Moneymaker Bags Big on Day 3 as the 2021 WSOP Main Event Bubble Bursts

Nível 16 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Chris Moneymaker

The 2021 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event has concluded Day 3 by bursting the money bubble, sending all 1,000 survivors home with a guaranteed min-cash of $15,000. No portion of the $62,011,250 prize pool has been awarded yet in the pinnacle live poker event of the year at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, as all survivors bagged and tagged their chips for the night.

Jessica Cai claimed the Day 3 chip lead with a stack of 1,796,000 with Natural8 ambassador Phachara Wongwichit (1,773,000) hot on her heels. Several other contestants bagged up more than 1.5 million in chips such as Joshua Paige Remitio (1,671,000), Ehsan Amiri (1,574,000), Stephen Song (1,557,000), Neel Choksi (1,552,000), and Andreas Kniep (1,509,000).

The early spotlight on Day 3 belonged to the 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker, who was among the first players to run up a seven-figure stack. Moneymaker spent the last levels of the night on the feature table and advanced with one of the biggest stacks in the room as he bagged up 1,432,000. Among the victims of his early hot run was also Robert Kuhn, who ran into pocket aces. Fellow Main Event champions Qui Nguyen (659,000) and Martin Jacobson (142,000) survived the day as well.

Cai was spotted mid-way through the day with a big stack and she continued to rake in big pots to become a contender for the overnight lead. She knocked out several opponents, one of which ran with an overpair into her flopped full house, and she eventually claimed the top spot once the money bubble had burst. Dragana Lim chipped up throughout the day and bagged up a top ten stack as well after claiming 1,539,000 to her name. Other female contenders to advance with above average stacks were JJ Liu (765,000), Laura Desantis (686,000), Mimi Luu (682,000), and Kitty Kuo (528,000) while at least two dozen more will return for the money stages.

Less fortunate were familiar names such as Anthony Zinno, Justin Bonomo, Ben Lamb, Ole Schemion, Greg Mueller, Faraz Jaka, Andy Black, Niall Farrell, the 2007 WSOP Main Event champion Jerry Yang, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Pat Lyons, Joseph Hebert, and Chris Hunichen to name all but a few.

During hand-for-hand play which commenced with 1,005 hopefuls remaining, eight hands were completed to whittle down the field to the 1,000 survivors. The bubble burst in painful fashion when Kevin Campbell saw his aces cracked by the ace-nine of Chris Alafogiannis, triggering cheers from all corners of the Amazon room. While Campbell missed out on the $15,000 payday, he was given a seat for the 2022 WSOP Main Event as consolation prize.

Campbell Suffers Heartbreak on the Bubble

Nível 16 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Chris Alafogiannis and Kevin Campbell
Chris Alafogiannis and Kevin Campbell

Chris Alafogiannis raised to 16,000 and Kevin Campbell shoved his last 93,000 into the middle. Alafogiannis called.

After waiting for another all-in player to double up, the players turned their cards over.

Kevin Campbell: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Chris Alafogiannis: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

The flop ran out {9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and the nine sent a wave of electricity through the large crowd that had gathered around the table.

The turn was {7-Clubs} and another wave of energy went through the crowd as Alafogiannis picked up a flush draw.

The river was {9-Spades} and a large roar ripped through the crowd for the three nines of Alafogiannis. Campbell's aces were cracked and he was eliminated on the stone bubble.

"It's all good. What are you gonna do?" Campbell said as WSOP Vice President Jack Effel offered his condolences and an opportunity to return for the 2022 Main Event.

Andrew Flaherty
Andrew Flaherty

Andrew Flaherty was all-in for 8,000 from under the gun and Ryan Gittleson called from the big blind for just 2,000 more.

Andrew Flaherty: {5-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Ryan Gittleson: {q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

Flaherty needed help and the flop of {3-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{10-} didn't help him much, but the {2-Hearts} on the turn gave him straight and flush outs. Unfortunately for him, the river bricked out with the {3-Diamonds} and Flaherty was eliminated one spot away from the money.

Cowen Busts Jaffee Before the Money

Nível 16 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Jared Jaffee
Jared Jaffee

The player from the cutoff raised and Jared Jaffee three-bet jammed his last 106,000 in from the button. Rob Cowen four-bet shoved for more from the big blind for the initial raiser to get out of the way.

Once it was their turn to reveal their hole cards, Cowen flipped them over quickly but Jaffee waited until Jack Effel told him to do so.

Jared Jaffee: {a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}
Rob Cowen: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

The flop came {q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{k-Hearts} to not help Jaffee.

