Valentin Vornicu Dominates Day 1b of the Event #19: THE GIANT - $365 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1b of the Event #19: THE GIANT - $365 No-Limit Hold'em attracted 1,230 entrants who created a $369,000 prize pool. The top 185 players reached the money in Level 17 and the remaining play brought many casualties to reduce the surviving field to just over 100 players.

WSOP Circuit legend Valentin Vornicu has been crushing the whole day, running over his table. Vornicu's fantastic ride continued even after his relocation to a new table, and the nine-time ring winner eventually finished with 869,500, putting his name atop of the Day 1b leaderboard.

"Last week I fired three entries, and I played three hands total," Vornicu revealed his unique performance from Day 1a. Today was a completely different story for the former International Mathematics Olympiad bronze medalist. Originally from Bucharest, Romania, the 34-year-old professional poker player now lives in San Diego.

"I always bag big in the $365 tournaments," said Vornicu, whose results in these events have been stellar through his career.

Vornicu is yet to win a bracelet but he's already notched a respectable result on the WSOP main series, too. Last year, Vornicu went deep in the Main Event, finishing in 23rd place for a career-best $269,430.

Other notable player who thrived on Day 1b was Eric Baldwin, who has 547,500. Baldwin has already been decorated with a WSOP bracelet. He has amassed more than $5.2 million in live tournament cashes.

Among those who will be back for Day 2 on July 8 are also Dinn Nguyen (494,000), Danny Goncalves (472,000), Louis Russo (468,000), Aditya Agarwal (260,000), "Captain" Tom Franklin and Jan Nakladal (144,000).

Todd Brunson, Kathy Liebert, Alex Keating and Roland Israelashvili might have another shot in the remaining flights as they all fell during the last few hands of today's play.

Three more starting flights are scheduled for THE GIANT, across the next three Fridays as Day 1c takes place on June 23 and Day 1d on June 30 while the last chance to make it through will be on Day 1e (July 7).

Todd Brunson Quadruples Up

Todd Brunson was down to his last 40,500 and he moved them in play from the second position, causing a chain reaction.

Next to Brunson, Aditya Agarwal called. A player who was next to act reshoved for about 130,000 or so, and his left-handed opponent called all-in for roughly 25,000. The avalanche finally stopped at Agarwal, who released his hand, leaving a free money to compete for.

Todd Brunson: {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Bigger stack: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Smaller stack: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}

Brunson's Cowboys were in a perfect situation for a quadruple, and the board {7-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{J-Spades} confirmed his victory. The player with the ace-queen departed.

Phil Laak Doubles; Then Busts

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Phil Laak (as seen in a previous event)
Phil Laak (as seen in a previous event)

Phil Laak had {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and didn't hit anything on the {4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} board, but somehow, his hand was still good enough to provide him with a double.

Laak moved up to 17,300, paid his ante and played the following hand, seated in the cutoff. Action folded to him and he open-shoved his remaining 16,900. He found a customer in the player in the big blind.

Phil Laak: {K-Spades}{8-Clubs}
Big blind: {A-Spades}{2-Diamonds}

The board {5-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} missed Laak's cards again, but this time his hand wasn't strong enough to keep him in the tournament. Laak offered a "good luck guys" to the table before leaving the Miranda Room.

Meanwhile, Jamie Kerstetter is no longer sitting at McKeehen's table as she couldn't spin her short stack up.

Agarwal Gets Value with Jacks

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Aditya Agarwal (as seen in a previous event)
Aditya Agarwal (as seen in a previous event)

The blinds have just passed through Aditya Agarwal's seat, and Agarwal was involved in both of the previous hands.

First hand saw Agarwal in the big blind, calling a raise to 3,000 from a player in the hijack. There had already been one limp from a middle position, and the limper wanted to see the flop, too.

The {6-Spades}{3-Clubs}{10-Hearts} flop brought a 3,000 cbet and only Agarwal paid before the {2-Clubs} went check-check.

The river card was the {K-Clubs} and Agarwal checked again, letting his opponent fire another 3,500. Agarwal thought for a bit before calling, only to see opponent's {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}.

