Dehkhargani Leads, Glantz Overcomes Controversial Hand on Day 1

Nível 10 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Ray Dehkharghani
Ray Dehkharghani

It looked like it would be a slow day and a weak turnout in Event #17: $10,000 Dealers Choice 6-Handed Championship, but by day's end, a solid 102 players had been seated in the event.

Just 37 of those made it on to Day 2, and leading the way will be Ray Dehkharghani, a noted mixed game player who won last year's $10,000 Razz Championship. Dehkharghani turned his 50,000 starting stack into 265,000 to bag a narrow lead over Viacheslav Zhukov (258,000) and Zachary Freeman (257,200).

However, while there was plenty of laughter at a bunch of the tables as regulars battled in 20-odd different games, Day 1 was marred by controversy in a pot contested between Matt Glantz and Samuel Touil.

It happened during no-limit hold'em, when Touil came in for a raise and saw Glantz three-bet. Touil made a forward motion with his chips but didn't set them onto the felt, and Glantz piled in his remaining stack and turned over his ace-king. Touil argued he hadn't completed his motion, and supervisors agreed that he still had action.

Glantz was adamant that Touil had angled him, but in the end, his vehement argument went unheeded and Touil was allowed to just call. Touil stuck the rest in after flopping a straight draw with ace-jack, Glantz called, and Touil got there.

Glantz was left with just 33,000 with limits at 3,000/6,000 but got the last laugh as he managed to recover and bag 84,700, while Touil fell in a later pot.

Other notables bagging above-average stacks included Jon Turner, James Obst, Mike Matusow, Todd Brunson and Daniel Negreanu. Players going bust included Phil Hellmuth, Jason Mercier, Brian Rast, Dzmitry Urbanovich, and Stephen Chidwick.

Play resumes Friday at 2 p.m. with another 10-level day on the docket, so come back to PokerNews to see which players will be contesting the final stages of the Dealer's Choice Championship.

Glantz Loses Controversial Pot, Calls Touil a 'Shot Taker'

Nível 9 : 3,000/6,000, 0 ante
Matt Glantz
Matt Glantz

No-Limit Hold'em

From under the gun, Samuel Touil opened with a raise to 5,100 only to have Matt Glantz three-bet the cutoff to 11,000.

The action returned to Touil, and after a few moments he grabbed what remained of his chips - roughly 53,900 - in both hands and moved them towards the bet he had already placed.

Believing that Touil had moved all in, Glantz pushed his chips forward and tabled his {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

"I never went all in" stated Touil.

"You might win the hand. You might hit your three-outer. Just don't take a shot at me!" stated Glantz.

Immediately the floor was called over to make a decision on what had just happened.

After hearing of the situation, another tournament floor was called and a more detailed explanation of the situation was given.

Glantz and the rest of the table that included John Monnette agreed that Touil did in fact not release his chips but did motion them forward like he was intending to move all in. Touil and Glantz both started to become a little agitated at the situation thinking they both had correct points of view. As the two tournament floors conversed, in the corner with their supervisor for nearly five minutes, eventually they returned to make a ruling.

Under WSOP rules and guidelines, the chips must be released and touch the felt in this situation and consequently, the all-in action would not be binding. Instead, Touil would be forced to only match the bet, and due to this, Glantz became more outspoken.

"You're allowing someone to take a shot!" stated Glantz.

"There was a clear motion to go all in. You have to rule in the interest of the game and protect the integrity of the game. You cannot reward shot-takers."

With Touil forced to call and the hand made to continue to the flop, Glantz believed that this kind of play wasn't fair and that Touil should have been forced to at least min-raise.

"Everyone can do it later on if this is the ruling." continued Glantz.

"You are still in position to protect your hand" stated the tournament floor supervisor.

Regardless, the hand continued and Touil called as the dealer fanned the {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} flop and Touil moved all in for 38,000. Glantz called and the cards were tabled.

Glantz: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Touil: {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

The turn of the {Q-Spades} saw chop outs develop, but when the {K-Diamonds} landed on the river, Touil would be awarded the double up.

Once the chips were pushed Touil added, "See it doesn't matter anyway!"

"It's not about the hand losing. It's about the shot you took. It's about them allowing it. I don't care about you. I care about the rules and the integrity of the game." continued Glantz.

"Same, same," added Touil.

"I don't care about your hand. I want people to be honest!" stated Glantz as the next hand began.

"Literal Chip and a Chair" for Bach

James Obst

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

David Bach opened for a raise in the cutoff, and James Obst made it 7,000 on the button. Bach came back with a repot, and they got it all in. Each player drew one, and Bach drew a second and third time while Obst stayed pat after his first card. Obst rolled over {8-}{7-}{5-}{3-}{2-}, and Bach showed {2-}{3-}{4-}{5-}.

