Kihara Looking for Bracelet #2 After Bagging $2,500 Mixed Big Bet Day 1 Chip Lead

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 250 ante
Naoya Kihara
Naoya Kihara

After ten levels of player, just 51 players remain from a field of 205 that entered the $2,500 Big Bet Mix. This eclipsed the mark of 197 set last year. Leading the counts is former bracelet winner Naoya Kihara with 119,700.

"Last year, the first year this event took place, I made a Day 3 so I couldn't play it," said Kihara, "This year I was playing in cash games at the Bellagio, but I couldn't focus on those games. So I just cleared my mind and jumped in this. And I got lucky!"

Kihara won his bracelet back in 2012 in a $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed event and had to weather his fair share of storms today. At one point he got kings in against the deuces of Jan Suchanek, only for his opponent to make backdoor quads. This put him down to 35,000 but he soared back up to bag a healthy stack.

Also bagging up a big stack is Dario Sammartino with 117,000. Sammartino is coming off the back of a third place in the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship, his only cash of the WSOP so far, but last year he registered four top-10 finishes including a third place in Event #6: $111,111 HIGH ROLLER for ONE DROP.

Other notables still in contention include $50,000 Poker Player's Championship runner-up John Hennigan (111,850), who's having a monster series, last year's final tablist Andrew Kelsall (66,200) as well as Mike Matusow (72,300), Eli Elezra (70,000), David "ODB" Baker (41,075), Barry Greenstein (27,375), and Brian Rast (23,150).

There were multiple bracelet-winners aplenty during the early levels, with Brian Hastings, David Bach, Barry Greenstein, Mike Matusow, John Monnette and Chris Vitch all joining in, creating a stacked field for the relatively modest buy-in of $2,500.

Iraj Parvizi lead this event last year after Day 1, but he would bust early on today, along with Jameson Painter, Mike Gorodinsky, Max Kruse, Robert Mizrachi and Phillip Hui. Players had the option of a single re-entry, and a number of the players eliminated early on took advantage of this.

The payouts were also confirmed today, with over $120,000 for first place.

With the swings of the big bet mix starting to show, the chip lead changed hands throughout the day, with Bruno Fitoussi, Randy Ohel, John Racener and Ryan Riess all having spells atop the counts.

After registration closed, it looked like Jeff Lisandro would bag the chip lead after scooping a huge Big O pot to sit with over 130,000. However, the Australian would slip back down the counts as Kihara and Sammartino battled it out for the end of day chip lead. Eventually, it was the Japanese that would claim the top spot.

Coverage continues on Wednesday, June 20 from 2 p.m. here on PokerNews with the tournament expected to play down to a final table.

Lisandro Wins Huge All-In Pot for the Chip Lead

Big O

The under the gun player had raised to 1,500 and the player in the small blind called. Jeff Lisandro was the big blind and he decided to raise it up to 6,000. Both players called and there was a big pot brewing.

The flop was {5-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and the player in the small blind decided to lead out with a pot-sized bet of 18,600. Lisandro called and the preflop raiser folded his hand.

The {Q-Spades} was the turn and that's where all the chips went to the middle. The player in the small blind pushed all-in for about 25,000 and Lisandro called.

Jeff Lisandro: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Small Blind: {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}

The river was the {K-Hearts} and there was no low on the board possible. Lisandro won the huge pot with just his pair of aces, eliminating his opponent in the meantime. Lisandro is now the chip leader of the tournament with just over 40 minutes left to play on Day 1.

Bicknell Sampling the Big Bet Mix

Nível 8 : 300/600, 150 ante
Kristen Bicknell
Kristen Bicknell

No-Limit 5 Card Draw

Kristen Bicknell has two WSOP gold bracelets, both of which are in No-Limit Hold'em events, but she's jumped in the $2,500 Big Bet Mix for a change. On her first hand, in Pot-Limit Omaha 8 or Better, she folded to a flop continuation bet from Sammartino, and the game immediately changed to 5 Card Draw.

Bicknell asked for an explanation of the game, and it was given to her by tablemate Calvin Anderson.

It folded to Sammartino who opened to 1,400.

"So wait, I can go all in?" asked Bicknell, who then did so. She already separated her five cards into four and one. The action folded back to Sammartino who had a decision.

