Day 2 Concludes; Lord Leads, Boyd Looks For Third Bracelet

Nível 20
Kristan Lord leads final 15
Kristan Lord leads final 15

It was an exciting day of poker here in the Amazon Room at the 2014 World Series of Poker as Event #27: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. moved through its second day of play. By the time of bagging chips, just 15 players remained in contention for the bracelet and the $230,744 first-place prize. Kristan Lord was the player closest to achieving that goal, bagging up the chip lead with 475,000 in chips.

While Lord sat on the biggest returning stack, Stewart Yacik was hot on his heels with 468,000. Rounding out the top three was Brandon Guss with 371,000.

These three players bagged up the most chips for the day, but their paths to glory will still be laden with obstacles as the field houses some familiar names and top players. Most notably, Dutch Boyd bagged up in the middle of the pack with 209,000. Boyd sat atop the chip counts for a good portion of the day and will be a force to be reckoned with as the tournament progresses. A two-time bracelet winner, Boyd has put himself in a solid position to earn his third piece of WSOP jewelry. Boyd's first bracelet came in 2006 when he defeated the field in the $2,500 Short-Handed No-Limit Hold'em event for over $475,000. Four years later, Boyd captured his second in a $2,500 Six-Handed Limit Hold'em event where he pocketed just above $235,000.

Boyd isn't the only bracelet winner returning tomorrow, though. David "ODB" Baker won his first and only WSOP bracelet in 2012 during the $2,500 8-Game event. Baker, who has already proven himself a deadly mixed-game player, could very well be the next gold bracelet winner of the 2014 WSOP. Also returning, but very short on chips, will be 2012 $5,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low bracelet winner Adam Friedman. Friedman bagged up 39,000 in chips, which was just under two big bets, but if he's able to run his stack up early then he will certainly have a chance at winning bracelet number two.

Other notable names to return for Day 3 include 2013 WSOP Asia-PAcific $1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha bracelet winner Jim Collopy (336,000), Chris George (311,00), Tommy Hang (163,000), and Jon Turner (116,000).

While these players all progressed onto the third day of play, other players were not as fortunate. Some players to fall before the money bubble was burst included Matt Glantz, Phil Ivey, Gabriel Nassif, Alex Rocha, Xuan Liu, Greg Raymer, Scott Bohlman, Michael Chow, and Andy Bloch.

The top 80 players were guaranteed a payday of at least $2,577. Some of the players eliminated in the money were Barry Shulman (79th), Richard Ashby (72nd), Toto Leonidas (64th), Roland Israelashvili (59th), James Van Alstyine (51st), John Cernuto (43rd), Jeff Shulman (42nd), Huck Seed (27th), Joe Cassidy (21st), Chris Klodnicki (19th), and Aaron Steury (17th).

Play will resume at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday where the final 15 players will play down to a champion.

Who will be the next gold bracelet winner of the 2014 WSOP? Only time will tell, but one certainty is that PokerNews will be on hand to provide all of the latest updates. Until tomorrow, have a good night and enjoy the first episode from PokerNews' new series Ivey Stories.

Brandon Guss {X-}{X-}/{5-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{A-Spades}/{X-}
Tommy Hang{X-}{X-}/{6-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{J-Spades} - fold

John Monnette was down to his last 11,000 and raised after Chris George opened. Brandon Guss and Tommy Hang had called George's opener and all three would call Monnette's raise. On fourth street Hang would bet and both George and Guss would call. On fifth street, Hang would check and Guss would bet. Hang would fold and George would make the call. On sixth street, Guss bet again and was called by George. On seventh street, George would finally release his hand after Guss made a bet.

Guss turned over his down cards... {6-Spades}{2-Clubs}{X-} for a 65 low. Monnette had a good low of his own with {6-}{3-}{2-} to give him an 87 low but that wasn't good enough and Monnette was eliminated in 16th place.

Aaron Steury Eliminated in 17th Place ($6,178)

Hold 'Em

Aaron Steury was down to less than two big blinds and after posting his big blind would call off the last of his chips when Lonnie Heimowitz opened. "Hope I'm drawing live," said Steury as he turned over {K-Hearts}{5-Spades}. "You are," said Heimowitz as he tabled {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}. Steury would hit the {K-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop to give him a pair of kings and would stay ahead on the {2-Clubs} river. The river was a cruel one for Steury, however, as it was one of three cards in the deck that could knock him out... the {A-Spades}. With Steury's elimination we are now down to 16 players and are re-drawing to the final two tables.

