to a three-day event. That means, on Day 2 they will play down to the final six players.

James Chen, coming fresh off a WSOP bracelet victory in the €250,000 Super High Roller, has that taste of winning now and holds one of the top stacks again. In the last level of the night, Chen flopped a set of fours in a three-way pot and managed to double up through Rainer Kempe's pocket aces. Chen wrapped up the night with a stack of 3,500,000 chips as he hopes to add another bracelet to his collection.

Some other notables to keep an eye on tomorrow include Anson Tsang (2,770,000), Johannes Becker (2,360,000), and Manig Loeser (2,340,000). Both Tsang and Loeser made deep runs in Event #7: €1,100 Turbo Bounty Hunter last night finishing in fifth and third place respectively. Becker got himself off to an early lead and held that through much of the day but plateaued out in the latter stages. The 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Hossein Ensan also bagged up a stack of 480,000 to return to on Day 2.

Unfortunately, some players will have to put up another €25,500 tomorrow if they wish to get back in the field. Dario Sammartino, Andreas Eiler, Jack Sinclair, and Anatoly Filatov were all eliminated at one point or another and chose to hold off on their re-entries. Late registration will remain open until after Level 14 on Day 2.

The cards will go back in the air tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. local time with the blinds resuming at 20,000/40,000 and a 40,000 big blind ante. Each player will be given a fresh set of six time banks at the start of the day. As always, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the tournament floor to bring you all of the action throughout the entire day.

Chen Flops a Set to Scoop a Huge Pot

Nível 12 : 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
James Chen
James Chen

Rainer Kempe raised it up from under the gun and was called by James Chen in the small blind and Paul Phua in the big blind. The flop came {9-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and a little limit poker broke out. Phua was the first to bet 100,000 and Kempe raised to 200,000. Chen flat-called and Phua shoved all in for 300,000. Kempe re-raised to 650,000 and Chen still called.

The turn was the {5-Spades} and Chen checked again. Kempe thought for a minute before shoving all in which was met by a snap-call from Chen. Chen was the player at risk between the two players for 732,000 on the side pot.

James Chen: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Rainer Kempe: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Paul Phua: {k-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

Chen flopped a set of fours and was in a commanding lead against his two opponents. The {10-Spades} completed the board which eliminated Phua and Chen more than doubled up.

Monster Pot for Adams Eliminates Kurt

Nível 10 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Timothy Adams
Timothy Adams

The action folded to Rainer Kempe on the button who made it 50,000 to go. Yusuf Kurt three-bet to 135,000 in the small blind and Timothy Adams four-bet to 275,000 in the big blind. Kempe was forced to fold but Kurt still called.

The flop came {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} which stirred on even more action. Kurt started with a check and Adams continued for 200,000. Kurt check-raised to 425,000 and Adams shoved all in. Kurt called off his stack of 1,280,000 and the cards were on their backs.

Timothy Adams : {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}
Yusuf Kurt: {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Kurt flopped top pair and a straight draw against the set of eights from Adams. The {q-Spades} on the turn was a brick and the {7-Hearts} on the river improved Adams to a full house. Kurt was eliminated and Adams moved near the top of the chip counts.

Katz Scores a Double Through Grafton

Nível 9 : 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

Cary Katz opened to 32,000 from the button and Daniel Pidun called from the small blind. Sam Grafton three-bet to 145,000 from the big blind and Catz stuck around with a call but Pidun folded.

The dealer fanned a flop of {q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{4-Clubs} that was checked through to the {2-Hearts} turn. Grafton checked once more but Catz bet 160,000. Grafton check-called.

The {a-Diamonds} completed the board and Grafton checked for a third time. Katz moved all in for about 445,000 and Grafton snap-called. Grafton tabled {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for a pair of aces but that wasn't good enough as Katz turned over {4-Spades}{2-Spades} for fours and deuces to win the pot.

Action folded to Yusuf Kurt who raised to 23,000 from the button. Julien Martini three-bet shoved for his last 93,000 from the small blind and Kurt made the call.

Julien Martini: {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Yusuf Kurt: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

Chen is Lost Without His Watch

Nível 4 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
James Chen
James Chen

There's been a lot of table chatter over on Table 47 and some of the latest had to do with James Chen missing his watch. During his bracelet run in the €250,000 Super High Roller, Chen was constantly checking his watch in the middle of the hands to randomize his decision.

"How are you going to play without your watch?" Alex Foxen asked.

"I forgot it in my room. I'll have to use something else instead."

"Here, you can have mine," Rainer Kempe offered. "It's a nice watch."

Meanwhile, Chen opened to 13,000 from under the gun and Timothy Adams three-bet to 44,000 in position. Chen responded with a four-bet to 110,000 and Adams called.

The flop came {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and Chen led out for 85,000. Adams raised to 285,000 just as his time was expiring which stirred on another conversation about the time banks. Chen thought for a moment but decided to let his hand go and Adams collected the pot.

Grafton and Foxen Eliminated Early

Nível 3 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

At one table, a completed board of {10-Spades}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{q-Spades} was spread across the felt with just Sam Grafton and Joao Vieira heads-up in the blinds. Grafton checked to Vieira who bet 110,000 and Grafton check-raised all in for 542,000. Vieira burned through four time extensions before finally making the call. Grafton showed {k-Spades}{10-Clubs} while Vieira had {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} to eliminate Grafton.

Next door, Alex Foxen was down to just 17,000 after losing a huge pot to Timothy Adams. Foxen shipped all in from under the gun and Kahle Burns re-raised to 30,000. Daniel Pidun just called and Matthias Eibinger four-bet to 100,000 in the big blind. Burns called and Pidun ripped all in for 394,000. Both Eibinger and Burns sent their cards to the muck.

Foxen showed {j-Spades}{10-Spades} but was dominated by the {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} of Pidun. The flop of {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} was fun for all as Foxen hit a pair of tens but Pidun had a better straight draw and a flush draw. The {7-Hearts} on the turn changed nothing but the {7-Diamonds} on the river gave Pidun the flush to eliminate Foxen.
