Title Defender Shack-Harris Thrives on Day 1 of the Record-Breaking $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Brandon Shack-Harris
Brandon Shack-Harris

This year's $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship saw a massive turnout of 428 players, making it the biggest edition of this tournament in history by ten runners (418 players in 2014).

The first ten levels of the tournament reduced the field to less than a half, leaving only 186 players hope to reach the $938,732 top prize, including the title defender Brandon Shack-Harris.

Shack-Harris was one of the driving forces on Day 1, building a promising 299,500 stack for the next stage. Last year, Shack-Harris ranked 36th at the end of Day 1 with 176,600 in his bag.

The reigning champion is among the tournament top ten but the pole position is in strong possession of Sorin Drajneanu, who climbed to 469,200 in the last level, leaving all of his opponents far behind.

With just over $100,000 in live tournament cashes to his name, Drajneanu certainly isn't one of the familiar faces in $10,000 Championship events. Most of his previous reported notches came in his hometown Bucharest, Romania's capital.

Drajneanu has been flying under the radar so far, leaving the spotlight to many other notable players who took to the felt. As is always the case, the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship drew a star-studded line-up. Drajneanu's nearest rival looked to be Andjelko Andrejevic, who's on 369,400. Andrejevic knocked out Jason Mercier in the penultimate level of the day and managed to add a lot more chips during the remaining session.

Pot-Limit Omaha specialist Jeff Madsen was among those who thrived on Day 1, bagging 219,800. The four-time bracelet winner was sitting next to Daniel Negreanu. Madsen first dropped about a half of his stack but hit an uphill swing when he tangled in a three-way pot against Negreanu and Daniel Weinman.

Negreanu was all-in preflop with jacks and queen-ten, while Madsen ended up all-in on the flop, holding double-suited aces. Weinman had flopped a wrap and bottom pair, seeking a double knockout, but Madsen's aces remained the winning hand. Madsen busted Negreanu in addition to a full double through Weinman, catapulting his stack back over the starting line.

Other well-known players who climbed over the virtual average chip-line included Johnny Lodden (270,000), Dermot Blain (214,000), Ben Lamb (189,200), Dmitry Yurasov (182,900), Roberto Romanello (179,800), Justin Bonomo (160,500), Mike Gorodinsky (150,200) and Shaun Deeb (144,600).

They will continue maneuvering their belongings on Day 2, which kicks off Thursday at 12 p.m. in the Brasilia Room. Tune to PokerNews for the live coverage to see which of the remaining players will make a deep run at the title.

Negreanu Ousted in a Three-Way All-In; Madsen Soars

Jeff Madsen

Jeff Madsen limped from the hijack, and his neighbour Daniel Negreanu wanted to make a move with his short stack. Negreanu raised it up to 2,800, finding a customer in the form of small blind Daniel Weinman. The action returned to Madsen, who re-raised pot, bumping it to 15,200. Negranu was happy to hear that, and he slid in his last 9,300. Weinman scanned Madsen's stack and called his three-bet.

The flop came {6-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{9-Spades}, and Weinman asked Madsen how much he had behind, which was roughly 10,000. Weinman moved all in, and Madsen called off for his last 9,500. With no further action to come, all three hands were turned up.

Daniel Negreanu: {J-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Jeff Madsen: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Daniel Weinman: {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Negreanu was in bad shape, blocking his own gutshot straight draw and trailing with pocket jacks. Madsen had double-suited aces, but Weinman's hand had solid equity to provide a double knockout as he rolled over a wrap and bottom pair.

The {3-Hearts} turn and the {2-Spades} river, however, changed nothing, leaving Madsen out front. He took all of Negreanu's chips and scored a full double through Weinman on top of that.

Negreanu and Madsen pumped fists before the Canadian superstar left the tournament area. Madsen is now back over a starting stack.

Daniel Negreanu Doubles Up

Nível 5 : 250/500, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu (as seen in a previous event)
Daniel Negreanu (as seen in a previous event)

Jeff Madsen sat down to Daniel Negreanu's right, so we stuck around to see if anything would happen.

The gut feeling was right, although Madsen was only a spectator, sitting between the two main characters. A player in the lojack opened to 1,300 and Negreanu called, saying, "How much do you want?"

"Fours cards, anything can happen," Negreanu added.

The big blind joined the action and they went three ways to the {Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop. The original raiser asked what a pot is and bet out the max, making it 4,150. Negreanu had a strong response, "I raise pot," re-potting it to 16,600.

The big blind wasn't willing to let his hand go that fast, admitting, "I have a big hand."

Negreanu immediately replied with, "Shhh," indicating that a hand shouldn't be discussed in a multi-way pot.

The player in the big blind folded and the lojack asked Negreanu how much he had left behind. It was 20,700. In the meantime, the player in the big blind stood up, took his phone, and started shooting a video of Negreanu.

Negreanu liked that, posing like a Popeye the Sailor, showing his biceps.

The lojack called and, when the {K-Clubs} hit the turn, he moved all in to put Negreanu at risk. Negreanu called right away.

Lojack: {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}{6-Hearts}
Negreanu: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades}

Negreanu was ahead and he managed to avoid a king on the blank river.

Zhou Pots the River

With the board reading {2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, Andreas Freund and Quan Zhou tangled in a big pot.

There was 11,000 in the middle and Freund, sitting in the big blind, checked to his opponent. Cutoff Zhou announced, "Pot," putting Freund to a tough test.

Freund seemed to have a decent hand, but he remained stoic, quietly studying the situation. He took over a minute to decide his action, which eventually resulted in a fold.

Wearing an extravagant suit today, Zhou is already up to 62,000, earning 60 big blinds through the first hour of play.
