Justin Sternberg Leads After GIANT Day 1a, Danny Nguyen Bags Big

Nível 21 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Danny Nguyen
Danny Nguyen

A total of 1,289 players came together on Day 1a of Event #6: The GIANT, though only 80 of them were left in action by the close of play. This is the first of five Day 1s of the GIANT, spread across five consecutive Fridays. At the end of the first one it is Justin Sternberg who leads the field, and appears to be the only player next to Danny Nguyen with over one million, although several players pushed him close.

Nguyen won a big pot towards the end of the night against former chip leader Martin Zamani. After Zamani opened, Nguyen defended his big blind. The pair checked a flop of ten-four-deuce and Nguyen check-called a bet of 30,000 on the turn, which was another ten. The river was a three. Nguyen checked again and Zamani bet 120,000. Nguyen moved all in for 430,000 and Zamani called. Nguyen showed ace-five for a wheel, and his opponent mucked.

Other big stacks include Elvis Toomas (995,000), Josh Reichard (935,000), Adam Richardson (895,000) and Vincent Lee (810,000). Both Andrew Kelsall (290,000) and Matt Affleck (210,000) also bagged stacks ahead of Day 2.

Several well-known players were in action early, including a whole host of bracelet winners. David "ODB" Baker, Konstantin Puchkov, Phil Laak and Allyn Shulman all know what it takes to win a WSOP gold bracelet, with Scott Davies winning his in the 2014 WSOP APAC Main Event.

There was a good start of proceedings for Laak, Andrew Kelsall and Matt Affleck who soon shot up to double starting stack after some early skirmishes at their respective tables.

Several players took advantage of the unlimited re-entry policy, including Jamie Kerstetter, Adam Owen and Shulman, and with the 20-minute levels it was imperative to get things going as soon as possible once you entered.

The likes of Dzmitry Urbanovich, Tom Hall, Fernando Brito, Calvin Anderson, Ryan Laplante, Craig Varnell and Kathy Liebert all featured on Day 1a, but bust short of the money.

A total of 194 players were guaranteed a min-cash worth $557. Adam Owen was eliminated just short of the money, after running ace-queen into ace-king, but it was Maxime Heroux who bubbled Day 1a of the GIANT after his kings were cracked by the ace-six of Eric Bunch.

The final few levels were a hectic mix of clashes leading to various changes in the chip lead. However, by the end of the night it was Sternberg who emerged as the overall chip leader for Day 1a, leading the final 80 players.

This year's event features five weekly Friday Day 1s, with the next taking place on 8th June before the Day 1 flights are combined on Saturday 30th June, and play down to a winner on Sunday 1st July. Stay tuned to PokerNews for all the live updates from the rest of the GIANT and the whole of the 2018 World Series of Poker.

Adam Owen moved all in from early position for around 60,000. A player in middle position three-bet all in over the top. The remaining players folded.

Adam Owen: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

There was no help for the Brit on the {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{a-Hearts} run out and he was eliminated shortly before the money bubble in Flight 1a was reached.

Keeney: "I Went All In at the WSOP; It Was the Best"

Nível 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Charlotte Keeney
Charlotte Keeney

"Keep it low, dealer!" shouted Charlotte Keeney who was all in for her tournament life. She held {4-Clubs}{4-Spades} but was up against three other opponents holding {j-Spades}{k-Clubs}, {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, and {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} respectively. Keeney was ahead, for now.

The flop came {j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Spades} giving one of her opponents a straight. The turn was the {7-Clubs} and the river was the {8-Hearts}. Keeney was eliminated midway through Level 11 on Day 1a of the Giant and afterwards she spoke with PokerNews.

"I feel fantastic," said Keeney with the biggest grin imaginable on her face. "Four months ago I was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer, and then a month ago I was diagnosed with cervical cancer, so playing at the World Series of Poker is on my bucket list."

Keeney said that she had lived in Vegas for years, and had always wanted to come and play an event at the WSOP. Now she has.

"I literally flew from Florida for this event. I landed 20 minutes before the tournament started. I played, I made it halfway, and to me, that feels like a success.

"I mean it's the World Series of Poker! It's everything, you know what I mean? It's thrilling."

Other items on Keeney's bucket list include scuba diving in Key West and in October she is travelling to Albuquerque to see the balloon festival.

"I just got back from Russia," said Keeney. "I also went to Alaska and saw the Northern Lights. I just went skinny-dipping for the first time, that was on my bucket list. Some are small and some are big, but the WSOP was like...I'm going to cry now, I can't believe I came. I'm so happy."

Like most low limit tournaments at the WSOP, the atmosphere at the Day 1 tables is convivial.

"It's been so much fun; I had the most fun at my table. Table 6 in the Blue section is the most fun table. There were hugs and everything. I came in a little late at the break, and they were worried about me."

And where was she?

"I was...gambling away all my money, like an idiot!"

Keeney's positive outlook on life is striking, not least because she had just bust the tournament. We asked her what keeps her spirits up.

"Life is short. Honestly, the second I got that diagnosis it was like, you know what? Don't think about how you're going to die, think about how you wanna live. And from then every day has been the best day ever.

"I won five hands and I got to go all in twice, which is thrilling. I went all in at the WSOP. It's the best."

Feagins Busts Owen

Nível 9 : 600/1,000, 200 ante
Adam Owen
Adam Owen

James Feagins opened to 4,000 and Adam Owen three-bet to 10,000 from the big blind. Feagins called and watched as Owen jammed for 15,000 on the {9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop.

Feagins wrestled with his decision before calling. Owen snap-turned over {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and Feagins sighed showing {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}.

The turn was the {2-Hearts}, but the river {a-Diamonds} gave Feagins a pair and sent the Brit to the rail.

The GIANT is Back, and it Promises to Be Bigger Than Ever!

2017 GIANT winner Dieter Dechant
2017 GIANT winner Dieter Dechant

From Jack and the Beanstalk, to James and his Peach. From San Francisco to Andre, they all have something in common, and that is GIANT!

It's back! Last year the GIANT was a new event on the World Series of Poker schedule, but just under a year since inaugural champion Dieter Dechant won $291,906, many more players will be hoping to start their own fairytale run when play gets underway at 7 p.m. local time this evening.

Dechant wasn't the only player who turned the $365 buy-in into a big score, with the top four players all taking home six-figure payouts after a field of 10,015 created a prizepool of just over $3m.

This year's event features five weekly Friday Day 1s (1st June, 8th June, 15th June, 22nd June & 29th June) before the Day 1 flights are combined on Saturday 30th June, and play down to a winner on Sunday 1st July.

Players who enter the GIANT will receive 25,000 in chips. On each Day 1, they will play 21 levels (or down to 10 players, whichever is first). The blinds are 20-minutes long on Day 1, and 40 minutes on Day 2/3. There will be 20-minute breaks every six levels on Day 1.

There are unlimited re-entry, with late registration open for nine levels (~10:20p.m.).

The structure of these Day 1s is slightly different to other tournaments at this year's WSOP. Players will play into the money in each flight. The remaining prize money not awarded then gets carried over to Day 2.

Players may elect to forfeit their stack if they choose and re-enter another flight. However, once a player bags chips at the end of Day 1, they are no longer eligible to participate in additional starting flights.

Players may cash in multiple flights if they reach the top 15% of any flight, but do not bag.
