The Main Event is underway! Day 1a of Event #67: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event Championship wrapped up with Mustapha Kanit moving on to Day 2 as the chip leader. The flagship event of the 2021 World Series of Poker attracted 523 runners to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino for the first of six starting flights.

Kanit leads the 348 survivors after Day 1a after chipping up early and building his stack consistently over the evening. The Italian poker pro will be looking to win his first WSOP gold bracelet after making two final tables so far at the 2021 WSOP.

Several legends made an appearance on Day 1a, and among them continuing on to Day 2 are Poker Hall of Fame members Doyle Brunson, Billy Baxter, and Tom McEvoy.

Brunson made his first appearance in the Main Event since 2013, and he will move on to Day 2 with 151,000 in chips. The 10-time WSOP champion was up to some of his old tricks, making great reads and dragging big pots late in Day 1.

McEvoy, the 1983 Main Event champion, will also return for Day 2 with 96,900 in chips. The four-time champion is playing in his 37th Main Event and he is looking for his third cash of the series after hitting the pay window in the 2021 $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha and $1,500 Seven Card Stud events.

Baxter will return among the leaders after bagging 248,000 chips. The seven-time bracelet winner was a serious contender throughout the day, and he'll have the opportunity to turn one of the bigger stacks into a deep run at the Main Event.

Other players not moving on to Day 2 include Calvin Anderson, Upeshka De Silva, Dylan Weisman, Jerod Smith, and 2021 Player of the Year points leader Jake Schwartz.

Lim Puts Faroni to the Test

Nível 5 : 300/600, 600 ante
Dragana Lim

The action was found on the completed board of {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and 60,000 already in the middle.

Dragana Lim shoved for about 150,000, easily enough to cover her opponent Abraham Faroni.

After a long tank, Faroni sent his cards into the muck.

"Show the bluff," encouraged one of her tablemates.

Lim showed the table {q-Hearts}{j-Spades} for two pair.

"That's the only way I was going to win the pot," said Lim. "Did you have me beat"?

"No," said Faroni.

Lim has now moved past 200,000 in chips as the last level of the night nears its end.

With 4,500 in the pot and {q-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Spades} on the board, Scotter Clark bet 1,500 from early position and an opponent in the cutoff called.

The turn was {6-Diamonds} and both players checked. The river was {4-Diamonds}.

Clark fired 5,000 on the river and his opponent called.

"Set," the pirate-clad Iowa native said as he turned over {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}. "Arrrrr, the pirate lives another day."

His opponent mucked and Clark took down the pot.

With around 26,000 chips in the middle, Avi Cohen checked to Billy Bailey on the {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{6-Spades}{7-Clubs}{9-Clubs} board. Bailey put in a bet of 11,000. Cohen went deep in the tank, trying to decide what to do. Eventually, Cohen folded and Bailey tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts} for king-high.

"I was honestly so close to calling you with pocket fives," Said Cohen.

The Champ is Still Here

Nível 5 : 300/600, 600 ante
Tom McEvoy
Tom McEvoy

Poker Hall of Famer Tom McEvoy posited a theory to table #454 in the Amazon Purple section.

"I think I have played in more Main Events than this entire table combined," the 1983 Main Event champion said.

McEvoy explained that he has played in 37 Main Events. One player polled the table to get an official answer.

One by one the players rattled off their Main Event tally.

10...8...6...1...2...8...2...7

The table seemed to come up with a consensus total of 44 Main Events among the other eight players.

More than McEvoy, but not by much.

Chuaprasert Busts One; Jesse Takes Huge Hit

Nível 4 : 300/500, 500 ante
Rittie Chuaprasert

A player raised in early position to 1,500 and Jay Jesse called in the hijack before Rittie Chuaprasert called in the small blind and the big blind completed.

The dealer fanned a flop of {k-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{4-Hearts} and after being checked to the early position raiser continued for 1,800. Both Jesse and Chuaprasert made the call.

The turn was the {6-Spades} and Chuaprasert checked to the aggressor who continued for 1,000. Jesse made the call before Chuaprasert put in a check-raise to 12,000. The early position raiser jammed for 17,000 and both players called.

On the {9-Diamonds} river, Chuaprasert fired out 10,000 and Jesse quickly folded. Chuaprasert tabled {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for two pair, which busted his opponent when he showed {k-Spades}{10-Spades}.

Clark Trucks It In

Nível 4 : 300/500, 500 ante
Scotter Clark
Scotter Clark

Scotter Clark was all-in for around 12,500 from the small blind, but there was a dispute about his betting action.

Clark had placed calling chips out with his left hand before bringing them back and putting them in a toy truck. After carefully placing the rest of his stack in the toy truck, he rolled it into the middle.

Action folded around to the button, who pointed out that Clark had placed chips out with his left hand to call. The floor manager was beckoned over to adjudicate the matter.

After reviewing the facts, the action was considered a call, and the decision was made that there would be no more bets allowed using toy trucks at the 2021 WSOP.

The flop came {9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Clark immediately shoved and the player on the button snap-folded.