Limongi: {x-}{x-} / {2-Clubs}{9-Spades}{Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} / {x-}

Picking up with the action on fourth street, a short-stacked Shannon Petluck tossed his last 1,000-chip into the middle. Both Mark Gallo and Michele Limongi called to see fifth. The two active players checked fifth street and Gallo was showing four to a low on sixth. He moved all in for exactly one big bet - 16,000. Limongi called, the hands were tabled, and seventh street was dealt.

Petluck: {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Gallo: {6-Spades}{3-Clubs}
Limongi: {10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Gallo instantly rolled over his seventh card - the {2-Diamonds} - for two pair and a low. Limongi then squeezed out the {5-Clubs}, keeping his pair of queens behind for the high and ensuring that Gallo would take that portion. Petluck rolled over the {7-Spades}, gathered his belongings and exited the tournament area. Gallo scooped up the pot and is now up to around 75,000.

We missed the hand but according to Stewart Yancik, Joe Cassidy was knocked out when his pair of tens was unable to improve against Yanick who would end up hitting trip jacks. Winning that pot has moved Yancik to the top of the leader board with 400,000 in chips.

Morrison: {x-}{x-} / {6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{6-Clubs} / {x-}

Picking up with the action on fifth street, Chris George led out with a pair of fives. Brandon Guss cut out a raise and Dennis Morrison made it three bets to go. George and Guss called to see sixth.

On sixth street, Morrison made sixes, allowing him to lead out first. Both George and Guss called and the trio received seventh street. Morrison moved all in in the dark for his last 13,000 and both of his opponents called. Guss rolled over {K-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} for trip nines which was good enough to take the high.

George showed {8-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} for an eighty-five which earned him the low. Morrison showed {K-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts} for sixes and an eighty-seven for the second-best hand in both the high and the low. He was eliminated from play in 22nd place.

Devin Hanneman Eliminated in 23rd Place ($6,178)

Stud

Despite doubling immediately after being crippled by Joe Villella, Devin Hanneman has since been eliminated from play.

Boyd: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} / {2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} / {10-Hearts}
Hanneman: {6-Clubs}{10-Spades} / {10-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{6-Spades} / {x-}

Dutch Boyd was the bring in and Hanneman completed. Adam Friedman called from the next seat over and action folded back around to Boyd. He thought for a moment before raising the action, prompting Hanneman to go all in for his last 16,500 total. Friedman folded and the hands were turned up. Boyd led with his pair of aces and Hanneman looked to catch up with his pair of tens.

Despite making tens up, Hanneman failed to improve against Boyd's trip aces on fifth, ensuring his elimination in 23rd place. He collected $6,178 in prize money while Boyd boosted his stack to 305,000.

Jang Won Lee Eliminated in 24th Place ($6,178)

Nível 19
Jang Won Lee
Jang Won Lee

Omaha 8

Jang Won Lee's demise all began in what David "ODB" Baker would call the dumbest pot in the history of H.O.R.S.E.

David BakerPretty sure I just lost the dumbest pot in the history of horse final 3 tables. Pot was massive I still have 90k

It started with Michele Limongi raising first to act. Baker would make it three bets and Jang Won Lee would make it four bets. Limongi and Baker would both call and we would see a flop of {K-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades}. Lee would bet and get called by both Limongi and Baker. The turn was the {10-Spades} and this time Lee would check. Limongi checked as well and called after Baker bet with Lee folding and leaving himself with just 3,000 behind. The river was the {3-Spades} and both players checked. Limongi turned over {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts} for a rivered spade flush. Baker shook his head and muttered under his breath "he's been doing that all day."

The very next hand Joe Cassidy would raise, Lee would call off his last 3,000 and Limongi would call as well. Lee smiled at the action and said "look at that... yum, yum baby." Before the dealer put out the flop, Limongi said in a thick accent "I check dark." The flop came {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}{2-Spades} and Cassidy said "I guess I bet light." Limongi smiled and said "I call in the shade" as he made the call. The turn was the {4-Clubs} and Cassidy checked and said "I don't like it when your in the shade, it's creepy." Limongi said "I check also" and we were off to the river. Both players checked the {7-Clubs} turned over by the dealer and Lee would survive with bottom two pair with {4-}{2-}{X-}{X-} for the high end while Limongi would take the remainder of the pot with {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}.

The next hand saw five players seeing the flop including Lee and Limongi. Shannon Petluck would make bets on the flop and turn on the {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}{6-Diamonds} board and find one caller in Limongi. The river was the {10-Spades} and Limongi said "I bet" and after a few moments told Lee "you can go home." That was enough to get Petluck to fold and Limongi turned over {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Spades} for the nut spade flush and with that Lee was eliminated in 24th place.
