Danzer Runs Away With Day 1

Nível 5 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Chip Leader George Danzer
Chip Leader George Danzer

The $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Championship drew 134 of the best poker players on the planet to the Rio by the time registration was through today.

That helped create a $1,259,600 prize pool with $352,696 and a coveted World Series of Poker bracelet awaiting the winner.

A total of 16 players will get paid, but that number will not include Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Jason Mercier, Vanessa Selbst, Barry Greenstein, Tom Schneider, or Scott Seiver, who were among the bigger names that busted throughout the first five levels played Tuesday.

By the time they bagged and tagged, just 75 players remained in the hunt and they will all be looking up at WSOP Player of the Year leader George Danzer when play resumes at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Danzer continued his great run at the 2014 WSOP that already includes a win in the $10,000 Razz Championship, a final table appearance in the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw and cashes in the $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo/Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo and the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Six Max Championship by having an amazing day here.

It appeared the German Team PokerStars Pro scooped every hand he played on the way to building a huge 237,800-chip stack giving him a massive chip lead headed into Wednesday's Day 2.

However, there's still a long way to go, there are some rather big names that built competing stacks on the day and they will be looking to end Danzer's run-good as play continues.

This list includes no less than high-stakes online legend Brian Hastings, high-stakes gamblers Richard Sklar and Abe Mosseri, and 2014 WSOP bracelet winners Justin Bonomo and Calvin Anderson.

A host of other recognizable names also dot the chip counts list as well, including John Juanda, Dan Shak, Frank Kassela, Ted Forrest, Jeff Lisandro and more.

The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be back with extensive coverage from start to finish tomorrow as they look to play another five two-hour levels or down to a final table so tune in early and often as we get even closer to crowning a $10,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low Champion.

Action! Action! We Want Action!

Nível 1 : 400/800, 100 ante
Would you take 40-1 from Daniel Negreanu?
Would you take 40-1 from Daniel Negreanu?

Richard Sklar, better known as "Richie Fingers," is always looking for action. In previous events he's made final table bets with Phil Ivey - he collected in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. event where he finished third for $206,499 - and now he's making wagers with Daniel Negreanu.

Daniel NegreanuJust gave Richie "Fingers" Sklar 40-1 to win this tourney. If you see money laying on the street, might as well bend over and pick it up.

Sklar then bet $1,000 on a very well-known player at an adjacent table.

Daniel NegreanuAlso laid same price vs @MikeSexton_WPT hope you both come 2nd and 3rd!

"Two dimes?" Sklar just confirmed, popping out of his chair and handing Negreanu the money.

"I'm good for the money," Negreanu told him, smiling.

Kid Poker then turned his attention to fellow member of the red spade Jason Mercier, and asked him if he wanted to place a bet on himself at 40-1.

"What's the max bet?" Mercier asked. "A hundred thousand?"

"Two thousand," Negreanu answered.

"No thanks, brah," Mercier responded.

"I'll take seventy-four to one," Mike Gorodinksy joked when he was prompted with the proposition.

Gordo tried to bargain the line up from 40, but Negreanu wouldn't budge. We'll update you if anyone else takes Negreanu's offer.

Déjà Scoop

Nível 1 : 400/800, 100 ante
Calvin Anderson
Calvin Anderson

Calvin Anderson: {x-}{x-} / {6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} / {x-}
Chris George: {x-}{x-} / {k-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{9-Clubs} / {x-}

Anderson check-called a bet on fourth street, then check-called another on fifth. Anderson opted to lead out on sixth and seventh, George raised on seventh, and Anderson called, showing {5-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds} for a six-five low.

George turned over {k-}{k-} for trips, and the two chopped the pot.

Anderson of course won the $1,500 buy-in variant of this game a few days ago, and Melissa Burr, a fellow finalist, is at his table. As he was taking in his half of the pot, the player he defeated in heads-up play, Joe Tehan, sat down right next to him.

"What," Burr asked, incredulously. "How can this happen?"

The three players shared a big laugh, and we will see if any or all of them can make a repeat run at a seven-card stud hi-low final table.

Event #38 Set to Begin!

Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

In 2013, the largest buy-in seven-card stud hi-low tournament at the World Series of poker was $5,000. The winner was Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, who earned $266,503 and his fourth gold bracelet.

This variant of seven-card stud is in several cash game rotations, but the buy-in at the WSOP has fluctuated over the years. In 2009 there was a $10,000 buy-in, but it was slashed in half, as mentioned above. Three years before 2009, it was as low as $1,000.

Here's a look at some of the past champions:

The cards will be in the air at 4 p.m. PT, and we look forward to providing you all of the updates straight from the tournament floor!