"Eight or a seven," he said, sweating out his final card. It was a {9-} though.

Stacks were cut down, and Obst had 46,600. Bach had 100 more than that.

"A literal chip and a chair," Bach said with a laugh. Still, he appears to have hung on for a few minutes so far.

Friedman Folds to Negreanu

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Big O

Adam Friedman opened to 3,000, and with the action on Daniel Negreanu on the button, he announced a pot raise and placed 10,800 into the middle. Friedman began deliberating, and after roughly two minutes, he called, leaving himself just 11,000 behind.

The dealer spread a {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Spades} flop, and Friedman checked to Negreanu, who dropped a stack of pink 5,000-denomination chips into the middle to effectively put Friedman all in.

As Friedman entered the tank, Negreanu spoke up, saying, "You see that? That's the face of someone that doesn't have a nine!"

A few minutes went by, and Friedman added, "I'm just trying to figure out if there is a way you don't have aces here."

Another minute or two went by, and Friedman called the clock on himself. The supervisor came over and gave Friedman 30 seconds to come up with a decision.

Eventually that decision was a fold.

"I'll make you sleep better tonight!" announced Negreanu as he showed Friedman his {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}.

"I'm not sure how many people would fold in this spot," added Friedman. As both players continued to discuss the hand, Friedman hinted that he had {A-}{K-}{K-}{5-}{2-}.

Mercier Eliminated by Israelashvili

Roland Israelashvili raised to 4,000 from under the gun, and Jason Mercier three-bet to 6,000 from the cutoff. Quinn Do called in the small blind, as did Israelashvili.

Do drew two, Israelashvili drew one, and Mercier drew three.

Israelashvili bet out 2,000, and Mercier called all in for 500. Do check-called the full bet.

Do and Mercier drew three while Israelashvili stood pat.

Do checked, Israelashvili bet 4,000, and Do folded.

Israelashvili: {10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{A-Diamonds}
Mercier: {4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{A-Hearts}

With Mercier drawing two again, the first card he squeezed was the {5-Clubs}, meaning that any diamond or low card below a ten that didn't pair him would see him scoop the pot.

Unfortunately for Mercier, he could only manage to find the {K-Diamonds} and was forced to exit.

Big O

Catching the action on the {9-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop with both James Obst and Alexey Makarov committing 6,800 preflop, Obst bet 7,800. Makarov responded by raising all in for his last 33,900, and after some deliberation, Obst called.

Obst: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{Q-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Makarov: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades}

The turn and river came the {K-Diamonds} and the {3-Diamonds}, and Makarov rivered threes full to double to more than 80,000 in chips.

Chidwick Rivered by Freeman to the Rail

Pot-Limit Omaha

Zachary Freeman opened to 2,500, and Stephen Chidwick three-bet the button to 8,700. Freeman called, and the flop landed {J-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Freeman bet out 15,000, and Chidwick moved all in for his last 30,200. Freeman called, and the cards were tabled.

Freeman: {K-Spades}{J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Hearts}
Chidwick: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades}

With Chidwick in the lead with his overpair and nut flush draw, the {2-Clubs} on the turn changed little. When the {5-Clubs} completed the board on the river, though, Freeman made jacks up to send Chidwick tumbling to the rail.

Eric Kurtzman
Eric Kurtzman

Pot-Limit Omaha

Catching the action on the turn, with the board reading {10-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades} and the pot sitting at around 9,200, Eric Kurtzman bet 6,500 from the big blind.

Ray Dehkharghani was on the button, and he deliberated for a few moments before calling.

The river was the {K-Spades}. Kurtzman sat there for roughly a minute and then announced, "I bet the pot!"

The dealer informed Kurtzman that it was 22,200, and Kurtzman pushed forward his 19,375-chip stack.

Dehkharghani tossed in a chip to signify a call, and Kurtzman stated, "King-jack."

Dehkharghani tabled {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}, and at first glance, the table assumed it was a chop before David Benyamine tapped the three which gave Dehkharghani kings full.

Kurtzman tabled his {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for trip kings and made his exit from the tournament area.

After the final draw, Ramos checked, and Baker bet 1,600, only to have Ramos check-raise to 3,200. Baker called quickly, and Ramos fanned his {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for an eight-eight.

Baker shook his head and acknowledged a scoop, as Ramos indicated he caught the {8-Diamonds} last.

"Yeah I had you before that," announced Baker as he mucked his hand.