The turn was the {k-Clubs} for Jaffee to add some extra outs as he could counterfeit the two pair of Cowen but the river completed the board with the {7-Clubs} instead to send Jaffee away without a Main Event cash as there are now 1,001 players left in the field.

Song Wins a Long One

Stephen Song
Stephen Song

The action folded to the button who raised it up and Stephen Song three-bet to 55,000 from the small blind. His opponent called and they went heads-up to a flop of {q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. Song led out with a bet of 41,000 and his opponent called to see the {5-Diamonds} on the turn.

Song fired out another bet of 140,000 and his opponent still called. The {q-Clubs} paired the board on the river and Song thought for a couple of minutes before reaching back for a bet of 350,000. That sent his opponent deep into the tank for at least five minutes. He eventually decided to lay his hand down and Song dragged in a massive pot.

As his opponent mumbled to himself for a few seconds, Song finally spoke up. "I probably had it," he chuckled. "I didn't have quads tho."

Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Stephen Chidwick was out of position in a heads-up pot on a board reading {2-Spades}{3-Clubs}{6-Hearts} with around 15,000 in the middle.

Both players checked on the flop and Chidwick led out with a bet of 30,000 on the {4-Spades} turn. His opponent called.

The {5-Clubs} on the river put a straight on the board and Chidwick took a minute before putting out a bet worth 200,000 with only about 75,000 in the pot. His opponent smiled and laughed as if to tell Chidwick "good bet" and let his hand go.

Matusow Calls Prydvor's River Bet

Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

With 65,000 in the pot and {8-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Hearts}{8-Spades} on the board, Mike Matusow checked from early position and Denys Prydvor bet 16,000. Matusow called and the river was {j-Hearts}.

Matusow checked the river and quickly called when Prydvor fired 70,000. Prydvor turned over {k-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for the Broadway straight, while Matusow flashed {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} as he tossed the losing hand into the muck.

"He was trying to bluff it off," Matusow said as he absorbed the disappointing results. "And he would've bluffed the river, too!"

Matusow quickly cooled down.

"Nice hand, Denys."

Lamb Run Out by Foutty

Nível 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Ben Lamb
Ben Lamb

Steve Foutty limped in from under the gun and the action folded to Ben Lamb in the hijack who raised to 28,000. The button and the big blind both made the call and so did Foutty.

The flop came {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{9-Spades}, it was checked to Lamb who continued with a bet of 55,000 to which only the button folded while the big blind and Foutty came along.

The turn was the {2-Hearts}, the big blind checked again but Foutty fired a bet of 100,000 out. Lamb counted out his stack and then pushed the 108,000 he had in front of him over the line. The big blind quickly got out of the way before Foutty flicked in the chip for the call.

Ben Lamb: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Steve Foutty: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Lamb had flopped top pair but Foutty had turned the nut flush to leave Lamb drawing dead.

The river completed the board with the {6-Clubs} as a formality as Lamb made his way out of the tournament area.

Quads Vs. Quads Sends Liu Home Approaching Bubble

Nível 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Chang Liu
Chang Liu

(Hand took place 30 minutes ago and we are reporting as it appears on the PokerGO livestream)

Vito Distefano opened to 11,500 with {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and Omer Gabay flatted with {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, as did William Benson with {a-Spades}{10-Spades}, Ugur Ozgur Secilmis with {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} and Chang Liu with {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}.

The five-player flop came out {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}, giving Liu quads and Secilmis a brutal cooler. Everybody checked the flop and then Secilmis hit the absolute dream card on the turn: {6-Clubs}. Once again, they all checked it and saw the {5-Spades} on the river.

Secilmis then bet out 55,000 and then Liu raised to 225,000. Everyone else folded back to Secilmis, who put his opponent all-in for a total of approximately 390,000. Liu, holding quads, snap-called and then found out the bad news that he was exiting the 2021 WSOP Main Event in one of the most cruel ways imaginable.

Bedir Shows the Bluff

Nível 14 : 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Selahaddin Bedir
Selahaddin Bedir

The flop read {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} with around 80,000 in the middle.

The player in the big blind had bet but Selahaddin Bedir raised it up to 49,000 from the button. His opponent reraised to 102,000 for Bedir to tank for a while. He counted out his stack and then opted to make the call.

The turn was the {5-Spades} and the big blind took some time before deciding to check. Bedir took a few seconds and then shoved with the slightly bigger stack. His opponent dived deep into the tank, glanced at his own stack of around 240,000, and took some more time. In the end, he opted to push his cards towards the muck for the fold.

Bedir flipped over the {k-Clubs}{2-Spades} for the bluff for the whole table to gasp and look bewildered.

"What just happened?" one of the players wondered.