"Did Krissy just move all in and show her draw?" said railbird Shaun Deeb from the next table. "Wow, live pro reads; Alex Foxen must be at the same table(!)"

Sammartino eventually folded showing {q-}{q-}. Bicknell showed {j-}{j-}

"Wow, she just levelled you Dario," continued Deeb, "She's secretly been playing this game for 23 years with her grandma."

Double Up for Greenstein

Nível 8 : 300/600, 150 ante
Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

Pot-Limit Omaha

We picked up the action on the {4-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{10-Spades} flop and Barry Greenstein put 1,800 in the middle. Ray Henson, the left-hand neighbor of Greenstein called and both saw the {6-Diamonds} turn appear.

Greenstein bet 6,000 this time, with just 5,975 behind. Henson put him all-in and Greenstein quickly called.

Ray Henson: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Barry Greenstein: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}

The river was a complete brick and Greenstein managed to double up to a more than healthy stack.

Vitch Eliminates Leah

Pot-Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw

Mike Leah got fourth place in the Poker Player Championship earlier today and jumped right into the Big Bet Mix tournament. It didn't go as well as in the PPC, since he just busted out in a hand against Chris Vitch.

We're unsure how the drawing went on the first draw, but after they drew all of Leah's chips went in the middle. Vitch barely covered him and his chips were in the middle as well.

They both drew one on the second draw and Leah announced he was going to draw one on the third draw. Vitch stood pat and after the draw he opened up {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. Leah opened up a {10-} and Vitch got awarded with the pot.

Owen Doubles Up Through Foxen

Nível 6 : 200/400, 100 ante
Adam Owen
Adam Owen

No-Limit 5 Card Draw

It folded around to Alex Foxen on the big blind. Foxen put in a bet of 1,200 and Adam Owen pushed all-in for 9,525. Foxen decided on a call and Owen announced he was drawing three. Foxen drew two and they opened up their hands.

Adam Owen: {J-}{J-}{J-}
Alex Foxen: {K-}{K-}

Owen immediately opened up {Q-}{5-} and Foxen needed to catch a king. He revealed the {8-} and {2-} so his only hope was the final card he was dealt, but that was the {4-} to double up Owen.

No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw

Randy Ohel raised to 350 and Fabrice Soulier called in the small blind. Hye Park made it 1,200 from the big blind and got two calls.

Soulier and Park both drew one and Ohel stood pat.

The three players all checked and Soulier announced pair. Park showed a {10-}.

"Keep going," said Ohel.

"Ten-nine," said Park.

"Keep going," repeated Ohel.

"Seven," said Park, and Ohel showed {10-}{9-}{6-}{5-}{2-} and took down the pot.

Bach Gets a Quarter

Nível 1 : 50/75, 25 ante
David Bach
David Bach

Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo

There was already an {8-Spades}{4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Spades} board out there when David Bach and his opponent got all their chips in the middle. Bach showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Spades} for a wheel and a low flush, but his opponent opened up {A-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for a wheel and a better flush.

The {7-Clubs} river was inconsequential and Bach had to give up half of his chips.

Day 1 of Event #40: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet Starts at 3 p.m.

Welcome to Event 40
Welcome to Event 40

Last year there was a lot of fuss about a new event on the tournament schedule — a "big bet mix" tournament, featuring a rotation of "big bet" games. The format is back for its second year on this year's World Series of Poker schedule, with Event #40: $2,500 Mixed Big Bet set to begin at 3 p.m.

Last year the event consisting of Big O, No-Limit Hold’em, No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw, Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better, No-Limit 5-Card Draw High, Pot-Limit Omaha, and Pot-Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw was won by Jens Lakemeier. He beat a field of 197 players to become the first ever WSOP Mixed Big Bet bracelet winner.

Phil Galfond said on Twitter he is not going to play the event because if he manages to final table this one he would have to miss the $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament. Even so, this event should attract a lot of players who enjoy both big bet games and mixed games, so we'll be eager to see who enters.

Players start the tournament with 12,500 in chips and the blinds start at 50/75 or 25/50, depending on the game they are playing first. The tournament will use button antes for Pot-Limit Omaha, Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or better, Big-O, Pot Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw and No-Limit Hold'em. Meanwhile there is a regular ante for No-Limit 5-Card Draw High and No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw. Late registration is open for the first eight levels of the day and will close at approximately 12:00 a.m.
