Welcome to the first ever flight of The Giant, Event #19 of the 2017 World Series of Poker at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. With a $365 buy-in this is the most affordable live no-limit hold'em event ever offered for a WSOP gold bracelet.

This is a brand new event for 2017. When the schedule was announced Ty Stewart, WSOP Executive Director, said:

“This 2017 schedule reflects our continuing goal to broaden poker’s appeal and encourage first timers and recreational players to come experience the WSOP for themselves, With the new $365 buy-in Giant anchoring Friday nights, alongside a tent pole event awarding millions every weekend, we believe we have the offering to be well worth the trip. Plus, for the serious and high-stakes player, we remain committed to having the most diverse schedule of events of any tournament in the world. Whatever your game or bankroll, let the bracelet chase begin.”

Cards are in the air at 7 p.m. with play scheduled to last 18 20-minute levels or down to 10 players, whichever comes first. Late registration is open for 8 levels which will be approximately through 10 p.m. Play is expected to end at around 2:40 a.m.

Players can play their Day 1 on any of the five starting flights they choose, and they will play into the money on Day 1 (just like Colossus did in 2016). Anyone surviving their Day 1 will have their chips put into play on Day 2 (if they choose not to forfeit them to attempt another flight) on July 8, with the final table taking place July 9.

This event features unlimited re-entry during the open registration period. People can end up cashing in multiple flights; however, only one chip stack can be carried forward to Day 2. The Giant will still pay 15 percent of the field, based on the individual flight number of entries, and everyone on Day 1 who cashes can receive their prize money that day. The remaining prize money from each flight gets carried over to Day 2, along with the other flights’ remaining prize money, to combine and create the remaining prize pool the Day 2 players will vie for.

The tournament director went over the rules for The Giant, as outlined in the intro below, and then issued the “Shuffle up and deal.”

As play begins there are 971 players and that number is steadily climbing.

In case you were wondering, Sarah Herring talks to Jack Effel about the nature of The Giant.

Early Action For Hockey Nut

Nível 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

Chris McCauley from Texas is known as “Hockey Nut.” and describes himself as a “Full-time hockey enthusiast and part-time poker pro." Along with 1,045 entrants so far this level, he has dreams of turning his $365 into a great payday and, who knows, a gold WSOP bracelet.

McCauley was one of several players who called the big blind before a player in the big blind raised it up to 350. Three players called the raise and it went four-ways to the flop of {6-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}.

No action there so the dealer put out the turn card {k-Clubs}. That saw a bet of 625 from the player on the big blind. McCauley was the only caller.

Heads up to the river {j-Diamonds} and caution prevailed with both players checking.

{a-Spades}{k-Hearts} for McCauley. {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} for his opponent. Chop it up.

Dave Gutfreund Wins Early Pot

Nível 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

With an under-the-gun limper, Dave Gutfreund raised to 200. He got three callers behind including both players in the small and big blinds.

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and its checked to Gutfreund who bets 375. The player behind called and both players from the blinds fold, along with the original limper.

Heads up on the turn, both players checked the {10-Hearts}.

The river brought the {8-Clubs} and Gutfreund bet 2,625. His opponent folded and he took an early lead.

Josh Mcinek On the Comeback Trail

Nível 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

Not much luck the first two levels for Josh Mcinek as his stack had been whittled down to just under 7,000.

He found a good spot to get it in though with {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} and picked up one call from a player who tabled {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {4-Clubs}{10-Spades}{4-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} and Mcinek’s stack started to look a lot healthier.