The next hand ended up better for Agarwal, who was in the small blind. With the preflop action unknown, it seemed that Agarwal three-bet over a raise from the cutoff as there was already more than 20,000 in the pot when the two players checked 5sKsKc flop.

They checked the {8-Diamonds} turn, too, but Agarwal led out 8,500 on the {2-Diamonds} river. He received a call, so he announced, "jacks", turning over his {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} to take down the juicy pot.

Vornicu Doesn't Chop

Nível 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Valentin Vornicu (as seen in a previous event)
Valentin Vornicu (as seen in a previous event)

With nine rings under his belt, Valentin Vornicu is one of the WSOP Circuit legends. To be such a superstar who wins event after event, one certainly has to have skills to extract value anywhere where it's possible.

Vornicu proved his talent in praxis, playing in a multi-way pot on the {A-}{A-}{A-}{8-}{9-} board. After the betting round, the showdown was reduced to just the Circuit hero and one other player.

"We might be chopping," said Vornicu, turning over his {9-}{7-} for a rivered boat.

"Oh, I'm one street too late," replied his opponent, showing {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a turned full house.

The pot went Vornicu's way, and so did the following two. The next hand saw Vornicu flat after a raise from an early position. He was in the lowjack and invited the hijack and big blind to the contest, too, but then took it himself with a bet on the ace-high flop.

The next hand brought an open from Vornicu's right-hand opponent, and he flatted again. The big blind called as well as they went to the {5-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{8-Hearts} flop. Again, it was Vornicu who tried to increase the pot, with a bet worth 2,700. Only big blind accepted.

Vornicu barreled the {9-Spades} turn with an additional 5,600, and the big blind check-called again.

The river was the {A-Clubs} and the player in the big blind checked to Vornicu yet again. Vornicu fired once more, making it 6,600. The big blind folded, and Vornicu took down a third pot in a row.

Event #19 : THE GIANT Day 1b

2017 Bracelet
2017 Bracelet

Welcome to the second Day 1 flight of THE GIANT at the WSOP 2017 Rio All suite Casino and Hotel. With a $365 buy-in, this is the most affordable live No-Limit Hold’em event ever offered for a WSOP gold bracelet.

Day 1a drew 1,629 entries, creating a prize pool of $488,700 with a min-cash worth $557. Jeffrey Brin ended Day 1a as the chip leader with an impressive stack of 718,00.

This is the second of five Friday night flights with the remainder on June 23, 30, and July 7, with Day 2 on Saturday July 8.

This is a brand new event for 2017 and, when the schedule was announced, Ty Stewart WSOP Executive Director said:

“This 2017 schedule reflects our continuing goal to broaden poker’s appeal and encourage first timers and recreational players to come experience the WSOP for themselves, With the new $365 buy-in Giant anchoring Friday nights, alongside a tent pole event awarding millions every weekend, we believe we have the offering to be well worth the trip. Plus, for the serious and high-stakes player, we remain committed to having the most diverse schedule of events of any tournament in the world. Whatever your game or bankroll, let the bracelet chase begin.”

Cards are in the air at 7 p.m. with play scheduled to last eighteen 20-minute levels or down to 10 players, whichever comes first. Late registration is open for eight levels which will be approximately 10 p.m. Play is expected to end at around 2:40 a.m.

Players will play their Day 1 on any of the five starting flights they choose and they will play into the money on Day 1 (just like Colossus did in 2016). Anyone surviving their Day 1 will have their chips put into play on Day 2 (if they choose not to forfeit them to attempt another flight) on July 8, with the final table taking place July 9. This event features unlimited reentry during the open registration period. People can end up cashing in multiple flights, however, only one chip stack can be carried forward to Day 2 play.

The Giant will still pay 15% of the field, based on the individual flight number of entries, and everyone on Day 1 who cashes can receive their prize money that day. The remaining prize money from each flight gets carried over to Day 2, along with the other flights’ remaining prize money, to combine and create the remaining prize pool the Day 2 players will vie for.
